    Interview: Nov 21st, 1998

    John Novak

[Is balefire the eternal death of the soul?]

    Robert Jordan

If someone is balefired, the Dark One can't reincarnate them. But they CAN be spun back out into the Wheel as normal. Balefire is NOT the eternal death of the soul. He also made a comment to the effect that even in the absence of balefire, there may be circumstances where the Dark One cannot bring someone back. There was a long line, so I didn't press.

    Footnote

RJ expanded on these other 'circumstances' in the TOR Questions of the Week (see Q3).

    Interview: 2011

    Twitter 2011 (WoT) (Verbatim)

    sleepinghour (6 January 2011)

Without revealing names, did RJ's notes say whether any character besides Rand is the reincarnation of someone important?

    Brandon Sanderson (6 January 2011)

This is a difficult one to answer, as I think even an answer might give some people too much of a clue. I'll consider.

    Interview: 2011

    Twitter 2011 (WoT) (Verbatim)

    Brandon Sanderson (7 January 2011)

I love that in our second Perrin viewpoint ever, he's already grumbling about being made a leader—right after expertly taking charge.

    BRANDON SANDERSON

Hm. Never noticed that before. First time Perrin sees Elyas's eyes: "Some memory tickled the back of Perrin's mind." Thoughts?

    BRANDON SANDERSON

Perrin later dismisses this premonition as simply "Oh, I was thinking of wolf eyes." But I wonder. Was he a Wolfbrother in past lives?

    TEREZ

RJ said that Wolfbrotherness is a soul trait. http://bit.ly/eVwO6u So, possible, though it wouldn't be a recent life.

    BRANDON SANDERSON

Well, that depends. I know a lot of fans believe that in most cases, lives are once per Age, with the soul going somewhere between.

    BRANDON SANDERSON

I can't remember if RJ ever said anything on this.

    TEREZ

Yeah, but Birgitte lived several lives in this Age. I always assumed it was because she can't channel (shorter lifespan).

    Interview: 2010

    Felix Pax (16 August 2010)

Should not Rand recall now, who Nynaeve was in 'past lives' post The Gathering Storm "Veins of Gold" chapter?

    Brandon Sanderson (16 August 2010)

Rand might have known Nynaeve in a past life, if she lived when he did. But he might not recognize her in a different body.

    Interview: 2010

    HBFFerreira (15 August 2010)

Noal Charin: was he drawn to Mat by the pull of a ta'veren, or was there something of a "Hero to Hornsounder" pull as well?

    Brandon Sanderson (16 August 2010)

You're making assumptions about Noal that have not been clarified in the text. ;)

    BRANDON SANDERSON

On a more serious note, total RAFO on whether Jain is/was/will be a Hero. It's been talked about for years and years.

    BRANDON SANDERSON

And I suspect that it will continue to be a source of discussion for some time. ;)

    HBFFERREIRA

Well, it's such a common assumption that I didn't even realize it hadn't been stated as true yet. :-p

    HBFFERREIRA

But while I'm assuming, I take it that Noal's past may be one of those things Robert Jordan didn't intend to reveal. :-p

    BRANDON SANDERSON (17 AUGUST)

RAFO on what RJ would or wouldn't reveal. :)

    FELIX PAX (16 AUGUST)

I wonder "when" will Farstrider's real background be exposed to Mat, Thom?

    FELIX PAX

At least four people should know who Farstrider really is: Loial, Elder Haman, Elder Arent, and Speaker Covril.

    FELIX PAX

Two other characters might know who Farstrider really is too: Birgitte from Ebou Dar, and Luca from Shangtai.

    FELIX PAX

Obviously a bunch of other older characters have a chance of recognizing Noal as Farstrider in Caemlyn too.

    BRANDON SANDERSON (17 AUGUST)

Continues whistling and walking the other direction.

    HBFFerreira (16 August 2010)

Elayne and Rand's babies... Calian and Shivan?

    Brandon Sanderson (17 August 2010)

    RAFO ... on Elayne's babes. :)

    Interview: 2011

    Twitter 2011 (WoT) (Verbatim)

    Andrew J. Parker (25 April 2011)

Can you settle a debate? Will Rand's soul be the Light's champion in every Age, or could it ever be someone else?

    Brandon Sanderson (25 April 2011)

I believe that Ishamael implies in the books he and Lews Therin have fought thousands of times.

    BRANDON SANDERSON

So at least one major character seems to believe it's always Rand. Whether he's right or not is another question.

    Footnote

Brandon is reported as having said on tour that Ishamael's and Rand's souls are often woven together in the Pattern, somewhat like Birgitte and Gaidal.

    Interview: 2011

    Twitter 2011 (WoT) (Verbatim)

    Terez (10 August 2011)

It's official: Construct theory wins. http://bit.ly/opIvk4 (Sorry @BrandSanderson ...sort of, anyway. :p) (It was out there, so...)

    Brandon Sanderson (10 August 2010)

Construct theory? Should I know what that is?

    TEREZ

Nope, it's a secret. :p (The Lews Therin debate - real/construct; another person/delusion caused by insanity and memories).

    FOOTNOTE—TEREZ

This led to a flurry of tweets between me and Luckers, none of which Brandon responded to, but he did have to step in at one point with an email to assure us that he didn't get in trouble with Team Jordan in any way for the GeekDad interview I linked. (It seemed the most logical explanation for his subsequent clamming up on the issue, and still does really, but it's the official word.) It's also at least a little bit likely that he was hedging on not knowing what construct theory is.

    Interview: 2011

    Twitter 2011 (WoT) (Verbatim)

    Terez (29 August 2011)

A signing report implies that you said that RJ changed his mind on whether balefire = eternal death of soul. This true?

    TEREZ

Here is a direct link to that particular report: http://bit.ly/nKpOSS @Blindillusion13 is unable to clarify.

    TEREZ

I always assumed what you really said (or really meant) was that you had believed it was the eternal death of the soul...

    TEREZ

...but then when you joined Team Jordan you learned differently (you said elsewhere that @MariaLSimons had to convince you).

    Brandon Sanderson (29 August 2011)

You have the right of it, Terez. I always believed that balefire = Eternal Death.

    BRANDON SANDERSON

Team Jordan instructed me that this was not the case, and balefire meant the Dark One could not recover the soul.

    Interview: Oct 9th, 1996

    Question

Is channeling ability strictly, or partly genetically based?

    Robert Jordan

Partially. [I] worked it a bit with some friends but just left it mostly hanging.

    Footnote

Erica clarified that RJ said all of that, so apparently RJ sometimes worked out plot elements with his friends. [Which seems odd, considering other things he has said about his creative process.]

    Interview: Nov 18th, 1998

Gender/soul rebirth he said is best illustrated by Mat and Birgitte. But he then said that there was more to it than that. Not sure what he meant exactly. Probably the point.

    SciFi.com Chat (Verbatim)

    Moderator

Here's a longish question from Linda that somehow fell in between the cracks... Part One from Linda: Since the ability to channel seems to be primarily linked to the soul, if a channeler is gentled/stilled, will this affect his/hers soul in a follow life as well, as in, will the ability to channel still be lost? Did THAT come through??

    Robert Jordan

    No.

    Moderator

    Hmmmmm.. Linda, I TRIED.

    Robert Jordan

(that was the answer...the answer is no)

    Moderator

    Oh!! Duh!

    Neptune

I think Linda is asking if the soul is immortal in Jordan's world.

    Moderator

    So...is it??

    Robert Jordan

    Yes, the soul is immortal.

    Interview: Aug 30th, 1999

    Question

Are you going to resurrect any more of the Forsaken because isn't that kind of cheating?

    Robert Jordan

Read and find out. Cheating? It isn't cheating. Remember that the Dark One is called the Lord of the Grave and the part of this whole thing is that the natural order of things is believed to be cyclic. You are born, you die, you are born again. To most of the people in this world the notion of living on forever is at least queasy making and to some considered to be an abomination. They don't want to. It would be doing something unnatural. After all, the next time you might be somebody better, somebody you like better than who you are now. You might be somebody richer or more famous or more skilled, or whatever. If you live forever under this set of beliefs, if you live forever as who you are, that's who you're stuck with. And you will never manage to top it.

    Question

    Or a different gender?

    Robert Jordan

    Well it's possible, yeah.

    Question

You've obviously resurrected two of the forsaken as a different gender—

    Robert Jordan

Have I? They send me FAQs. Frequently asked questions—FAQ. Various people will do a print out and send it to me. And I have read a couple of them, not one for several years. I'll tell you, in those FAQs, the last one I saw three or four years ago about a third of what they worked out was right and about a third of what they worked out was not right but not quite wrong, if they work on it some more... They think they've reached the end but they've not, it's like they stopped halfway. And the other third, I don't know what books they were reading.

    Footnote

There might have been some confusion here between transmigration and rebirth, because RJ has said elsewhere that gender is a soul trait. The Dark One can put someone into a body of the wrong gender, but a soul will always be reborn as the same gender, and the Dark One cannot change the gender of the soul (hence Balthamel still channeling saidin as Aran'gar).

    Interview: Sep 21st, 1999

    Robert Jordan

Oh, and one more thing: The Forsaken are reborn pretty much straight away when they die. "Not right on the heels, but close." That should make things interesting :)

    Joel.

    Footnote

Apparently Joel was talking about transmigration rather than rebirth (not that the official terminology is so clear), but even that assumption has to be called into question because of the delay with Aginor and Balthamel. Clearly they were just 'waking up' at the beginning of Lord of Chaos, and at that point they had been dead for some time. We do know from the TOR Questions of the Week that the Dark One has to grab the soul at the time of death, or shortly thereafter, but it may be that he can hold onto the soul for a while until a 'suitable body' is found.

    Interview: Sep 20th, 1999

    Robert Jordan

I asked about what happens to, and where the souls of the Forsaken go between being killed and resurrected by the Dark One, and RJ was evasive, saying that he wasn't going to go that deeply into the theology of the WoT with us (at the signing, or the whole series?). All he would say is that the transition from death to resurrection is almost instantaneous.

    Footnote

See the note on Joel Gilmore's account of the same question.

    Interview: Nov 11th, 2000

    Beth Silver from Austin, TX

Aside from the Heroes of the Horn waiting around in the World of Dreams, is there any kind of afterlife in WOT? Do the Heroes get a choice when they are linked to the Horn; can they retire, or take 'ordinary life' sabbaticals?

    Robert Jordan

In answer to the first question, yes, there is an ordinary afterlife. In answer to the second, no. You cannot decide NOT to be a Hero linked to the Wheel.

    Question

Is Sammael dead dead, or 'he will never return' dead?

    Robert Jordan

Sammael? [pronounce something like Sam-my-el] Sammael is dead. He's dead. He could be reborn. In another life. Without knowing anything of Sammael. He's not going to be reincarnated, he's not going to show up again.

    Interview: Jan 7th, 2003

    Question

The question is, with Rand and Lews Therin, do they have one soul or two souls in the body?

    Robert Jordan

They have one soul with two personalities. The reincarnation of souls does not mean reincarnation of personalities. The personality develops with each reincarnation of the soul. This is the cosmology that I have cobbled together.

    Interview: Apr, 2003

    Budapest Q&A (Verbatim)

    Question

I have an exciting question, maybe, we heard of making the Forsaken reborn, so has the original body any reflection to the mind of the Forsaken?

    Robert Jordan

Well, if a Forsaken dies and is reborn naturally, through the turning of the Wheel, no.

    Question

If then the Dark One puts him in a new body?

    Robert Jordan

Oh, if the Dark One puts him in a new body, it is for all intents and purposes the same person, with a new body. It is a shift of an entire person. The concept here, with the exception of the Gray Men: You've seen an Ogier who lost his soul. And in effect there's nobody home anymore. It is a body that lives and breathes, and will move if it is helped along. But it does not, there's nobody home in there. The Gray Men are slightly different. But they also have given up their souls. They've given up their souls in a way. Already, their souls are gone. But it's happened in a way that protects them against this emptiness, as if they're severed from the physical and spiritual side. And the spiritual side is gone, but the physical side remains so there is an intellect in that body, but no soul. And that's why they are Gray Men. Your eyes slip past them, the perfect assassins. You can look right at one and look on, never having realized you saw somebody there. So there's, when a soul ... (break in audio file)

    Budapest Q&A (Verbatim)

    Question

Is the ability to channel a property of the soul or the body?

    Robert Jordan

That's a RAFO, sorry. I don't know whether I want to put that in the books or not, but I wish to leave myself the opportunity to put it in without having it already known.

    Footnote

RJ answered in 2005 (2.5 years later) that it was both.

    Interview: Sep 3rd, 2005

    Question

Ishamael mentions in prior turnings of the Wheel that the soul of Lews Therin was raised up as the Shadow's champion, and if that is the case, who was the champion of the Creator?

    Robert Jordan

You believe Ishamael??? Sorry, man, but c'mon!

    Footnote

RJ effectively answered this question twice in 2003: 1) for tarvalon.net, and 2) for Tim Kington on the Crossroads of Twilight book tour. The first version of the question (which clearly refers to Rand, as Ishamael was talking about Rand, and RJ said Ishamael did not lie) seems to contradict this one, but it doesn't, really. RJ does not say here explicitly that Ishamael lied, so it seems that he was avoiding the question of who would be the Champion of the Light if Rand turned. He could hardly say RAFO without leading the reader to believe that Rand would be somehow turned to the Shadow before the end.

    Interview: Oct 4th, 2005

    Robert Jordan

For Randshammer, you might say that mortals made the Horn of Valere. They certainly weren't gods.

No, the story is NOT a dream. Jeez Marie!

A very strong male channeler bonded to a very weak Aes Sedai could not use the bond to control her. Whoever holds the bond is in charge, though she might have a hard time controlling him.

Everybody fears death because the being that is reborn, while possessing the same soul, will not be the same person. The fear is simple. I will cease to exist. Someone else will exist, bearing my soul. But I will cease. I have met many believers in reincarnation, and most of them seem to fear death just as much as anyone else.

Yes, Elayne, Nynaeve and Egwene could pass the test for Aes Sedai with their current abilities, though Nynaeve might be a little hard pressed. Too much specialization.

And finally, as I have said, I would not change anything in the books except the way that I structured Crossroads of Twilight.

    Interview: Nov 21st, 2009

    Matt Hatch

Ok...which brings up the following questions about the Wheel and its relationship to souls, Talents, abilities and channeling. Is the Wheel responsible for giving or weaving in Talents and abilities to a particular life, or are they like channeling, attached to the soul?

    Brandon Sanderson

That’s an excellent question. I’m going to have to RAFO that...it’s actually more of a MAFO. What you're asking is would someone who is reborn into the Pattern have the same Talents again?

    Matt Hatch

Right. Or does...the Wheel, we obviously know it is very capable of affecting the Pattern, so the question is does it give and take when it comes to abilities and talents it needs?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah, right, I will have to MAFO that.

    Matt Hatch

Ok, so can the Wheel give an individual life the ability to channel, if the soul does not come to that life with an inborn ability to learn or a spark? Can the Wheel give them that?

    Brandon Sanderson

Again, I will have to MAFO this whole thing. I will have to go and look. I don’t know if someone is necessarily always born with the ability to channel, if they are in every Age...

    Matt Hatch

...there is a quote I brought that we asked at DragonCon, Jordan said: “I don't think I have said if you are born with the spark you would have the have the spark again. I have said if you were born with the ability to channel, to learn or with the spark, you will, when your soul is born again, you will have the ability again, whether with the spark or without...” So, in essence he said it’s inherent you have the ability. Whether or not you spark or you can learn it that depends on the life.

    Brandon Sanderson

My instinct knowing how Jim wrote and knowing the parallels in the notes would be that he would parallel the other Talents along the same lines. A Wolfbrother then would always have the ability to become a Wolfbrother and other things along those lines. I’m going off of instinct so that is an asterisked answer. I can MAFO that and look it up and we can see what we can find, but he did like to parallel a lot of these things...

    Matt Hatch

...ok, so at the end of that answer he said this...we were asking a specific question about stilling and burning out...he said, “And neither burning out or stilling affects that except in this lifetime, your current lifetime”. In other words...

    Brandon Sanderson

    ...that is consistent...

    Matt Hatch

...it doesn’t affect your souls ability, your soul’s connection. So stilling and burning out do not affect the ability to channel, which seems to be integral to the soul as it pertains to a new life. That being said, Aran'gar and Osan'gar, they were transmigrated and we see that they can channel in their new bodies, which makes sense because the ability comes with the soul...

    Brandon Sanderson

...and because of that if you were male before and reborn (in a female body)...you are channeling the wrong power...

    Matt Hatch

...exactly...he was transmigrated into a different body, but still channeling the same power the soul inherits. So considering Jordan's statement about stilling and burning out not affecting the channeling ability of the new life of a soul, is the same for the new life of a soul transmigrated?

    Brandon Sanderson

I’m going to say that transmigrated...if you were burned out and transmigrated you would still be burned out, is my guess.

    Matt Hatch

Is that a MAFO question? Or...

    Brandon Sanderson

...that is my guess and you can MAFO it if you want to send it to me, but that is a “I’m pretty sure” answer.

    MARIA SIMONS (VIA LUCKERS)

Yes, you would. Jim said that “neither burning out or stilling affects that except in this lifetime, your current lifetime.” (DragonCon), but transmigration is not really a different lifetime; more than just the soul moves. The new person (I’m at a loss for words here) also has the memories of the previous person, and its personality, and such. So Brandon is correct.

Jim says of Talents: “A Talent is a special ability with the One Power. While the name is used for other things, a Talent is, in truth, something which is inborn in the person and not something that can be learned.” And there is mention of the Wheel throwing out what it needs on occasion, and there’s the phrase, “The Wheel weaves as the Wheel wills.” The Wheel can give and take as it needs.

I believe that the potential for a Talent is there, but it doesn't necessarily manifest each time a soul is born. If the Wheel needs the Talent, the Talent is there. But if the Wheel doesn't need it, it lies dormant.

    Interview: Nov 21st, 2009

    Matt Hatch

Jordan talked about Pattern Level Events, or in other words "Effects of the Wheel". This question was asked of him at DragonCon '05. We wanted to know how Rand showed up in the sky above Falme with Ishamael. Theories... [the recording cut off here so Brandon’s answer to my question was lost. I will paraphrase it generally. I asked him if Rand’s access to the infinite lives while on Dragonmount at the end of The Gathering Storm, was the Wheel getting involved directly.]

    Brandon Sanderson

He replied as follows according to my memory that there was a Pattern Level Event there, but it wasn’t specifically the Wheel giving Rand access to memories [of] his previous lives. Brandon asked for some clarification about how Jordan explained his answer at DragonCon. We were rushed and I could not give him that direct quote, so I was unable to ask more specifically if Rand was seeing the soul’s history of lives lived, or if more generically the Wheel displayed to his mind a series of previous generic lives, like it displayed Rand and Ishamael in the sky above Falme. He did speak briefly about the Wheel not physically “touching” Rand and/or Ishamael, which seemed to be suggestive of his initial response that it didn’t “touch” Rand’s mind to give him access to his own memories. Once again, a more detailed discussion of this subject is worthwhile, especially one recorded.

It was also mentioned that balefire does not mean that someone can't be reborn into the Pattern.

I was very surprised by this and hadn't heard it before, but apparently Brandon has said it in previous Q&As.

Brandon said he was also surprised but that Maria was very insistent about this—so if the Dragon Reborn was balefired, he could still be reborn.

    Interview: Dec 5th, 2009

    Brandon Sanderson

Ability to channel/souls. I think this has all been reported, but he stated definitively that the ability to channel is tied to soul. He stated definitively that the spark was not tied to the soul but could be affected by a specific body (i.e., just because you had the spark in one life, you could be reborn and just have the ability to learn.) He stated with 85% probability that strength in the Power was not tied to soul, meaning that if you were an uber channeler in one body, you could be weak in the Power in your next body.

    tamyrlink ()

Can a person be reborn more than once in the same Age?

    Brandon Sanderson ()

    RAFO.

    Footnote

We know that Birgitte, for example, has been reborn multiple times in the Third Age.

Hope you can answer this one. In the world of the Wheel, would the soul of an animal be reborn as the same animal when that particular Age comes again, like humans are?

    Brandon Sanderson

I don't know of anything specific that Jim said about this, and I've read a lot of the FAQs and interviews. Still, it might be out there hiding somewhere. I'll put this on my things to ask his assistants about so I can know if he did. As far as I understand, the only thing we know about animals and the Wheel is that wolves go to the World of Dreams when they die.

However, looking at the sources Mr. Jordan is drawing from and the overall mythology of the series and world, I'd guess that they are reborn, and as the same animal. There is no talk of a person being reborn as a slug in their next life, and the fact that wolves are proven to have spirits gives subtle indication that other animals do as well. If so, I'd guess they are bound to the Wheel like everything else, and rewoven into the Pattern. What I say, however, is not canon in the same way that what Jim said was. Let me do some more digging to find an answer, if there is one, and ask me again some other time. (And if anyone knows of an interview where he talked about this, feel free to post and point me in the right direction.)

    Interview: Apr, 2001

    Robert Jordan

I liked the explanation of how the different turnings of the Wheel of Time create similar but very different tapestries for the same age—but the Dragon Reborn will always be a male soul (that was the question), just like Birgitte will always be a female soul.

    Interview: 2001

    Thus Spake the Creator (Paraphrased)

Signing Report (Workings of the Wheel)

    Robert Jordan

Female Dragon..NO when a female hero is needed she is one of the ones bound to the Wheel. Jordan did mention a name but I didn't hear it. But he did say the Dragon is never female.

Let's try and clear some of this up... I can't remember the exact question, but from what I read in this thread, it doesn't matter (I haven't read the Female Dragon thread). RJ said that, no, it is not possible to have a female Dragon. If the wheel needs a female Dragon, then it would weave in *insert female Dragon name here*. Probably because of the blank faces he was getting he then added, you can find her in the scene where Mat blows the Horn...

He also said that a soul ready to be reborn cannot change gender, therefor the Dragon is ALWAYS male.

    Footnote

This might actually be two different reports; since we haven't found the original sources for either, we're not sure.

    Interview: 2001

    Thus Spake the Creator (Paraphrased)

    H (Workings of the Wheel)

When a soul is reborn, at what point does it enter the body?

    Robert Jordan

Hmm… *think, think* I’d have to say as a fetus. When the body becomes capable of sustaining life.

    H

*stupid grin* Ok. In The Eye of the World, Thom said that the dead can take over a living body. If this happened, what would happen to the original soul?

    ROBERT JORDAN

*gave me a “haha, nice try you stupid monkey” grin* “Read and find out.”

    H

YAAAAAAAAAAAARG! DAMN YOU! (ok, not really)

    Interview: 2001

    Thus Spake the Creator (Paraphrased)

Mahiro (The Heroes and the Horn)

As I promised, here is a short synopsis of what RJ said at the book signing regarding whether or not Rand is King Aemon Reborn.

    Robert Jordan

For Rand to be Aemon reborn, Rand would have to be the same height as Aemon if Lanfear was correct in The Shadow Rising that Rand is always the same height in each of his lives.

RJ stated that Aemon was 6'1" tall, but when I asked if Lanfear was correct, RJ stated that she was not. Normally this would not say either way if Rand was Aemon.

RJ knew immediately where I was heading (this is one very intelligent man). RJ confirmed that Rand is NOT Aemon. :-(

    MAHIRO

*sighs*. He stated that it was like an author's prerogative to dangle "bait" in front of people and snatch it away. That's cruel and twisted. :-)

This not just torpedoes my theory out of the water, but just nukes it completely.

Thanks to Adrian for letting me use you as a sounding board for my theory.

If anyone wants his exact words, I can post a transcript later.

    Here's what I got...

    MAHIRO

    Mr. Jordan...

    The Creator

    Yeah.

    MAHIRO

How tall was the last king of Manetheren?

    The Creator

    The last king of Manetheren...?

    MAHIRO

    Uh-huh.

    The Creator

    The last king of... Height?

    MAHIRO

    Yes.

    The Creator

Ummm...He'd be about 6'1" [six feet one inch].

    MAHIRO

6'1"? Okay. And was Lanfear correct that Rand is always the same height in each of his lives?

    The Creator

    Ahhh, no.

    MAHIRO

    No... okay. Thank you.

[At this point I turned to leave.]

    The Creator

Rand uhhh, Rand was not the last King of Manetheren.

    MAHIRO

    Thank you.

    The Creator

I very rarely come out and tell you guys something like that. It's much more intriguing to simply dangle a bit of "bait" in front of you and snatch it away. But, ahh no. That's that's that's definitely a "blue sky" direction.

    MAHIRO

Aan'allein, there it is nervous statements and all. You should have been there. "you can... hear him. You can... bathe in his presence...words cannot even begin to describe it. You must experience it to know. You must."

Oops, got a little carried away there... ;-)

    Footnote

If anyone is Aemon reborn, it's Mat, since Mat had memories of being Aemon before he got his memories from the Eelfinn. However, the clues in that case point to the Old Blood and Mat being a descendant of Aemon rather than Aemon reborn.

    Interview: Dec 2nd, 2010

    Mark

So, here's one that—I think this actually might have been yours, Spencer, cause it sounds like almost your mental acumen that would have asked this one—with the exception of Rand, who is Lews Therin Telamon reborn, are there any of the other characters that are reincarnations of prominent historical figures?

    Maria Simons

    There's Birgitte.

    VIRGINIA

Yeah, but apart from Birgitte, yeah. I've always had this sort of fantasy in my mind that Nynaeve might be the reincarnation of Eldrene, the last queen of Manetheren, or something like that. And Mat, you know…gosh, he seems like...before he even left the Two Rivers, the Old Blood was coming out really strongly in him; it makes me wonder if he's not the actual rebirth of some extraordinary battle hero from Mathetheren. [silence]

    MARIA SIMONS

    Um...

    ALAN ROMANCZUK

    Interesting speculation. [laughter]

    VIRGINIA

Which is going to go nowhere!

    MARK

We're not putting answers into their mouths! We're supposed to be getting answers from them, not giving them answers to give back to us! [laughter]

    ALAN ROMANCZUK

    Oh, was that a question?

    VIRGINIA

    Well, sort of!

    ALAN ROMANCZUK

No, you're doing well; keep going. [laughter]

    MARK

He's going to do what he always does; he's going to sit back and listen to all the answers until he finds one that he likes, and he says, "You know what? That was it!" [laughter]

    VIRGINIA

Well, I guess this is something that we're just gonna have to hopefully read and find out...

    MARIA SIMONS

    Yeah...

    VIRGINIA

…or I hope some of these questions are not going to be Brandon has said that Robert Jordan just said that 'this does not get resolved', you know...

    ALAN ROMANCZUK

That would be a shame. [laughter]

    VIRGINIA

I'm not sure where that will leave us. Endlessly speculating till the Wheel stops turning…

    MARIA SIMONS

There's no beginning or ending to the Wheel of Time.

    MARK

Virginia will be reborn again once she passes and she will still be even more into WoT than she was now. [laughter] I can see it.

    VIRGINIA

    Impossible.

    MARK

    I can see it.

    VIRGINIA

    Physically impossible.

    MARK

You'll learn your letters so you can read Robert Jordan in the cradle. [laughter]

    SPENCER POWELL

I think you'll have a huge advantage, cause all the books will be out by then and you'll just be able to read 'em one after the other.

    VIRGINIA

That's right, although I was going to say that I think I have the advantage, I was probably reading Robert Jordan when a couple of you guys were in the cradle.

    SPENCER POWELL

    Yeah, probably.

    ANDREW GELOS

    Yeah, probably.

    MARK

Well, not in the cradle, but I was itty bitty when the first book came out.

    SPENCER POWELL

I think I was still in the cradle.

    MARIA SIMONS

    Wow. I feel old.

    MARK

    Yeah, that's cause he…that's cause you're just…

    SPENCER POWELL

I am twenty. I'm not even twenty yet, so...

    MARIA SIMONS

    Oh my gosh!

    MARK

You weren't even born when the first book came out, buddy.

    JENNIFER LIANG

    Oh, wow.

    VIRGINIA

    There you go.

    JENNIFER LIANG

    Whoa.

    MARIA SIMONS

    Oh, wow.

    VIRGINIA

Yeah, but they still put up with me, and I think I'm older than Cad-swayne. Is that right? Cad-swayne? Cad-swanee?

    MARIA SIMONS

    Cad-swayne!

    VIRGINIA

Oh, yay! Whew. So far I'm...

    SPENCER POWELL

Except that we know that Cadsuane is a couple hundred years old, which, you know, is older than the country.

    JENNIFER LIANG

    Yeah.

    MARIA SIMONS

    Yeah.

    VIRGINIA

Okay, so I'm not quite older than Cadsuane...

    MARK

    You come close.

    VIRGINIA

Yeah, I feel like it. Anyway, enough of that...

    MARK

You're as old as Re-anne. Or is it Re-annie?

    MARIA SIMONS

    Re-AH-nah.

    VIRGINIA

    Re-AH-nah, okay.

    MARK

    Ah.

    SPENCER POWELL

    That's on that list.

    JENNIFER LIANG

Yeah, I've been saying that one wrong the whole time.

    VIRGINIA

In general, are ending Es pronounced in the Wheel of Time names, like Reanne?

    MARIA SIMONS

It varies. He wasn't really…I mean, sometimes yes, and sometimes…I mean, I was thinking about this, because if Cadsuane's final e was pronounced, she would be Cad-soo-ae-nah, like Macarena, and you could do a whole dance. But… [laughter] There doesn't really seem to be a rule. It's just how he felt that day I think, or how it sounded to him.

    VIRGINIA

Some are, and some aren't, you know. It is kind of confusing, but we don't know for sure, if we're even right when we guess that, so you be the arbiter on this one. Unless, as Brandon said in our interview to him, unless Robert Jordan comes down to us in a beam of white light and sets us straight, some of these things may not ever be known for sure, so you have to tell us as best you can. Speaking of names that end in E , two that almost kind of strike me are, um…I started out saying muh-RELL, and then I kind of went to muh-RELL-uh, because of the presumption that the final Es were pronounced, so I don't know for sure which one is right on that; I go back and forth between that.

    MARIA SIMONS

That's interesting. I say my-RELL. I'm not absolutely sure that's the way Jim said it.

    VIRGINIA

Okay, what about lee-AHN, or is it lee-AHN-uh?

    MARIA SIMONS

lee-AHN-uh is correct. That one is Leanne. And Reanne.

    VIRGINIA

    Yay!

    ALAN ROMANCZUK

    I believe that Myrelle…it's my-RELL.

    VIRGINIA

    my-RELL?

    ALAN ROMANCZUK

    my-RELL.

    VIRGINIA

    You pronounce the Y?

    ALAN ROMANCZUK

    Mm-hmm. Like 'my'.

    VIRGINIA

    Okay, good.

    Interview: 2013

    Twitter 2013 (WoT) (Verbatim)

    Joe Satchwell (23 January 2013)

Is Gaidal Cain, Grady's kid, Gadren?

    Brandon Sanderson (23 January 2013)

That's a good theory. Some fans think he would be too old, however. What do you think?

    Footnote

According to RJ's comments on the subject, he is too old; Rand thought he was about four years old in Lord of Chaos, and even if Rand was off, Gaidal can't have been any more than two months old at the time, and was more likely just being born. It stretches credulity that Rand would have mistaken a newborn baby for a four-year-old child.

    Interview: 2013

    Twitter 2013 (WoT) (Verbatim)

    sleepinghour (23 January 2013)

Any chance of Birgitte or Egwene being reborn as one of Melaine's twins?

    Brandon Sanderson (23 January 2013)

I can't remember what RJ has said about when a spirit is linked to a body in WoT terms.

    Terez

    RJ said viability.

    Brandon Sanderson

I thought that's what he had said. So I'd say there is a chance. (But as you can guess, the notes don't say.)

    Interview: Feb 16th, 2013

    Mageen

I have a question about who Gaidal and Birgitte might be reborn as. I was wondering if Gaidal could be the son of an Asha'man and if Birgitte might be reborn as an Aiel?

    Brandon Sanderson

Gaidal definitely could be, and there's a pretty big hint in Towers of Midnight that many folks online have found. As for Birgitte, it's possible.

    Mageen

Do you know who Birgitte is reborn as?

    Brandon Sanderson

    No.

    Mageen

I think a case could be made for Melaine, as the Wise Ones talk about her time being near.

    Brandon Sanderson

In the WoT, a soul becomes tied to the body at viability.

    Mageen

(As noted in the group Q&A per Robert Jordan.)

I think that's pretty much confirmation that Gaidal is Grady's son. I can't decide whether the comment on viability is to direct attention towards Elayne, as she is at that stage of pregnancy, confirmed by that crazy scene. I know in the torchat Brandon said the notes don't say who Melaine's children are, so maybe he's just stating everything he knows. I prefer to think that Elayne's children might be Calian and Shivan and would usher in the end of the current age. I look forward to the encyclopedia, that's for sure!

    AndrewB

Once a person pledges themselves to the Shadow (either voluntarily or involuntarily), are they always reborn as agents of the Dark?

    Brandon Sanderson

BWS first qualified that any answer he will give is as always subject to the caveat that it is subject to a subsequent unearthing of RJ's notes on the subject or an answer that RJ previously gave on the subject. BWS then stated that assuming that a soul was not transmigrated (for example the 'gars [I probably botched the spelling of this word]), then no. That person's soul is a blank slate.

    Interview: Apr, 2013

    Question

Robert Jordan at one point said that Beidomon had been born again and was out and about currently. (I know this was during the time of his Blog, while I was on Wotmania, so it’s been impossible for me to find the actual comment.) I always assumed he was Bayle Domon (B.domon), but that seems almost too blatant to me. IS he Bayle, or is he someone else, completely unimportant? (Wouldn't it be working on his Karmic balance, helping Egeanin/Leilwin to help with the Last Battle, to help make up for what he did previously?)

    Maria Simons

I could only find two quotes where Robert Jordan spoke of Beidomon and his possible appearance in the current age. In the first, he confirmed that Beidomon was not Mordeth, and in the second, when asked if Beidomon was someone in the current Age, he answered "RAFO." I have not yet found anything to indicate who—if anyone—Beidomon is in the current Age, but if we come across it buried in the notes, it will be included in the encyclopedia.
