    Interview: Mar 11th, 2014

    Question

Lift is my favorite character even though she was only in that one chapter.

    Brandon Sanderson

You will see much more of Lift in the future. Lift is seeded there because she will be very important later on.

    Footnote

Brandon has said that Lift will be one of the focus/flashback characters for the "back five".

    Interview: Mar 19th, 2014

    Question

I was wondering if any of the characters from interludes will end up with their own books.

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, they will. Lift, specifically, is one of the characters in the back five. I think she might be the only one who has had a view point so far. That’s, um, no... There are others. So, yes, interlude characters will end up with their own books later on. Right now they’re side characters.

    AhoyMatey

Why does Lift feel that Darkness isn't a real person?

    Brandon Sanderson

Because Lift is an interesting person who has her own perspective on the world.

    Footnote

Darkness is presumably the herald known as Nale.

    Outis

Do you know the order of 6-10?

    Brandon Sanderson

I know whose they are but I haven't decided the order. Lift is one, Taln is one. The person who calls himself Taln.

    Footnote

6-10 presumably means books 6-10 of Stormlight Archive.

    Outis

How many orders have we seen so far? I know there're the four identifed at the end.

    Brandon Sanderson

You've seen Jasnah's, so that's the fifth one. You've seen Lift which gets you to six. You've seen Ym.

    Interview: Mar 21st, 2014

    Question

Are we going to get a book with Lift?

    Brandon Sanderson

You are going to get a book with Lift as a main character. It is going to happen I promise. And I'll probably do some more shorts with Lift because she is so much fun.

    EHyde

Lift's spren refers to the Nightwatcher as Mother, right?

    Brandon Sanderson

They definitely call somebody Mother. The implication in the text is that it's the Nightwatcher.

    Brandon Sanderson

    She's an Edgedancer.

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, Lift is one of the characters who was originally planned for the back five.

    Interview: Apr 16th, 2014

    Question

Lift stands outside Kredik Shaw, her goal is to eat the Lord Ruler's lunch, can she get a way with it?

    Brandon Sanderson

I think she totally can. She's Lift, she'll just get him while he's sleeping.

    Footnote

Why is the Lord Ruler napping at lunch time???

    Interview: Apr 16th, 2014

    Question

Will we get more of Lift?

    Brandon Sanderson

You will get a lot more with Lift. She was written into the outline from the very begining as one of the people who gets a book of her own. With Lift part of the inspiration was-- Boy, what was the inspiration for Lift? When I was building the Stormlight Archive I said "I want the Knights Radiant to run the gamut of different character styles, ages, and types of story." And when you say "knight"-- When I say knight you imagine one thing, what you don't imagine is a thirteen-year-old hispanic girl, right? And I said "I want to have the people who are in the Knights Radiant to not be the standard what you think of." They are the entire world's cultures having different people. And so I said "What are somebody who does not fit that mold?" That you would say is not a knight. Lift was partially developed out of me wanting to build a character who was awesome but was so different from what everyone would think of. ‘Cause you say knight and they think of white dude in armor and I wanted something very different from that. And that's where she came from. It also came partially from my wife reading a lot of fantasy and complaining and she's like "You know the asians show up in fantasy, asian culture inspires a lot. European culture of course does. You see a lot of these things but where are the hispanics?" Yeah there's one. So she challenged me to put a hispanic culture in my books because I had never done it before and so Lift is an outgrowth of that, so are the Herdazians. They are meant to be sort of in the same way that the Alethi are inspired by Korean culture, mashed up with this sort of concept of medieval knights. Shallan is based a little off of Western American/Europe culture. The Herdazians are launching off some of the original hispanic concepts. So the thing is, you want every culture to be new and original but you are working from somewhere. And the problem is we all work from the same stories for so long that is part of the reason why fantasy is starting to feel so stale.

    Interview: Mar 12th, 2015

    Lightylantern (Reddit)

Thanks a lot for doing this, Brandon. You're my favourite author, and I have a million things I want to ask you, but since I'm not the only one asking questions, I'll ask the ones most important to me.

    1. I'm fairly invested in the pairings of The Stormlight Archive, with my favourite being Jasnah/Szeth. Do either of these two have any romance planned in their future?
    2. In The Hero of Ages, Demoux gets together with a woman named Aslydin. He's then seen on Roshar in The Way of Kings. Knowing how loyal Demoux is, he wouldn't just leave Aslydin behind like that. Is she connected to his reasons for becoming a member of the Seventeenth Shard?
    3. I'm pretty interested in the integration of magic and sport, like in Harry Potter and The Legend of Korra. Will we be seeing any allomantic sports in the second Mistborn trilogy?
    4. Was the guy Dalinar met in his flashback really Nohadon?
    5. Will Lift get a Shardfork?
    6. Finally, can you tell us what Regalia's weakness is? We never did find that out.

Again, thanks a ton for doing this.

    Brandon Sanderson (Reddit)

    1) I am purposefully vague about upcoming romantic pairings in my books, because most of the characters would not want to be defined by their romantic inclinations--and at the top of that list is Jasnah. So I'll remain quiet on this one for now. Sorry.
    2) Aslydin is in the Seventeeth Shard, and had her own work to be about. I've given subtle clues about her before, but the ethnicity of the name should strike you.
    3) Probably the third. Scadrial is behind on a couple of things, technologically, and they've been very practically minded lately. I have some hints of professional sports in the Era Two books, but they're slight.
    4) So far as he knows.
    5) You know, she's likely to do something like that...
    6) Not ready to talk about this one yet, as I haven't finished the third book yet. It's likely irrelevant, but I'll RAFO in case I decide to reference it.

    Interview: Apr 24th, 2016

    Ted

Does Lift's metabolic waste include crem?

    Brandon Sanderson

[Laughs] That’s an excellent question. I’m not going to answer that, but it’s an excellent question.

    Ted

    Wow, you’re RAFOing that?

    Brandon Sanderson

You got a laugh. I didn’t say RAFO, I said I’m not going to answer that, which could be considered two different answers.

    Interview: Apr 24th, 2016

    Question

I’m a huge Dalinar fan. But are you going to have more of Lift and [Ash?] and some of the interlude characters?

    Brandon Sanderson

Lift you are going to see the most of in the later books. She’s set up to be one of the main characters in the second 5. I have already written two scenes with her in them, but I haven’t written one with her view point yet. But the Cosmere collection which is on my short list will have a new Lift novella in it and that will have an audio edition.

    Interview: Feb 20th, 2015

    Argent

Does Lift turn food into investiture directly or is it similar to the metals on--

    Brandon Sanderson

    Similar to the metals.

    Argent

    So like a gate?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes.

    Argent

    Okay, that’s good to know.

    Brandon Sanderson

She can metabolize-- She can draw-- It’s not actually the food, it’s-- It’s not like the metals, not exactly. It’s not-- What she can do is she can metabolize into investiture instead of sugar. Does that make sense?

    Argent

    Yeah.

    Brandon Sanderson

We metabolize food into sugar. She can metabolize it into investiture. Does that make sense?

    Argent

That makes a lot of sense. So if she eats--

    Brandon Sanderson

She’s got to have a blood sugar spike.

    Argent

So if she eats like a cake it will give her more investiture--

    Brandon Sanderson

Faster. It will give her faster.

    Argent

Whereas if she eats a vegetable...

    Brandon Sanderson

Vegetable... More calories is going to equal more. But the better comparison would be a sausage and bread. Because bread is a fast blood sugar spike and the sausage is not. And that’s how I’m working in my head. It’s kind of a magical version of a blood sugar spike and I have it happen to her faster than it could happen. Like normally you eat a piece of bread and your blood sugar spikes in a half hour, it’s going to go faster for Lift.

    Argent

    Her’s is like five minutes.

    Brandon Sanderson

Her’s is like five minutes, but a sausage would be slower.

    Interview: Feb 17th, 2016

    Question

[Note: This question was asked by a young boy sitting near the front.] So for the Stormlight Archive series–

    Brandon Sanderson

The Stormlight Archive? How old are you? [audience laughter]

    Question

    Nine?

    Brandon Sanderson

Nine? And you’re reading the Stormlight Archive? [loud cheering]

    Question

So the character Lift, with her powers, why does she only have to eat food instead of sucking in stormlight?

    Brandon Sanderson

So Lift is a really weird one. She visited the Old Magic and asked something very strange, and the Old Magic didn’t know how to treat that, and so answered with something equally strange. So you will actually see what happened with Lift and things like that, but suffice it to say some really weird things are going on.

    Interview: Apr 23rd, 2016

    Question

If Lift ate something that had like, gold leaf on it, could she change that gold leaf into Investiture or something?

    Brandon Sanderson

So the gold leaf would probably pass through her system.

    Question

    So she wouldn’t be…?

    Brandon Sanderson

Mhm, yes, that things that she eats that she can metabolize, she can turn into Stormlight.

    Question

So what would happen if she ate Nightblood? [laughter]

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah, eating Nightblood would not be a smart idea for anyone. [more laughter] Nightblood would eat you. In Soviet Russia, sword eats you? I don’t know…

    Footnote

Brandon says here that she can convert items that she can metabolize into stormlight, but during the Out of Excuses 2016 he implies that Lift can convert anything she ingests into stormlight including non food

    Out of Excuses 2016 (Paraphrased)

    Gary Singer

Could Lift convert food from other Cosmere worlds into Stormlight?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes. Lift’s spiritweb has something changed about it to allow converting mass to Investiture directly.

    Footnote

Based on Brandon’s answer, I'm not even sure she has to metabolize the food. It could be that she can burn anything she can swallow.

    AndrewHB

I asked if in the future, he would have Lift use a Trident as her main Shard weapon.

    Interview: Dec 3rd, 2016

    yulerule

I also asked about the connection between the spren and surgebinder, such that the spren turns into what the surgebinder wants, like In Edgedancer, Lift turns into a bar of metal and into a Shardfork. Wyndle himself isn't "in tune" with Lift, so his turning into something that she needs with no prior warning ...

    Brandon Sanderson

Since the spren fill in the soul, they're connected on that level, so like their minds are separated, but since the souls are melded/connected/same that the spren can turn into stuff the Surgebinder wants. This is heavily paraphrased.
