ne of Six Gholams

by Richard Bailey: 1998-06-12 | Not yet rated

Before Winter's Heart - Archive Only: Who is Shaidar Haran?

Shaidar Haran is not someone who the wheel spun out and then turned to the dark. He is one of the six gholams that were made and(i think) he was released from a stasis box by one of the forsaken after the seals began to weaken. Gholams were created to hunt Aes Sedai and the one power does not affect them. When Shaidar Haran attacks Elayne and the sisters who were looking for the bowl of the winds, Elayne tells Matt that the flows(saidar) just melted around him. Another feature of these killers is the fact that they have no blood and no bones. When Matt stabbed Shaidar no blood was on the knife and the way Shaidar twists and turns indicates that he also has no bones. Shaidar also displays the strength of a gholam by his manhandling of Matt and by tossing him ten feet. This being the case, I believe that S.H. killed Herrid Fel and is controlled by the dark one himself(ie. Hand of the Shadow).

Now that would be any interesting plot, can you prove it was Shaidar Haran who attack Mat, Elayne and the rest? If you could, that would certainly help in creating more theories. Hope to hear back.

Before I posted my theory I believed whole heartedly that the theory was sound. However, upon reinspection I am questioning my ideas. I believe that I may have jumped to conclusions and made some inferrences that are in fact not true. Since only six of the gholam were ever made they were obviously prized possessions. Now, I don't know if the gholam that is currently around was kept in the bore with the DO or if in a stasis box, but his usefulness in spying(squeezing under doors) and assassination could be a reason why the DO would place him high up on the food chain. Haran is obviously a super-myddral with size, speed, and strength characteristics greater than those of the contemporary halfmen. Now, the gholam also has these speed and strength characteristics, but I am not so sure about the size match-ups or their appearance. The ability to not be affected by flows of the one power is one of the gholam's attributes. Shaidar Haran has(supposedly) prevented several forsaken from channeling in his presence, also Haran can feel the difference between saidar and saidin. In one of the wot books it is discussed in detail how Alginor created the gholam and their appearance, I believe that this is one of the sources of my prejudice and I am actively seeking out this reference to determine if I can back up my beliefs. I know that Matt talks about gholam in bk 7 and SH is talked about in bk 6 but the reference that I am looking for is before that(any thoughts?). I feel sort of embarrassed that I placed my thoughts in print before confirming them. However, I believe that in the near future that I can rectify that. Maybe it would be best if you took my theory off of the SH page until I can drum up some evidence in favor or against the theory. I don't want people to get the idea that I am a goofball that just sits at home and spits out cornball ideas. Now I do feel that I have a sound beginning for a theory, there are some comparisons between the two, but the theory as is needs work and research.

This does help a bit in explaining your reasoning, and after what you wrote it does make some more sense, they do appear to have the same types of power. Can a gholam take on a Myrrdraal's shape and appearance? Because we know our Forsaken buddies refer to him as a Myrrdraal. Keep up the investigation, you might have something.

I dont belive that SH is a gholam. First, he resists the one power difrently than a gholam. He removes the ability instead of the flows. Your whole theory is based upon SH being the one who attaced Mat and Elain. That it was him is unprobable, not only becouse of the diffrence in power (resistance). SH dont look like a gholam! And he is of much higer rank than one.

I would like to respond to a posting saying that Shaidar Haran is a Gholam, espescially the Gholam that attacked Mat, Elayne and the others in Ebou Dar. The first reason that this cannot be is that I beleive that Mat would have realized that the Gholam looked like a Myrdraal, espescially an oversized one. Furthermore, there were only six Gholam created, and it has been said that three male in form and three were female in form. Nowhere does it say that one of the three male were Myrdraal shaped. Since they were given specific shape, it goes to reason that they cannot change their shape except to squeeze under doors and the like, always returning to their original shape. I personally believe that Shaidar Haran is Ishy brought back. Due to his uncharictaristic humanesque qualities, I would say that he has a very human soul behind that eyeless face. I have other reasons to support Shaidar Haran as Ishy, but I'll post them later.
