    Interview: Sep 24th, 2013

    Chris King (Miyabi)

What are some characteristics of and how many other wordhoppers are there that we have seen excluding Hoid, Demoux, and Galladon.

    Brandon Sanderson

You gave me really good wiggle room on that one. Obviously the other person with Galladon and Demoux.

    Chris King (Miyabi)

Right, the one from a future book.

    Brandon Sanderson

His characteristics are… What is he like? Some people have read his book so they know what he's like…

    Chris King (Miyabi)

    Which book is he from?

    Brandon Sanderson

    He's from White Sand.

    Chris King (Miyabi)

Okay, that's one I have but have not gotten to.

    Brandon Sanderson

It's only mediocre so don't worry about it. Let's see what other worldhoppers I want to give you clues about… There’s a Terriswoman running around, if you keep your eyes open.

    Chris King (Miyabi)

I have to read it, everything.

    Brandon Sanderson

Who else do I want to talk about… Words of Radiance has a couple good ones, that will be pretty obvious.

    Footnote

The Terriswoman worldhopper was later revealed to be in Warbreaker though her identity is still unknown.

    Interview: Dec 6th, 2014

    Question (Paraphrased)

    Is Mraize a worldhopper?

    Brandon Sanderson (Paraphrased)

Yes, he's been to a few planets, highly supervised by his babsk.

    Question (Paraphrased)

So what planet is she [Iyatil] from?

    Brandon Sanderson

Well, that's kind of a hard thing to say. She has three planets she's "from". For example, she's living now on Roshar, but then she's from a different planet, but that's not the planet that her people are from.

    Question (Paraphrased)

So there was a mass exodus to that planet?

    Brandon Sanderson

Not exactly. If you were to find a Japanese American, where would they say that they are from? Her people did not have a mass exodus.

    Question (Paraphrased)

Have we seen mass exoduses before?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, there are some in the cosmere. There's a mass exodus that is mentioned in one of the interludes in The Way of Kings.

    Interview: Dec 6th, 2014

    Newan

    Is the kandra worldhopper MeLaan?

    Brandon Sanderson (Paraphrased)

Good question. *gives Newan a RAFO card* In upcoming Mistborn books, you are going to get to know a lot more of the kandra, so you will have a lot more options.

    Newan

Ooh. When the kandra worldhopper is off-world, er off-Scadrial, does she take the form of a human female?

    Brandon Sanderson (Paraphrased)

    Not all of the time.

    Newan

Has she spoken a word of dialogue in a non-Mistborn book?

    Brandon Sanderson (Paraphrased)

    I can't remember.

    Interview: Mar 8th, 2014

    AhoyMatey

I picked up the Easter Eggs for Mraize being a Worldhopper. It was actually the sand that did it, having been fortunate enough to read White Sand.

    Brandon Sanderson

Now there's something odd about that sand. What color is the sand in WoR?

    Interview: Mar 20th, 2014

    Outis

Do we have another worldhopper potentially, with the epilogue?

    Brandon Sanderson

There is some interesting things happening there. Good question!

    Interview: Jan 19th, 2015

    Jason

Can one give the Command, “divide and do thing X”, for Awakening? How many Breaths would it take to do something like a straw mannequin, how small could you get the pieces, how would you retrieve the Breath?

    Brandon Sanderson

Uhm, Jason, I’m afraid I would have to pull out my notes. I mean I wrote that book a few- 2006, and so we’re nine years away from me writing that magic system. I, I have it all in the notes, but I can’t off the top of my head rattle it off for you. People use Awakening so infrequently now in the cosmere, it’s just on the one planet with the occasional worldhopper, that I just go to my notes and get it out when I need it.

    Interview: Oct 12th, 2015

    Question

Kandra can eat nonhumans. What happens when they eat a spren?

    Brandon Sanderson

Kandras have never encountered spren in any relevant way, except for the occasional Worldhopper, and they have never had occasion to try to eat a spren. Good question.

    Interview: Oct 12th, 2015

    Question

In your mind, what would constitute a Worldhopper? Is it someone who makes a single trip between worlds (for example, the exodus from Yolen—not that it was an exodus, but a single trip), multiple trips between worlds (such as Hoid), or simply leaving a particular world?

    Brandon Sanderson

Here's the thing. I would call anyone who is aware that there are multiple worlds in the Cosmere and has visited more than one a Worldhopper.

    Question

Do they actually have to have made it to a second world?

    Brandon Sanderson

I think that…You’re getting at people like- I would say that they are a Worldhopper kind-of, but not fully. They’re kind of...

    Kurkistan

    The Doctor's companion?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah, the Doctor’s companion type thing. I would define a Worldhopper as someone who has been to another world. I would call someone who has not actually been to another world “Cosmere-aware,” but not necessarily a Worldhopper.

    Question

I was thinking more along the lines of the Shard who does not have a planet.

    Brandon Sanderson

    Oh, Shards transcend these definitions.

    Argent

They're kind of Worldhoppers by default.

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes.

    Interview: Oct 6th, 2015

    the fulgid

It seems to be more and more apparent that different abilities are granted depending on the design of one's spiritweb. Is the design of a spiritweb, and the abilities it grants, limited to a specific shardworld, or are the designs universal across the cosmere? For example: can a worldhopper from Roshar travel to Scadrial and access previously locked portions of their spiritweb through methods such as hemalurgy?

    Brandon Sanderson

Most abilities are free to be used across the cosmere, but some are VERY region-locked, like with Elantris. They have difficulty using their abilities outside their own country. There is a reason for this. But most are able to be used elsewhere.

    Interview: Apr 23rd, 2016

    Question

So is Vasher - [lady?] who was part of the process creating Nightblood a worldhopper, then?

    Brandon Sanderson

Vasher had been to Roshar before he created Nightblood, yeah.

    Interview: Nov 22nd, 2016

    BYU Bookstore (Paraphrased)

    Question

In the signing line, I asked him what would have been included in a hypothetical Nalthian essay had there been one.

    Brandon Sanderson

He said it would have talked about how close the scholars there were to being Cosmere aware, and how they knew more than anyone who wasn't a worldhopper. He also said he would have given clues to where the pool was. Also, he wrote "Are you listening?" In my book, although I have no idea what was meant by that.

    Interview: Dec 3rd, 2016

    yulerule

If an allomancer worldhopper really wanted to hack the magic system and knew what they were doing, could they get their hands on some Tanavast-ium or Rayse-ium or Egdli-um? Basically make god metals from the other shards?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes.
