    Interview: Oct 25th, 2008

    Brandon Sanderson

Mistborn Two: New Annotation Chapter Forty Eight

Warbreaker: Copyedit is done and turned in. I actually got this done earlier in the week, but was bouncing around too much doing other things to get the percentage bar updated.

Mistborn Three: Finding the book is still spotty, since the bestseller list spiked another round of sales. Right now, my agent says that Borders stores are slightly more likely to have copies than B&N. However, the best place to find copies are places that I've visited recently on my tour. I think Sam Weller's may even have a few numbered copies left, though those may be gone by now. (Call them first, I'd suggest, to see if there are any still there.)

Note that I'll be signing in San Diego this evening, and Mysterious Galaxy is well known for its willingness to get books to people. (They have a webstore which sells signed first editions across the world.) I'll bet if you call them today before 2pm Pacific, they'd be willing to get you a copy personalized and then ship it to you. Heck, if you call between 2 and 4, I'll bet that Dave and I are there signing still and you can tell me personally what you want me to write in your book.

    Interview: Nov 8th, 2011

    KChan

These are things that I overheard.

    Brandon Sanderson

    Kelsier was not spiked.

Part of the Lord Ruler's motivation for setting up The Final Empire was revenge against the people he viewed as encroaching on his people's land. He was also obsessed with creating order, which Ruin later exploited.

The Ars Arcanum in the books were all written by one person.

The author of the Ars Arcanum is either Hoid or a member of the Seventeenth Shard. Brandon also pointed to an annotation on the map of Elendel that's relevant to this question.

There's just the one system in Warbreaker, and it's also a world with only one Shard on it.

    Interview: Oct, 2008

    Kaimipono (15 October 2008)

What was Zane's hemalurgical power? (Or was he just spiked for control?)

    Brandon Sanderson (16 October 2008)

Extra power with Pushing on metals. It lent him extremely great precision.

    Interview: Oct, 2008

    Kaimipono (16 October 2008)

Did Zane get spiked intentionally? Did someone else (Straff?) know about hemalurgy?

    Brandon Sanderson (17 October 2008)

Zane spiked himself. It was...a very twisted and messy process. Note that Ruin tries to get Spook to do something similar. It's much easier for him to work with someone to get them to spike themselves than it is to arrange the exact circumstances where someone gets spiked.

    Interview: Feb 12th, 2013

    Moose

Has Hemalurgy been used on another planet besides Scadrial?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes it has. Brandon did not want to give out any more details about who was getting spiked or if the spiking was successful.

    Interview: Aug 13th, 2014

    Kurkistan (Goodreads)

Could Miles heal back his Allomancy if it was spiked out of him?

    Brandon Sanderson

No, he could not. He would no longer be an Allomancer. Also, he'd probably be dead. :)

    Kurkistan

I'd thought maybe he could just do some super-tapping from his existing Health in his goldminds (since he'd still have his Feruchemy)...

    Brandon Sanderson

Oh, I see what you're asking. Using Feruchemy to heal the removed portion of soul. That's actually plausible, not so different from healing other kinds of soul-wounds. If he survived, then yes, this actually might work. (That's why I get for reading the questions so quickly.)

    Interview: Mar 12th, 2015

    trevorade (Reddit)

It has been explained that all things exists between three realms: Physical, Spiritual, and Cognitive.

I have surmised that different things "exist more" in a certain realm than another though all things have some presence in the three. Humans appear to "exist more" in the Physical realm. Spren appear to "exist more" in the Cognitive realm (Shadesmar in SA). Investiture appears to have various forms in the Physical Realm (e.g., alomantic metals, mist, stormlight).

Question 1: Does investiture have a consistent form (regardless of magic system and its Physical form) in one of the other realms?

Question 2: Vasher has shown us that he can substitue his need for Breath with another investiture (presumably Stormlight). To what extent is investiture interchangeable between magic systems?

Question 3: Is investiture finite? Hemalurgy and a Return's need to consume breath seems to show us that it can be destroyed. If it is finite, is the Cosmere's magic source doomed to the law of entropy?

    Brandon Sanderson (Reddit)

    1. It's consistent in the Spiritual Realm. Location isn't particularly important there.
    2. Very interchangeable, but not always simple to apply.
    3. Investiture can not be created or destroyed. It follows it's own version of the laws of Thermodynamics.

    Joe_____ (Reddit)

So what happens to the investiture that is lost when a person is spiked and the spike isn't set in the new person immediately? Does it return to the big pool of investiture in the sky like the power from wheel of time where if its not actively being used it returns to the source?

    Brandon Sanderson (Reddit)

What happens to someone's body when it's not being used by a particular person? The system is built to work like that.

    Interview: Oct 12th, 2015

    Kurkistan

If you spiked out Miles' Feruchemical gold, would he be able to burn his Allomantic reserves [read: Feruchemical reserves using Allomancy] and heal it back?

    Brandon Sanderson

Uhn... Okay. If you spiked out his ability to heal gold and somehow left him alive.

    Kurkistan

    Yeah, but still having Allomancy.

    Brandon Sanderson

    Still has allomancy.

    Kurkistan

And he’s like in the middle of burning a goldmind.

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, that would still work. It'd still have a Spiritual connection to him.

    Kurkistan

So if you're a Coinshot and you get [spiked] to have Feruchemical steel, and then you lose the spike after making a store, you can still Compound that for speed?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes... Yeah, that should still work.

    Kurkistan

    Was Paalm doing that?

    Brandon Sanderson

    That's a RAFO.

    Interview: Oct 9th, 2015

    Question

Zane: when and how did he get spiked?

    Brandon Sanderson

Excellent question, that someday I will answer, but not right now. RAFO!

    Interview: Oct 6th, 2015

    Lightning

My question to Brandon was why the Lord Ruler spiked himself. I didn't clarify initially that I meant with hemalurgic spikes.

    Brandon Sanderson

Once I did, Brandon said he thought they were not hemalurgic but only metalminds, and Peter backed him up on that.

    Interview: Feb 22nd, 2016

    Kurkistan

How exactly does hemalurgic decay work for Feruchemy? Is it like a leaky tube or something, or…?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah… yeah. (Here misunderstanding and thinking that the question’s about the power of the Feruchemy itself, not storing/tapping metalminds)

    Kurkistan

So they try to store 10 units of health and only 9 gets through, or…?

    Brandon Sanderson

Hemalurgic decay meaning someone who has been spiked is less powerful? That Hemalurgic decay] or the Hemalurgic decay when a Hemalurgic spike is left outside of blood?

    Kurkistan

Less powerful. So like the Inquisitors are less powerful Feruchemists so they had to spend longer storing: so _why_ did they have to spend longer storing?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah they lose a little bit, it’s a leaky… You’re there, exactly. It just doesn’t quite… it’s not as efficient: it’s [an] efficiency thing.

    Interview: Jun 28th, 2016

    Question

Which eye does the Sovereign have spiked? And what does the spike give?

    Brandon Sanderson

The opposite eye that Marsh has spiked. And nothing special. More to come in Secret History 2 and 3.

    Interview: Sep 6th, 2016

    Question

(I mentioned I had a question about Paalm) So in Shadows of Self, when TenSoon and Was are fighting the spiked creature things, TenSoon mention that he was Harmony's "Preservation."

    Brandon Sanderson

(Brandon seemed a bit apprehensive about that statement.)

    Question

And he said that Wax was Harmony's "Ruin."

    Brandon Sanderson

    (Still aprehensive) Yes...

    Question

Well since Harmony has been around for about 300 years someone else would have had to fill that role, right?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Probably...

    Question

And could that person possibly have been Paalm?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Maybe...

    Interview: Nov 30th, 2016

    Borderlands SF-AU Tour (Paraphrased)

    Question

What about Hemalurgy in other worlds other than Mistborn?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes. (I again asked with the exception of Kandra, have seen Hemalurgy such as people who may have been spiked. He repeated "You have seen Hemalurgy in other worlds." (In other words he is tight-lipped about Kandra part - neither yes or no)

    Interview: Dec 6th, 2016

    Question

The hemalurgic constructs in Shadows of Self, are they as twisted as they are because something was spiked into them, or because something was spiked out?

    Brandon Sanderson

Something spiked in. RAFO on the spiked out part, but nobody knows how to spike something out of someone without killing them, so most likely just spiked in.

    Interview: Dec 6th, 2016

    Question

When someone is Spiked, and dies, does that affect the time they spend in the Cognitive?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, because if you’re extra Invested, which Spiking technically does, if you have a Spike stapling a bit of someone else’s soul to yours--

    Question

The other way. Someone Spikes into you--

    Brandon Sanderson

Ohhhhh, oh okay, no, that might make you go faster.

    Question

Is that why Harmony doesn’t know who’s Spiking people?

    Brandon Sanderson

Hmm. Yeah. I had not considered that. But yeah, sure. Suuureee. You added to the canon. I mean, the actual answer was, when you’re Spiking somebody, you’re ripping of the soul, so kind of, there’s not enough left to talk. I mean, you’re ripping off the soul, so it’s a bad thing. A really bad thing. So you go ‘who killed you’ and it’s just somebody who… But yes, they would go faster too.

    Interview: Dec 6th, 2016

    Question

If you Stamp yourself, so you have an overridden Spirit Web, and then you get Spiked… [laughter] What would happen?

    Brandon Sanderson

We’ve actually worked this one out, so. [laughter]

    Question

Well, you’d die, or very close to it, but would the Stamp revert?

    Brandon Sanderson

So what’s probably going to happen here is that you’re going to rip off the Investiture you’ve put on your soul, and your own soul will have less damage. Now, the Spike is only gonna get the-- the Spike, you’re like ‘what will it do?’ It will do what you’ve been overwritten with, but remember, becoming an Allomancer requires so much energy, and things like--Ehh, it is theoretically possible in the Cosmere to rewrite yourself ‘you’re an allomancer’, someone Spikes you to get this. The Investiture doesn’t care that it was fake on you, you have managed to get that Investiture to work. Uhh, this is really tough. And really, like, you need Connection, and Investiture, but yes it rips off, and you have made a Spike that makes you an Allomancer, even though the person was a forger. But this is the kind of stuff that is like the thought experiments for physicists in the Cosmere as opposed to, yenno.
