    Interview: Feb 28th, 2011

    gunslingers ()

The number 10 seems to be a recurring theme in this world. Are the Ten Fools the antithesis of the ten orders of the Knights Radiant?

Have you ever killed off a character and later regretted it?

When writing a battle scene in which thousands die do those deaths affect you in any way?

    Brandon Sanderson

First Question: Yes, ten is a number of mythological import in the world. The Ten Fools are, essentially, the opposites of the Ten Heralds—who each represented an ideal. (Those ideals were later adopted by the orders of Knights Radiant, so yes, there is a connection—but there's a step between them.)

    Interview: Nov 10th, 2011

    Question

Was the Almighty still alive when the Heralds packed it in, and did the Radiants pack it in in direct response to what the Heralds did?

    Brandon Sanderson

The Radiants did NOT abandon their post as a response to the Heralds. The Radiants abandoned it for some other reason which will become evident eventually. The Almighty was still around when the Heralds did their thing.

    Interview: Dec, 2010

    Louise

Which one will you focused more in the future, the Heralds or Radiants? Will you dig deeper into each of Heralds story and some of Radiants?

    Brandon Sanderson (Goodreads)

I feel that I should probably RAFO this one. We are going to delve into the Radiants as orders a lot. But the Radiants as individuals? Depends on what you mean. Kaladin is well on the path toward becoming one of them, though he's not one yet, as Teft is quick to point out. So if you mean focusing on actual Knights Radiant, we'll have to see if anyone actually manages to become one.

The Heralds are integral to the entire story, which is why the Prelude focuses on them. Since someone showed up at the end of the book claiming to be one of them, I think you can obviously expect some attention to be drawn there. Who each of the Heralds are and what their natures were is important.

    Interview: Dec, 2010

    Dustin

Can a Herald's blade/equipment be um....adopted? I only ask because Dalinar seems to be lacking one and that Herald at the end did kick the bucket in his capital and he's gonna need more than armor when Szeth shows up.

    Brandon Sanderson (Goodreads)

Someone who is not himself or herself a Herald can indeed use one of the Honorblades.

Just because he fell doesn't mean he's dead.

    Interview: Nov 19th, 2011

    Orome

This post is for anything info that was gleaned at the recent signing at Forbidden Planet in London.

To start with, The question i asked him was, 'Is Shalash the lady smashing up the art in The Way of Kings?'

    Brandon Sanderson

He was apprehensive to say it out loud, but he wrote in my copy of Alloy of Law 'Shalash appears in The Way of Kings'! I shall get a scan of that once i am able, and ill put it up in here. He also said to me 'you'd be surprised at how many of the Heralds appear in the book', so i guess another re-read is in order!

    Footnote

Brandon has also hinted that Jezrien was in the book. (See signed cover.)

    Interview: Jul 2nd, 2011

    Marc Aplin

Okay, the next question we haveI think this one you might have answered beforebut have we met all the main point-of-view characters yet? Or, if not, what percentage are we talking?

    Brandon Sanderson

You have met almost all of them. Let me do a count... Let's see. The main characters in the book arein the seriesKaladin, and Dalinar, Adolin, Jasnah, Shallan, and Navani, whom you all met in this book and most of them had viewpoints. Szeth, Taravangian, and Taln. And one of the other Heralds; I'm not going to tell you who that is. But I think you've met...you have, I'm sure, met that person; I know he's in there. And so, I think you've met them all, basically. Taln is the person who shows up in the epilogue.

    Marc Aplin

    Excellent.

    Footnote

Brandon confirmed that Shalash was seen in The Way of Kings, but he also hinted there were others.

    Fire Arcadia

How many Heralds appear in The Way of Kings

    Brandon Sanderson

More than you might expect. Some have appeared, some have been mentioned but not appeared.

    Footnote

One of these Heralds that appeared is Shalash.

    Interview: Oct 1st, 2013

    Question

None of the Heralds mention or address the Almighty in the opening scene of The Way of Kings; it's a little strange, considering they are his champions. Have they seen or spoken to the Almighty?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, the Heralds have spoken with the Almighty. They also feel that what has been done to them is partially his fault.

    Question

    So Nohadon's still alive, right?

    Brandon Sanderson

... RAFO! Why would you say that Nohadon's still alive?

    Question

    I know he's still alive.

    Brandon Sanderson

Why would you say he's still alive?

    Question

It's the perfect trick, that you're gonna bring back Nohadon. Um. It's my feeling about things.

    Interview: Oct 14th, 2013

    Wetlander

Was Odium able to Splinter Honor because the Heralds abandoned the Oathpact?

    Brandon Sanderson

Good question. Um, their abandonment of the Oathpact is related... but mostly tangentially. If I was pinned down on that, I would say no.

    Wetlander

Is there any of the Oathpact still functioning because of Taln's continued participation?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes, indeed.

    Interview: Oct 14th, 2013

    Question

Is the Palanaeum named for Palah?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes. In fact, it was named based on—it was Greek in our world—the Athenaeum? It was based off of that.

    Wetlander

    Did we see Palah?

    Brandon Sanderson

I believe every one of the Heralds is mentioned or shown somewhere in the first book.

    Wetlander

Someone was wondering whether the old woman who was wandering around the Palanaeum was her.

    Brandon Sanderson

That is a very good guess. I won't say specifically, because some of them are intended to be more obvious and some of them are intended to be red herrings. So, that was a very good guess.

    Question

I asked a question at the panel, I asked if the person you refuse to say who he is, I was trying to talk about Taln.

    Brandon Sanderson

    Oh!

    Question

    Not Hoid.

    Brandon Sanderson

    So what about Taln?

    Question

Is there anything you'll tell us about him?

    Brandon Sanderson

What do you want to know? Ask me a specific question.

    Question

    Is he Rosharan?

    Brandon Sanderson

Is he Rosharan? Taln is Rosharan.

    Question

    [audio obscured]

    Brandon Sanderson

    Define Rosharan, how about that?

    Question

    Native to Roshar.

    Brandon Sanderson

    Are the Heralds...

    Brandon Sanderson

The Heralds are from the same place that Taln is from.

    Interview: Mar 19th, 2014

    Question ()

What caused a Desolation to end? Was it just the defeat of Odium's forces? Because the Desolations start when the Heralds break under torture.

    Brandon Sanderson

Because the Heralds can no longer be in existence. There is a certain period of time that they can be there, and after that, if they're there, they will start a new one. So the Heralds do need to leave for a Desolation to end.

    Question

Oh. So they've got a time limit.

    Brandon Sanderson

They do. Otherwise the Desolation will start again. What they discovered is not all of them have to. As long as one remains, the Desolation will not start again.

    Question

So, by the nine leaving, did that actually break the Oathpact for them? Did it change the cycle of Desolations?

    Brandon Sanderson

They have not completely broken the Oathpact, despite what they may think.

    Interview: Mar 19th, 2014

    Question ()

Are the Heralds actually aware that Taln is back?

    Brandon Sanderson

Are the Heralds aware that Taln is back? Uh, you're implying that this person actually is Taln. [The smile on Brandon's face at this moment was the best, most excruciatingly awful smile ever. And we thought Peter was a tease.] Which is not guaranteed. It's not guaranteed. However, the return of the Voidbringers does indeed indicate to them, in their mind, that he would have returned.

    Question

So they assume because the Voidbringers are returning--

    Brandon Sanderson

Because the Voidbringers are returning, would be a clue to them that Taln has returned.

    Interview: Mar 19th, 2014

    Question ()

How many parties were there to the original Oathpact?

    Brandon Sanderson

The Heralds and Honor. They thought that by walking away from their oaths, that it would break the Oathpact. They're going to find out that it's not quite as broken as they had previously thought (meaning the Heralds).

Can the Heralds Surgebind without their Blades and if not are they under the same restrictions that others are?

    Interview: Apr 2nd, 2015

    Ruro272

Will we see all of the Heralds doing things in the upcoming books?

    Brandon Sanderson

The back five books are all about the Heralds. Two of them claim to be Heralds..... Two of the point-of-views will be Heralds.

    Footnote

This fits well with what I've read from this site; specifically Taln and Ash are the Herald POVs in the back five according to other WoB. The interesting tidbit here is that "two of them claim to be Heralds" with the implied "but...." in his tone.

    Interview: Feb 17th, 2016

    Question

I kind of envision the Old Magic working a little bit like Hemalurgy, where some-- takes a part of the Physical DNA of the person and transmutes it onto the Cognitive DNA because everything seems to be a Cognitive shift for the person, am I thinking along the right lines?

    Brandon Sanderson

You are thinking along very-- Yes you are thinking along the right lines. I won’t tell you exactly but you are thinking along the right lines.

    Question

And then the curse Kelek’s Breath, is that a clue as to the origin of some of the Heralds?

    Brandon Sanderson

Erm… Explain why you think it might be.

    Question

    Uh, well, Warbreaker--

    Brandon Sanderson

    Mmhmm

    Question

    The use of Breath…

    Brandon Sanderson

    Uhuh

    Question

It seems like they have similar strength to somebody who has extra Endowment

    Brandon Sanderson

    Okay.

    Question

So I’m wondering if they come from-- I can’t remember the name..

    Brandon Sanderson

The Heralds-- You’re wondering if the Heralds come from Nalthis?

    Question

    Yeah.

    Brandon Sanderson

The Heralds do not come from Nalthis, but that is an excellent question.

    Interview: Apr 8th, 2016

    Blightsong

Is it normal for people to become connected to an area after being there for a bit, like with Kel and wherever he was when he found the Ire, or is something special going on?

    Brandon Sanderson

It is normal for a cognitive shadow to get stuck to places, because they exist through investiture it is normal for them to get tied to an area. Kelsier was still in Scadrial when he found the Ire. This happened with Odium and the two shards on Roshar, Preservation to Ruin, and the Heralds (To Roshar? Braize?). (I think this is basically what happens with shards when they invest on a planet, so this same thing happens at smaller levels than shards.)

    Footnote

(After about an hour and a half he started answering more questions, so I sat nearby and wrote the gist of the questions and answers he was getting. Thsi next part is going to be paraphrased, but fairly accurate. It wasn't as rapid fire as it had been, as I and other people didn't want to keep interruption him while he was playing magic.)

    Interview: Apr 23rd, 2016

    Question

Are there people on Roshar who are pretending to be Heralds who are not?

    Brandon Sanderson

There are definitely lots of people who have claimed to be Heralds who were not.

    Question

You said “have.” The question was, are there?

    Brandon Sanderson

I’m sure there are people around...[Laughter] I’m sure you can go to any city in the United States and find someone who claims to be Jesus, right? So yes! Absolutely!

    CCQ

Did Ishar intentionally deceive Nalan or does Ishar have bad info that he passed on?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes and no. All of the heralds are insane.

    CCQ

So I clarified the question to being did Ishar know that he was lying to Nalan

    Brandon Sanderson

got a RAFO but he added something that seemed to mean that Ishar could perhaps see the future and that each insanity was unique and that uniqueness played a part in the info. Not really sure on the last part.

    Interview: Dec 6th, 2016

    Question

Have we seen cameos of Heralds on other Shardworlds?

    Brandon Sanderson

The Heralds are tied to the system by the magic that permeates them. They could not leave. It’s part of the magic. Some would call them Cognitive Shadows, right? Whether they are or not. ‘Cognitive Shadow’ is a very ambiguous term in the Cosmere. It means, basically your soul-- Investiture replaced your soul, and permeated your soul, and your soul continues to exist, but you are usually Invested with something, that’s tied, and you’re basically like pure Investiture then. You’re tied to the thing you’re Connected to. Most of the things that you’re gonna see like that, traveling is going to be very difficult, unless you know how to do it. You have seen people do it.

    Question

    Who?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Vasher.

    Question

    Sure, sure.

    Brandon Sanderson

You have seen people do it.
