    Interview: Sep, 2012

    Millennium

Do Honorblades have the same sort of relationship to Honor (possibly to a much greater degree) that Shardblades do?

    Brandon Sanderson

    You're on the right track.

    Interview: Mar 11th, 2014

    Question

Why were all the shardblades swords when they can take on any weapon form they want? Would they all revert to swords when they die?

    Brandon Sanderson

When they die they'd revert to the basic form which was a sword since they were patterned after honorblades.

    Interview: Aug 13th, 2014

    Question

The "God Surges" you mentioned recently, are they a part of the Way of Kings frontsheet?

You've said that there are three types of Blades in the Stormlight Archive. We've seen "dead" Shardblades, Honorblades—is the third type the "living spren" Shardblades, or is there another type we haven't seen?

Do all Surgebinders breathe Stormlight in, or are there other ways? Is Lift one-of-a-kind in this regard?

    Brandon Sanderson

All I said regarding this was to tell a fan that it was possible to make an analogy between the god metals on Scadrial and certain powers on Roshar. However, these are not a codified part of the magic system.

Lift is one of a kind.

Nightblood is a very unique kind of Shardblade, but IS a Shardblade.

    Interview: Mar 4th, 2014

    QUESTION

Can someone bond more than one Honorblade?

    BRANDON SANDERSON

Honorblade? You can't bond an Honorblade, though it can be given to you. Shardblades, however, come from a spren bond and it is possible to bond more than one.

    Footnote

Later clarified, Brandon misunderstood the question. One may be bound to multiple Honorblades.

    Interview: Mar 19th, 2014

    Question ()

You mentioned that human can’t bond Honorblades, but Nalan tells Szeth that his bond with his Honorblade has been broken. Can you clear this up?

    Brandon Sanderson

Humans CAN bond Honorblades. There's a crucial difference between Honorblades and Shardblades. When you drop an Honorblade, it does not disappear, even if it has been bonded. A Shardblade will disappear when dropped.

    Interview: Mar 21st, 2014

    Leiyan

I'm guessing it's a RAFO, but why do Honorblades work the way they do?

    Brandon Sanderson

Honorblades were crafted before Shardblades existed--

    Leiyan

    So they were crafted.

    Brandon Sanderson

They were crafted before Shardblades existed, and all Shardblades that exist came about as certain individuals trying to find out how to copy Honorblades.

    Leiyan

So would it be fair to say that Honorblades are analagous to fabrials in some sense? Trap spren in a crystal yada yada Stormlight power?

    Brandon Sanderson

There is an analogy there, that I think would pass the SAT's rigor for analogies.

    Interview: Apr 16th, 2014

    Question

Why was the base form of Shardblades chosen to be blades, as swords?

    Brandon Sanderson

It's because the Shardblades were devised-- I can't spoil the second book-- They were devised as imitations of the Honorblades, which were created and given to the Heralds. So since the original pattern was the Honorblades, they were built to feel like the Honorblades.

    Interview: Feb 20th, 2015

    Question

I know at the end of Words of Radiance Syl shows she can turn into different forms, not just a sword. Why do they not-- Or why do none of the other past Radiants really show that they have done that. Because normally in the flashbacks they are shown just being swords.

    Brandon Sanderson

So the shardblades came from spren seeing the Honorblades, which were created for mankind, and being like “I can do that”. That is what they were imitating.

    Question

    So that’s what they wanted--

    Brandon Sanderson

No, that’s how they see themselves and how they are seen. They can change into other things--

    Question

    They just never--

    Brandon Sanderson

But when you let go of one it’s going to become a sword again.

    Question

Oh, I just meant in all the visions they were always portrayed as swords. Was that just for--

    Brandon Sanderson

That’s cultural, like this is-- One thing that is interesting is you are going to see that the new Radiants don’t have-- I mean the Radiants you have seen almost all of them are after thousands of years of Radiants and Orders and you have certain things that you do. So the writing reason was I didn’t want to give away--

    Question

That’s what I was going to ask.

    Brandon Sanderson

There is a writing reason behind it. I didn’t want to do that and give too much away. I already worried that having Syl shift shapes as often as she did through the first book was going to be a big clue to people and I wanted to hold off on giving away too much.

    Interview: Dec 3rd, 2016

    yulerule

So somewhere it says that the number of Breaths doesn't determine the power of the object. But are the number of Breaths directly tied to how much Investiture is in an object? You're repeatedly said that Nightblood is ridiculously heavily invested, more so than Shardblades, Honorblades, or the Bands of Mourning. But it only has a thousand Breaths, which doesn't seem all that much from the point of view of the GodKing - Tenth Heightening, over 50,000.

    Brandon Sanderson

    RAFO.
