Predictions Made About: Mat

Rating: 7.5

My prediction is Mat will be the catalyst that helps destroy the currect seanchan culture the way it is now with the slavery and the damane. Egwene and Ms. Shipless will also play a key role in this, but its Mat who will drive the nail home.

While Rand and his select band of channelers (Nynaeve, Narishma, etc.) attempt to seal the bore, Bashere and Itruralde will be the ones to lead the "dragon legion". Mat will follow after Rand. As Rand has his inevitable confrontation with Moridin, Shaidar Haran will attack Rand, trying to distract him or kill him. Mat will then have an epic duel with Shaidar Haran but will be outmatched in the end because of his missing eye (which is covered by a bad ass eye patch like Ingtar's). But just as Shaidar Haran is about to strike Mat down, Rand is triumphant and seals the bore. Yay!

Mat will be at the White Tower when the Seanchan come to attack again. He will have the Horn and his Spear...and his amulet with the one eyed fox(eye is Aes Sedai symbol) and that will make the Seanchan army take him to Tuon.As the Prince of Ravens he will best her( Tuon's POV in TOM states that it is common for the Prince of Ravens to plot against the Empress/wife... and how it is so nice not to have to endure that with Matrim) and his luck will force her to ally with Rand. His amulet, spear, medallion , possession of the Horn and one eyed condition will help correct the wrong that enabled the Seanchan Royals to have to vacate the TOM in Seandar.

Mat's choice of a coat when first going to meet with Elayne will save Caemlyn. Mat, wearing a worn coat, is accompanied by Thom and Talmanes and other unnamed soldiers on the first ride into Caemlyn proper. Talmanes is actually Mat due to Talmanes' polished appearance. Given the Epiclogue, Talmanes will lead the remaining members of the Band to Caemlyn and the mercs in the area will rally to his leadership because some think he is actually Mat. These combined forces will join with the remaining Kin, Guards and armsmen and will hold the Inner City until help arrives.

Mat will lose an eye, either in the Last Battle or in the Tower of Ghenji. I believe this as Egwene Dreams him putting his eye on the scale, and the prediction that he will "give up half the light of the world" in order to save it. I take this to mean that he will lose his eye in order to save the world. I also believe that Mat bears some stark similarities to the Norse god Odin:
-Odin was known as the "Father of Battles" whilst Mat as the "son of battles.
-Both are known gamblers
-Both wear wide brimmed hats and carry spears
-Mat's spear has two ravens on it, Odin had two ravens Huggin and Munnin who each day told him the news of the Earth
-Huggin and Munnin means "thought and memory" in norse wythology, Mat's raven-marked spear is inscribed with "Thought is the arrow of time, memory never fades.
-Both Odin and Mat were hanged upon "Tree's of Life", Odin upon Yggdrasil and Mat Avendesora in order to achieve knowledge
-Odin only had one eye as he sacrificed his eye to gain knowledge of the all time and see how to win ragnarok (nose final battle and end of the world) and I believe that Mat will do something similar.
I believe that the similarities between Mat and Odin exist, although I could be wrong. But this prediction seems to hold true to the prophesies and my percieved ideas of the similarities between Mat and Odin.
Please post any opinions.

Just My two cents but...
Tuon is DOTNM that Mat will marry. As according to senchan tradition he has named her his wife three times all she has to do is name him her husband n their marriage is binding within a year and a day. (ironically this year n a day for marriage is same as gai'shan service time so i wonder wat connections that could bring)

Aldura gives him illuminator secret n mat makes fire arms which are (my guess) wat shock lances where in the age of legends.

I'm agreeing with the norse myth trip bout mat losing his eye. At the tower of ghenji (sp?) he will sacrifice it too bring back moriane who has knowledge on how to beat DO from the finn.

I not only (unfortunatley) think that mat will die at TG but so will Perrin n Rand... but in some sort of cataclysmic event where Mat leads seanchan as either a deathwatch Guard, seeker or genral into pit of doom, Perrin leads the commoners n a wolf pack against darkhounds while Rand leads the surving Asha' Man along with Egwene n Aes Sedai into the pit rite up to the dark one.

Well their just guesses but im dam sure will turn out correct cept for the part bout moriane knowing how to kill DO.

Mat's memories are actually his. Mat is a soul that is continually recycled in the Pattern and it is the memories of his past lives that he now has in his head. Before he visited the snakes and foxes he already had old memories floating into his mind. In the EotW he was speaking Old Tongue before he had the dagger from SL. This continued in TGH. Then in TDR Mat has a full blown memory of the battle for Manetheren in chapter 19, Awakening. This to me is evidence that Mat's soul is recycled. The dagger from SL worked holes in his current life's memories and made room for the A & E to replace them with his old lives memories. I also think that Mat is destined in every life to make it to the Tower of Ghenji in either the flesh or spirit. His soul is connected to the tower because it is he who will eventually master the game.

I think that Karede will catch up to Mat and Tuon and their band, and Tuon will pull off her veil and thus become the Daughter of the Nine Moons instead of High Lady Tuon, and at that exact moment declare Mat her husband, Mat's and Tuon's prophecies will have both come true.

these being Mat has to marry TDOTNM
and the prophecy we technically don't know that one of her damane told her but most likely something along the lines of, "you will marry a man born on the other side of the world, he will remember Hawkwing's face, and carry memories from the Old Blood, and then you will be DOTNM

I certainly hope I'm wrong, but I believe Mat will die by the time the series draws to a close. I'm hoping against hope, but things aren't looking good. Mat is based heavily on Odin of Norse mythology. RJ has already used two ravens (Thought and Memory), had him hanged from a tree for knowledge, and lost an eye (common "half the light of the world" prediction). Odin died in the last battle. Hopefully that will be one things RJ doesn't use.

From what Ive seen I believe this: By Min's viewing, Mat will hear of the Tower of Ghenji, which does in fact exist in the real world, in the Mountains of Mist. He will head home to search for the Tower, finding it, and he will enter and somehow be forced into a gamble in which he will lose one of his eyes(perhaps in a duel with Isam/Luc, or as a payment to the Finn). He will be relying on Courafe to Strengthen, and Iron to Bind. Thom will be using Fire to Blind and Music to Dazzle and will come across Moiraine(who just happened to have let them know when and where they would have to go to the Tower of Ghenji to come save her in her letter to Thom). Mat will marry Tuon, that is obvious. As well as that also by Min's viewing he will be King of Manetheren. I think it unlikely that Mat is anyone specific reborn however, since the only likely candidates are there when he sounds the Horn at Falme.

All three will encounter each other in the additional company of Tuon, et. al., and Mat will lose his prophesied eye saving her from the Gholam. Karede will witness this act and he and Tuon will commence his [Mat's] induction into the Deathwatch Guard, thus fulfilling Egwene's dream of ravens clutching Mat's shoulders so strongly he bled (i.e., the tatoos, which presumably the Guard, as Imperial property, carry in addition to the Seekers.).

What i think "giving up half the light of the world to save the world" means is that Mat will discover firearms.
The evidence for this all his interest in fireworks and in WH the aluminator Aludra asks him if he can figure out what use she'd have for a bellfounder, which is necessary for primitive firearms.
He will use this to "...save the world" but in doing so will have unleashed advanced weaponry on the world thus making it a darker place. Hence "giving up half the light of the world"

Mat will not become a Sohjin (ie the 'ravens' prediction). In ancient norse mythology, Thought and Memory are the names of the two ravens that sit in the tree of knowledge. (Remember what the foxes wrote on his spear about thought and memory???)

Continuing on with the norse mythology metaphor, Odin had to give Thought and Memory his left eye so he could learn the secrets of the universe. I believe Mat will give up his left eye as payment for some kind of knowledge that will allow Rand to win at TG.
