and Will Die

Before Winter's Heart - Archive Only: Rand and the Last Battle

I believe that Rand will meet his end at Tarmon Gaidon. I have several reasons to believe this. First is the recurring line of prophecy which goes something like "his blood shall be spilled on the slopes of Shayol Ghul" (this may not be entirely accurate word for word.) I think this means that Rand will be killed, probably sacrificing himself to defeat the Dark One, and I think it will also be related somehow to the gash in his side inflicted by Ba'alzamon at the conclusion of The Great Hunt. Rand keeps thinking about that particular line of Prophecy whenever that gash comes up. Also the Dragon is supposed to be reborn at the end of each Age, so obviously he has to die before the end of his Age, or at least soon after. Lews Therin died at the end of the Age of Legends, and so I think Rand will die at the end of the Third Age. (This is a fairly hastily cobbled together bunch of evidence to support my theory, so feel free to point out flaws.)

I think that I would respect RJ as an author more if Rand did truly die saving humanity...unless there is some compelling reason that he doesn't have to. But I am not one for the happily ever after, so I think you are right about his incumbent death.

I think we should take care when referring to this quote. After all, blood does not necessarily signal death. The simple fact that Blood will be spilled on the rocks of Shayol Ghul could refer to death certainly (I'm by no means ruling it out), however it could simply be referance to a struggle or fight. We know for a fact that the wound Balzamon gave him splits at the slightest provocation (even when Rand fights his reflections at Tear relatively early on in his inheritance, his old wound tears once more simply due to strain, and it is later stated that he was covered in blood, which naturally would have been spilled onto the surrounding area.) All I'm trying to say is that the prophesised shedding of blood does not necessarily signal a morbid death, as so many people seem to assume :)

I never knew many people assumed that. I thought Rand was the only one who assumed that. I myself believe he's going to die as much as Min believes. The first time I read this Prophecy, I already thought "so, he's going to be wounded. No wonder, when fighting the DO." It could also be just one drip of blood.

And he is reborn at the end of each Age (well, people assume. Was he Tamyrlin at the end of the First Age?), but that doesn't have to mean he has to die at the end of each Age. An Age is far to long to survive until the end. He could live happily with his three women, then die after 400 years. And being reborn the next time the Dragon is needed.
