    Interview: Feb 16th, 2013

    Viper

Aons look like Arelon; soulstamps look like MaiPon. Aons get weaker when you get further from Arelon, right? That's not just cause Elantris acts like a focus?

    Brandon Sanderson

That's right, it's based on distance. That's why there are no stamped objects in Elantris.

    Viper

So do soulstamps get weaker further from MaiPon? If you left Sel via Shadesmar and went to another planet, would the soulstamp stop working?

    Brandon Sanderson

    That's correct.

    Viper

Could soulstamps be carved that used Arelon as a base form instead of MaiPon?

    Brandon Sanderson

    That's very interesting, isn't it?

    Interview: Sep, 2012

    Kuri Shardweaver

I've heard tell of an upcoming book where the magic is based on forging. This excites me greatly, and I was wondering if you could give us just a smidge more information regarding it? Either the world, the magic itself, or how it impacts said world? Though something like the Shard behind it would be awesome too..

    Brandon Sanderson

Sure, the story is The Emperor's Soul, and it actually takes place on Sel. (Same planet of Elantris.) The magic system works by using a carefully designed stamp to rewrite the past of an object--creating a 'forgery' of its past, and that changes what it is in the future. Rewrite the past of a beat-up chair so it was owned by someone who cared for it, and suddenly it's polished and maintained. It's not illusion; it's an actual transformation.

It works on the same mechanics of AonDor and its kin, using written characters to access the Dor and channel its power.

    Interview: Oct 30th, 2012

    Lance Alvein

Is Sel realmatically knowledgeable by this point, or is it specific to forgery?

    BRANDON SANDERSON (paraphrased)

Sel is the most realmatically knowledgeable of any of the shardworlds, but much of the knowledge demonstrated in the book is directly related to forgery - it's tied to the theological aspects of forgery more than anything else.

    Interview: Nov 6th, 2012

    Question

My question is kind of twofold. So the Emperor's Soul takes place on Sel. Is it's magic derived from the Dor?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes.

    Question

Okay, and second, Mistborn, the broadsheet hints that there's a continent or whatever on the other side of the Mistborn planet.

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes.

    Question

Would that also be connected to Allomancy and Feruchemy and all that?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes, it will be.

So, I gave you a lot of answers. [laughter] To expand upon that, the magic systems for Elantris- the pitch to myself designing the world and magic system was this kind of procedural-based, almost programing-based magic. Where in Elantris, you use these characters to programout a sequence of events that tells the power flowing through what to do.

What Shai is doing in this book is she carves a little seal. And the seal is very much like a little program, and she stamps it on something and uses that stamp to rewrite the history of the object. As long as the seal is there, the object thinks it has this other history. The example you see in the book is you know- an old dirty table that's not been cared for, she can write a seal for its history, she has to figure out what its history was first. And she can write out a seal that basically reprograms that past, so when she stamps it, it thinks it's been cared for all along and suddenly it gains this lacquer, it's beautiful, it's been well-cared for, because in that fake Forgery of the history, that's what happened to it. And that's what her magic does, which is why she's been hired to Forge a copy of the emperor's soul.

    [Ooooh]

    Yeah, I know I'm evil.

    Interview: Apr 15th, 2013

    Reddit AMA 2013 (Verbatim)

    Kurkistan ()

Are the changing beauty standards of Returned and the "plausibility" of Forgeries determined by the same kind of "cognitive ideals or concepts which have taken on literal personification over time" that some types of Spren represent?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes. These things all work according to the same fundamental framework.

    Interview: 2013

    Soronir (February 2013)

I love how many authors we get on this subreddit, it's amazing. Not sure if you meant this forum or not but it's still cool. I hope I see Brandon Sanderson one of these days, I have a stupid question for him.

    Brandon Sanderson

    Shoot.

I've been terrible about my reddit pms lately. Better to ask here.

    Soronir

About Miles from Alloy of Law and his regenerative powers. If he was bisected down the middle and the halves were separated immediately before the healing process could begin, would the two halves each regrow into a whole Miles?

    Brandon Sanderson

Good question. In all of the Cosmere's Shard-based magics, the greater portion of a bisected body regrows the lesser portion. If it were done EXACTLY halfway, the soul wold jump to one or the other randomly and that would regrow.

Amusingly, this first came up in 1999, six years before I got published. (I see someone else already mentioned the situation where I had to consider it.)

    Halo6819

As little add—on Sanderson has stated that at its core, Shard-based healing is about restoring the person back to themselves. So someone who wears glasses and gets shot and healed, will still need glasses as that is how they (or their soul) sees themself. I assume this would happen in more extreme cases too, some one who had a limb amputated at birth gets healed at another time, the limb will not be restored because they see themself as an amputee, even if it is within the magic's ability to restore limbs to some one who recently lost one.

    Phantine

So... wait a sec, the Lord Ruler got decapitated at one point...

What did he do with the severed head? Mount it on the wall?

    Brandon Sanderson

    :)

    Phantine

    He mounted it SIDEWAYS? :P

    Phantine

Actually, this is kind of a sillier followup to a silly question, but could you use Forgery to say 'actually, this half had 51% instead of 49%' and temporarily clone Miles?

    Brandon Sanderson

Boy. That's a can of worms, right there...

    Interview: Dec 6th, 2012

    Question

So, are you planning on doing anything else with Elantris or Warbreaker universes?

    Brandon Sanderson

I am. I don’t know if you read Emperor’s Soul but it’s in the Elantris universe. It’s set on a different continent, so you have to keep your eyes open to see the connections but the magic systems are working on the same fundamental formula. You will enjoy that one if you liked Elantris and Warbreaker I will get back to eventually.

    Interview: Sep 24th, 2013

    Chris King (Miyabi)

Now we are going to move more to some questions on Sel: Would it be easy for a Forger who'd once almost lost her arm (freak guillotine accident) to make a stamp to lose it temporarily, or would it require some more involved Forging than "my arm actually got cut off that one time"?

    Brandon Sanderson

No, and— The more plausible something is the easier the Forging is definitely.

    Footnote

The tone of this answer was a "No, it would be easy for her to do it", the phrasing is ambiguous without the audio

    Interview: Sep 24th, 2013

    Chris King (Miyabi)

Is Resealing a subset of Forging, or a separate system like Bloodsealing is?

    Brandon Sanderson

Um… I'm trying to remember what I decided—I was building all of this on a fourteen hour plane flight keep in mind—I believe it is… Let's go ahead and PAFO that one. I need to go to my notes. I can give you a tentative "I believe it is the same system and not a cousin system" but at the end of the day I kind of had to go to my notes and work things out. There was lots of wiggle room built into the Elantris magic system but I have to know what I decided.

    Interview: Sep 24th, 2013

    Chris King (Miyabi)

And the last one we have here is: Is it possible to use a soulstamp to give shardplate life or at least achieve a robotic status?

    Brandon Sanderson

Wow, it is really, really hard to invest things that have already been invested. Let's just say that, it is really hard to do that. Part of the reason why it is difficult for instance to Push or Pull on something that is inside of somebody because the investiture is interfering and you would have that similar problem doing anything to shardplate with any of the magics.

    Question

The magic in The Emperor's Soul, is that the only magic you've written that there is a Spiritual part to it in your magic trio?

    Brandon

Umm... All of them have some little dabbling in it, it is the most related to the Spiritual Realm-- Of the ones I have shown, certainly it is the most related.

    Interview: Dec 6th, 2014

    Question

Could Shai soul Forge herself into becoming an Elantrian?

    Brandon Sanderson (Paraphrased)

That would be really hard. First of all, she'd have to change where she's born, then soul Forge the fact that she became an Elantrian. Even then, she'd probably look like an Elantrian, but not have any powers. There would probably need to be some kind of bridge, or she would need some kind of super push from AonDor to make it work.

    Lady Radagu

What exactly was Shai's Soulforging of Ashravan comparing itself to to see how well it sticks? His Spiritual aspect? His Cognitive aspect?

    Interview: Jan 5th, 2015

    Lady Radagu

If Shai were to gain a Shardblade, then she gave it up, could she create an Essence Mark that represented the history where she still had the Blade? If she then applied the Essence Mark could she summon the Shardblade or a copy of it?

    Brandon Sanderson

So doing that sort of thing, like rewriting herself even to be an Allomancer, or something like this.... This is possible, but, in order to gain the Investiture she wants to have, she will have to input that much in Investiture, which her current magic system is not capable of doing. Okay? Alright, so, a rewrite so that I have a Shardblade would require some sort of hacking of her magic system, which is currently impossible to her in her current situation.

    Lady Radagu

So, if she had had a Shardblade and gave it up, she could not rewrite herself to have that back without more input?

    Brandon Sanderson

Um, she could... Yes, exactly. Now rewriting-- yes, that would be a lot easier than just rewriting herself so that she had a Shardblade.

    Lady Radagu

    That's what I was asking.

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah, but what you're asking about would be much easier and that probably is within her power, but what that would do is-- Yeah, that's totally within her power. It would create some weird implications where she's summoning it, and someone else summons it back from her, cause the Shardblade thinks it's held by two people.

    Lady Radagu

So it wouldn't be a copy, it would be the same Blade.

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes. Mmhmm.

    nalesean

Suppose you had a Feruchemist that was also skilled in forgery. If they soul stamped themselves, would they normally be able to still use Feruchemy, and if they were able to use Feruchemy after a soul stamp would they be able to access their own metalminds.

    Brandon Sanderson

[Paraphrased]You could do so, but it would require jury rigging in order to make it work, since the soul stamp overwrites the current spiritual aspect of a person. He then said that the accessing the metalminds would also require some amount of jury rigging.

Yes… Does Shai know them-- Or any of them?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Um… Hehehehehe…

    Interview: Oct 12th, 2015

    Question

For Soulforging, if you rewrite the history of an item, and it took effect permanently, would there ever be a potential to have a butterfly effect, out beyond the history of the item, that might directly affect something somewhere else in the world?

    Brandon Sanderson

It would be very very hard for that to ever happen, because it's like spliced DNA or something like that. It's not real. It's a Forgery. Nothing else considers it, that it did that. [That sentence is slightly unclear. Don't quote it.]. The only tricky bit would be if you have children, and you've rewritten yourself in an interesting way that’s actually changed your DNA, that... might have ramifications.

    Interview: Oct 12th, 2015

    Question

If an Allomancer ate a Forged metal, what happens?

    Brandon Sanderson

There is going to be some Investiture in that Forged metal, but it's not going to be keyed the right way, so it'd be like eating a metalmind... If you're asking if the metal was Forged into a different type of metal, the Forgery will take and it will believe and... that's going to get really weird. I have not considered that. That's a “let me think about it.” [Pause] My instincts say that it's going to work like the metal it's become long enough to burn for a few minutes, and then that's going to break the Forgery, and it's going to snap out of it and become the other metal. That’s my instinct, but I’ll have to think about it further. (on second thoughts) It's going to be really hard to burn a metal that's Invested like that. The magics don't mix real well.

    Kurkistan

    Eh, you can burn metalminds.

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah, you can, but it’s from the same “magic set”, right? So...

    Interview: Oct 12th, 2015

    Question

Could you Forge an entire human? What if a kandra eats that human?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, you could Forge an entire human, and the kandra can eat that human as long as the Forgery takes. The problem is, once you break the seal, they're going to change back. So that kandra would have to find a way to eat that person without breaking the Forgery. In that case it would just remain.

    Interview: Oct 12th, 2015

    Argent

On Nalthis, can aluminum prevent somebody from Returning? So if you kill somebody with aluminum and leave the weapon in them?

    Brandon Sanderson

    [Long pause]I don't think that's going to be enough. I think that…

    Question

    Different way then?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah there are totally ways. I don’t think that that’s going to be enough. There's a difference between being inert and blocking Investiture, and actually sucking out Investiture. If you stuck Nightblood inside of a corpse; there are certain things… if you had a larkin or whatever sitting there that ingests the Investiture as it was coming in, that would prevent [Returning]. I think with aluminum you would just have somebody that comes alive with a wound, so maybe... But I think it would just heal around [the aluminum] and you'd just have a spike in you, kind of like Hemalurgy—but not like Hemalurgy. It's inert, but you know what I mean.

    Question

Which suggests you can't actually Awaken aluminum.

    Brandon Sanderson

No. It's not going to hold a charge.

    Kurkistan

I assume you can't Forge it, either.

    Brandon Sanderson

No. In fact the unForgable metal-

    Argent

    Ralkalest?

    Brandon Sanderson

    There's an unForgeable metal mentioned.

    Kurkistan

Could we call it aluminum if we wanted to?

    Brandon Sanderson

Let's just say that aluminum through most cultures was considered a mythological metal, and when people could actually find some, they considered it more valuable than gold, in our culture. So just sayin’...

    Interview: Oct 12th, 2015

    Kurkistan

If you're on Threnody and you get withered by a shade, are you better off burning Allomantic aluminum, or tapping Feruchemical gold?

    Brandon Sanderson

(lots of laughing) [Some clarification on the question]They would both work pretty well. I would say if you burned aluminum, that would kind of have the effect that you are wanting it to have, which is the effect- negating and sucking out, so that’s probably safer. But the gold would work, too.

    Kurkistan

So would it be fair to describe withering as a kind of cancerous Forging-

    Brandon Sanderson

    Sure.

    Kurkistan

That just kind of slowly takes over your soul?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Sure. That's legit.

    rani

Any kind of Investiture to make a Shardblade?

    Brandon Sanderson

Not any but there are multiple methods. Some work better than others.

    rani

    Can you Forge a Shardblade?

    Brandon Sanderson

Um… *sighs* To Forge a Shardblade, meaning make a regular sword through Forgery into a shardblade, would require so much Investiture it’s like asking if we can make lead into gold using a particle accelerator. Yes but it's horribly, horribly, horribly inefficient.

    Patrick Diomedes

If the technology for 3D printing, CNC milling and the like existed on Sel, would a Forger be able to use it to create stamps, or would they have to do it by hand.

    Brandon Sanderson

They would be able to, but since they have to still create the stamps themselves, they'd have to be the ones to model/draw the stamps. (I take that to mean that a forger couldn't just download someone else's stamp and print it out and use it)

    Interview: Dec 6th, 2016

    Question

If you Soulstamp somebody to give them a Connection to Arelon, and they became an Elantrian, could they become an Elantrian, and if the Soulstamp were removed, would they remain?

    Brandon Sanderson

Okay, you’re asking a better one than people have asked. I will go ahead and RAFO this with the caveat of why this might not work, is because, you might think you’re something, right? Like, this is not completely invisible, and so, whether the powers are going to follow those lines of Connection or not I will leave up to discussion, but it is a possibility worth theorizing upon.

    Question

So a Soulstamp doesn’t necessarily change the core of your Spiritual--

    Brandon Sanderson

It does, but it’s overriding it. It’s like Hemalurgy. What you are is still there underneath when it’s ripped away.

    Interview: Dec 6th, 2016

    Question

What if you Soulstamped a city?

    Brandon Sanderson

Soulstamped...the city. So if you’re a really good Forger...It is possible to do things like that, but it requires a lot of work and time. Just one thing to keep in mind with Soulstamps is that, anything that does this...rewriting your Spirit Web, like, requires Investiture. A lot of Investiture. For instance, what Shai can do is really cool, but what an Elantrian can do is gonna look a lot more dramatic, right? Shooting a column of fire, you would say ‘which takes more power, making the wall have flowers on it or shooting a column of fire?’ Making the wall have flowers takes a lot more Investiture. It’s a lot easier to pull off some dramatic effects with others, but the actual changing of the soul...So just keep in mind the extent, right? This is why you don’t see Shai Forging so the whole building disappears. Which is not outside of reason for a couple of Elantrians with the right program to put into place. But they could blow it up, essentially, that’s what they would do. Do keep in mind, people like to ask, you’ve probably seen people ask, ‘could I rewrite myself to be a Knight Radiant?’ Well… there are certain things that you just can’t fake without enough energy that it becomes impractical. Usually what I use as an example to that is: Yes, we can turn hydrogen into gold, if we wanted to. Right? It might take more energy than the earth creates in an entire year, but we can do that. I get a lot of questions like this ‘is it possible, is it possible?’ You should probably be like, ‘is it possible, with reasonable amounts of energy provided by one Invested person.

    Interview: Dec 6th, 2016

    Question

If you Stamp yourself, so you have an overridden Spirit Web, and then you get Spiked… [laughter] What would happen?

    Brandon Sanderson

We’ve actually worked this one out, so. [laughter]

    Question

Well, you’d die, or very close to it, but would the Stamp revert?

    Brandon Sanderson

So what’s probably going to happen here is that you’re going to rip off the Investiture you’ve put on your soul, and your own soul will have less damage. Now, the Spike is only gonna get the-- the Spike, you’re like ‘what will it do?’ It will do what you’ve been overwritten with, but remember, becoming an Allomancer requires so much energy, and things like--Ehh, it is theoretically possible in the Cosmere to rewrite yourself ‘you’re an allomancer’, someone Spikes you to get this. The Investiture doesn’t care that it was fake on you, you have managed to get that Investiture to work. Uhh, this is really tough. And really, like, you need Connection, and Investiture, but yes it rips off, and you have made a Spike that makes you an Allomancer, even though the person was a forger. But this is the kind of stuff that is like the thought experiments for physicists in the Cosmere as opposed to, yenno.
