Before Winter's Heart - Archive Only: Miscellaneous Theories

Well this strange object was mentioned way back in the prologue to book 1. It is also the namesake of our most gracious host. I believe that this mysterious object is still in the story today. Let me explain. Shortly after Egwene receives her twisted stone ring she is looking at it in her room with Ny and Elayne, when Lanfear, masked as Else Grinwell, is caught gaping at the object in her hand. Now I've read the books a few times and I've always glazed over this passage, because so much other stuff was going on. But what in the world could cause one of the forsaken to gawk? Not, much. Now why hasn't she taken it, maybe it does some thing completely different for men (no male channeler has ever had it in the books) The only other clue I have to this is that Elayne, the modern day master of ter'angreal, can't copy it exactly. Which means that perhaps it was made by a male and a female in the AoL. this is a really far out theory I think but I don't think that RJ would throw insomething like the Nine Rods of Dominion, and the Ring of the Tamyrlin, and not use them again, especially if he introduces to us a strange ring ter'angreal... BTW I think the one of the 9RoD is in the WT (Siuan used apowerful sa'angreal when she healed Mat, and I think that's one of them) Peace favor your swords.

I like this idea, obviously for now we don't have any more substantial proof...but the quote where Lanfear is gawking does make you wonder that it must be something from the AoL that she recognizes and what more to be surprised at than the Ring of the Tamyrlin...nice Blademaster.

I'd actually been wondering about the Ring & the 9 Rods of Dominion because of a posting (can't remember whose, sorry) about the Oath Rod. If I recollect accurately, the gist was that maybe the rod the Ebou Dari Wise Women swear on is one of the 9 Rods and the different aging effects between them and the AS is related to that.

That started me thinking about the Ring & the 9 Rods, and while i know it was said (on the mailing list?) that RJ ran away from the Tolkein influence, I was thinking about Tolkein's "9 rings and one ring to bind them all." So if the person who sat in the Tamyrlin Seat, wore the Ring, and held the Rods was being given precedence over everyone else this means said person is the Chairman & CEO of the AS, so over what do the Rods give dominion over or "bind"? It seems to supremacy in the Talents is the most likely option.

So we have the Ring for Dreaming, (which makes sense if Te'lar.. is as important as i guess.) Aside from many other details:
(1) other Dreaming Ter.. require channeling & do not allow channeling once there, with ring no problems channeling
2) Tel'. is considered dangerous & important by Wise Ones
3) Most importantly, Verin's comments in TDR about how Tel inhabits all worlds simultaneously, the only thing to do so aside from DO & Creator. ( Blademaster's comment on Lanfear's gaping only emphasizes the importance of the ring)

As to the Rods: If we have the AS Oath Rod & the Ebou Dari WW Rod, thats two, so where are the others? a question here - how much is a pace? a foot or two feet? i ask because the descriptions of all rods i've found so far describe them as either:
1) "thicker than a thumb" & "not quite the length of a forearm"(approx a foot) = Bayle Domon's 2 crystal rods that almost burn down his ship.
2) "one foot long & one inch in diameter" = is for a unknown rod stolen by Liandrin's BAS group
3) one pace in length = was the balefire rod.

If a pace is approx. a foot, all the rods named in the book seem to have the same measurements and seem to relate to a skill in the Power. Has anyone picked up any other Rod references (i actually have not checked out the Ebou Dari Rod reference and did not recall it so i'm going by what was posted) I'm interested in any thoughts.

A small correction that I can't help but point out. Ashe mentions Tolkiens "nine rings and one to bind them all." There were actually nineteen Rings of Power plus one more to bind them all. I can even recite the poem if you would like. Sorry to nitpick, but I hate to see incorrect info.
