An Hour With Harriet

2012-04-30: I had the great pleasure of speaking with Harriet McDougal Rigney about her life. She's an amazing talent and person and it will take you less than an hour to agree.

    Interview: Dec 9th, 2002

    Question

How does the idea of souls apply to constructs such as Nym and Trollocs? Could either of them be reborn?

    Robert Jordan

To whoever put this one forward, this is one of the best questions I've ever gotten! Nym and Trollocs both have souls, and either could be reborn, but since Nym were a pure construct (i.e. each of them was individually made, like hand-crafting) a Nym would not be reborn as a Nym. You might say that a Nym's soul was borrowed temporarily from the supply of souls awaiting rebirth. A Trolloc, however, bears a twisted, or corrupted soul, and would be reborn as a Trolloc. Though frankly, a Trolloc's soul is such a pitiful thing, it hardly seems worth calling a soul.

    Interview: Oct 21st, 2005

    Question

Why can't Shadowspawn pass through gateways?

    Robert Jordan

It's because they're artificial constructs. They can't tolerate the passage.

    Question

So would a Nym have the same problem?

    Robert Jordan

    Yes.

    Question

    How about Ogier?

    Robert Jordan

No. Ogier are not artificial constructs.

    Interview: Nov 17th, 2009

    Question

Are the Aiel linked in some way to the Ogier, in that they both have that capability in making things grow, and that they and the Nym all worked together in the scene from the Age of Legends?

    Brandon Sanderson

Well, everybody is connected in the Pattern, and certainly the Aiel would have threads connecting them to the Ogier. I can't really say anything too specific about it.

    Interview: Apr 17th, 2011

    blindillusion

Did Aginor have anything to do with creating the Nym?

    Brandon Sanderson

Not that I know of. I can MAFO that, but I'm like 95% sure on that.

    Harriet McDougal Rigney

The Green Man? No...he was good!

    Terez

You know, that's what I said to him last night, and then he was like, 'Well, you know, before the Bore was drilled, you know...that might have been what he was doing.' Because, you know, he had to get his experience in bioengineering somewhere.

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yeah...

    blindillusion

Yeah, where did he get his start?

    Brandon Sanderson

It is a good question, but I don't think so. I really don't. But, if you really want me to go to the notes and search it out, I will.

    blindillusion

That works for me. Thank you very much.

    Maria Simons

A quick search turned up nothing, I'm afraid. I'll try to remember to keep my eyes open for it.

    Interview: Feb 1st, 2013

    Question

What happens with the Green Man?

    Brandon Sanderson

I have no answer for you. It is not spoken of by RJ, so you will have to extrapolate yourself. I could make something up, but I don't do that anymore. If it was for the books, I could say "this needs to happen" with my creative freedom I was given, but at this point, with it done, that's no longer my job. So my answer is, I don't know! We know that the Nym must come back as the Ages turn, but we don't know when they will be "reinvented".
