    Interview: Sep, 2012

    InsurrectionistFungus

Does aluminium have any effect on the other Allomantic metals aside from iron/steel and zinc/brass? If yes, does that include god metals and their alloys?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes and no.

    Interview: Sep, 2012

    FireArcadia

Is there any use to being a Copper compounder, from a feruchemical point of view? I think the same point would also apply to an Aluminium compounder.

    Brandon Sanderson

Some combinations, like some abilities themselves, aren't really that useful. That said, being able to compound copper...that could do some things. Aluminum, not so much.

    Interview: Sep, 2012

    Douglas

What benefit does an aluminum savant get? Yes, I know this would normally never happen because aluminum burns itself up. Suppose a mad scientist with a willing Mistborn test subject shoved a feeding tube down the Mistborn's throat to pump in a continuous stream of aluminum, replenishing it steadily so there's always a new unburned supply. Add another tube to pump out excess water if necessary. What would he discover? Alternatively, what would Sazed with his Shard-granted knowledge know?

    Brandon Sanderson

Ha, that IS a little silly of a method. However, on the extreme end of aluminum, I have in the notes the possibility of cleansing the spirit of unwanted effects of other investitures. You'd get really good at this, and maybe even be able to cleanse the body of other impurities.

    Interview: Jun 20th, 2009

    Andrew the Great

If someone aluminum or duralumin burned the Feruchemically charged metals, what would happen?

    Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased)

Basically the same thing as above, except with aluminum. Aluminum, they would just go away.

    Interview: Mar 6th, 2014

    Question

Would aluminum give an atium shadow? Like if someone threw an aluminum spear?

    Brandon Sanderson

The aluminum would not give an atium shadow. Good question.

    Interview: Mar 21st, 2014

    Question

In other worlds, are we seeing any magics already? Like, Allomancy might be in Roshar?

    Brandon Sanderson

You've seen people using Allomancy in Roshar before.

    Question

You said that on Roshar the only reason they have aluminum is that they can Soulcast it, right? I think you said something like that … maybe? I was wondering how that would work, if an Allomancer were to--

    Brandon Sanderson

Aluminum has some weird properties on all of the magic systems, not just allomancy. It does not have the same effect, but aluminum has some bizarre effects.

    Interview: Apr 16th, 2014

    nalesean

If a Feruchemist using an aluminum metalmind stored their identity to zero, then filled a coppermind with all of their knowledge, would another Feruchemist with an identity set to zero be able to access the first Feruchemist's coppermind?

    Brandon Sanderson

[Paraphrased] I'm not going to tell you a definite yes or no, this is something that needs to be saved for future books, but you are thinking along the correct lines about how identity works regarding Feruchemists.

    Interview: Jan 31st, 2015

    Sirce Luckwielder

"Can aluminum be used to destroy a Feruchemist's metalmind if the person burning aluminum were to cut his hand and place it on the metalmind."

    Brandon Sanderson

He said that cutting the hand would probably not be enough, but that I was on the right track (I assume this means that you could pierce your hand with a metalmind, or a Hemalurgic spike and destroy it with aluminum).

    Interview: Feb 20th, 2015

    Kurkistan

Speaking of interfering, if you shot an aluminum bullet through a time bubble, what would happen?

    Brandon Sanderson

Oooooh, that's a good question. I'm gonna' RAFO that one. It's an excellent question.

    Interview: Oct 12th, 2015

    Kurkistan

Is it possible to Compound aluminum, or will it all just poof away the second you start trying it?

    Brandon Sanderson

(laugh) I have actually been asked that. And I RAFO'd them, so I'm going to RAFO you.

    Interview: Oct 12th, 2015

    Argent

Lerasium grants all Allomantic powers when burned. Atium, when used as a spike, can steal any power. Is there a way to create a metalmind that can store anything?

    Brandon Sanderson

There is a way to create a metalmind that can store anything.

    Argent

    Harmonium?

    Brandon Sanderson

I’m not saying; I gave you an answer… [AKA: RAFO]

    Interview: Oct 12th, 2015

    Argent

On Nalthis, can aluminum prevent somebody from Returning? So if you kill somebody with aluminum and leave the weapon in them?

    Brandon Sanderson

    [Long pause]I don't think that's going to be enough. I think that…

    Question

    Different way then?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah there are totally ways. I don’t think that that’s going to be enough. There's a difference between being inert and blocking Investiture, and actually sucking out Investiture. If you stuck Nightblood inside of a corpse; there are certain things… if you had a larkin or whatever sitting there that ingests the Investiture as it was coming in, that would prevent [Returning]. I think with aluminum you would just have somebody that comes alive with a wound, so maybe... But I think it would just heal around [the aluminum] and you'd just have a spike in you, kind of like Hemalurgy—but not like Hemalurgy. It's inert, but you know what I mean.

    Question

Which suggests you can't actually Awaken aluminum.

    Brandon Sanderson

No. It's not going to hold a charge.

    Kurkistan

I assume you can't Forge it, either.

    Brandon Sanderson

No. In fact the unForgable metal-

    Argent

    Ralkalest?

    Brandon Sanderson

    There's an unForgeable metal mentioned.

    Kurkistan

Could we call it aluminum if we wanted to?

    Brandon Sanderson

Let's just say that aluminum through most cultures was considered a mythological metal, and when people could actually find some, they considered it more valuable than gold, in our culture. So just sayin’...

    Interview: Oct 12th, 2015

    Kurkistan

If you're on Threnody and you get withered by a shade, are you better off burning Allomantic aluminum, or tapping Feruchemical gold?

    Brandon Sanderson

(lots of laughing) [Some clarification on the question]They would both work pretty well. I would say if you burned aluminum, that would kind of have the effect that you are wanting it to have, which is the effect- negating and sucking out, so that’s probably safer. But the gold would work, too.

    Kurkistan

So would it be fair to describe withering as a kind of cancerous Forging-

    Brandon Sanderson

    Sure.

    Kurkistan

That just kind of slowly takes over your soul?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Sure. That's legit.

    Interview: Oct 9th, 2015

    Question

Was it a deliberate move on your part to make it so that on Scadrial, people who wear aluminum foil hats are actually safe from mind control?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah, yeah that was a big inside joke. When I realized it would work, I had to put it in. I’m doing some fun things. The gun thing is another one I’m very fond of.

    Interview: Oct 9th, 2015

    Question

(Heavily paraphrased for clarity) Can you drop a speed bubble whose border goes through a piece of aluminum?

    Brandon Sanderson

I think you can’t do that, it would cause the bubble to collapse. Verbatim: It’s probably going to act like you are trying to set up speed bubble on something that’s too small and moving

    Footnote

Note: Alternatively (obviously I can’t see any gestures going on), this could be interpreted as: Q*: If you dropped a speed bubble whose border goes through an aluminum tube, is the inside of the tube affected by the time distortion? A*: No, the bubble would go around the tube. This was a Sharder questions, so a clarification would be very nice. Note response: This is essentially correct, and Brandon understood what I meant. -- FS

    Interview: Oct 9th, 2015

    Question

Is aluminum shielding from emotional Allomancy strictly line of sight? So, can someone in the basement bypass somebody’s aluminum hat on the first floor?

    Brandon Sanderson

No, they could not. You just put enough aluminum there and it disrupts.

    Question

So it disrupts like a field.

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yep.

    Interview: Oct 6th, 2015

    CoinShooter

Could Aluminum act as a sort of shield from other forms of investiture? As in, could an aluminum misting lashed to something burn aluminum and dispel the stormlight?

    Brandon Sanderson

RAFO (called it before I asked, but I just had to ask).

    Interview: Feb 17th, 2016

    Question

Aluminum, when you burn aluminum, does it actually destroy the metals or just take away their power?

    Brandon Sanderson

    It destroys the metals.

    Question

    Same with chromium?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yeah.

    Question

So it actually gets rid of the metals?

    Brandon Sanderson

It actually trans-- It does a-- matter, energy, investiture are the same things in the cosmere. You have some sort of transfer happening relating to those things.

    Question

The question sort of relates to metal poisoning--

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah, you would not get metal poisoning after that.

    Interview: Feb 25th, 2016

    Question

Are the Shardblade practice guards... Are they made of aluminum?

    Brandon Sanderson

U-huh! *laughs* Good question! RAFO! But you have an excellent question, you're the first to ask that, and I think you're a very smart person.

    Interview: Feb 25th, 2016

    Question

The guards that are used on the Shardblades, are those made of aluminum?

    Brandon Sanderson

[After commenting that 17th Shard must be talking about it] This is an excellent question that is well asked, and people are thinking along the right lines. I haven't answered 100%, but people are thinking the right way.

    Interview: Feb 27th, 2016

    Paladin Brewer

The metal used on Shardblades for training, is it made out of aluminum?

    Brandon Sanderson

This question seemed to get the most reaction out of him. He laughed and smiled, and said "that's a very smart question, well done, you're on the right track."

Why don't mistborn use aluminum vials?

    Brandon Sanderson

Because they are too rare and expensive, though aluminum utilization is increasing in the AOL era.

    Interview: Dec 3rd, 2016

    wicktacular

At the end of Hero of Ages, it's significant that 1/16 of the soldiers who got sick were Atium mistings. We know now that there's more than 16 metals - what exactly happened there?

    Brandon Sanderson

Well, you have to remember, by that point, Preservation wasn't entirely there. He was mostly concerned with leaving hints, clues, with the number 16, towards his plan.

    wicktacular

So, were the other remaining group of soldiers that fell sick all still mistings of the other base metals?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes.

    wicktacular

So, did Preservation bump out one of the base metal types so those could be Atium mistings? And if so, which was it?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, that's right. It would probably have been one of the metals that was difficult to get at that level of technology. It would have been Chromium - Chromium would be hard gather at that time. Actually, no, it would have been Aluminum. (about a minute later, while signing someone else's book) - Hold on, there's a caveat to that last answer. Let me finish signing this and expand on that. So, it would still have been Aluminum, but not for the reason your thinking. It would have been Aluminum, but there's an asterisk next to that answer.

    Interview: Dec 3rd, 2016

    PatrickDiomedes

I asked whether Aluminum blocking investiture is simply an on/off situation, or whether different amounts/different alloys would inhibit it in different degrees

    Brandon Sanderson

    It was theoretically possible.
