An Hour With Harriet

2012-04-30: I had the great pleasure of speaking with Harriet McDougal Rigney about her life. She's an amazing talent and person and it will take you less than an hour to agree.

hy not Vandene

by NCW: 2000-11-21 | 3.5 out of 10 (12 votes)

Previous Categories: Who is the Black Ajah in the Palace?

Just because Vandene is Adelas' sister doesn't mean a thing. Remember TPOD when it is said that Perava family could have been killed by Perava to hide her being Black.

While it is possible, from all of the POV we have with Vandene and the two from Ebou Dar, it seems more likely that it is one of the three they mentioned when talking with Elayne...but, Vandene is a possibility.

I think this is possible. Remember, Adeleas and Vandene would link when going to question Ispan. Wouldn't Vandene have felt her sister die? And who would Adeleas have trusted more than Vandene to bring her tea? Or even allowed to bring tea during questioning? And let's not forget the warded Dragkar earlier in the series, attacking Moiraine at the sister's cottage. And finally, Adeleas was killed fairly quickly and mercifully, compared to Ispan. A method an evil sibling might have used, if she had slipped up questioning a Black sister, while adhering to the 3 Black Oaths, and trying to keep to the 3 true Oaths, in front of someone who knew her well enough to finish her sentences. A sticky situation, that.

I think it's Sarietha, the brown sister in the palace. On page 248 of WH, when Marillin Gemalphin is meeting with Lady Shiaine:

"I wasn't lying about that," Marillin said slowly. "I really wouldn't get ten feet. But there's a woman already in the palace. She can do what you need. It may take some time to make contact, though."

"Just make sure it's not too long a time, Marillin." So one of the sisters in the palace was Black Ajah, was she? She would have to be Aes Sedai.... to do what Shiaine needed.

Then Daved Hanlon enters, announcing his new position as Captain of the Queen's bodyguard, therefore providing an immediate and easy method of contact.

Then, on page 257 of WH, when Nynaeve was "teaching" the Windfinders:

"Sarietha was supposed to be here, not her, but the Brown had slipped out of the palace leaving a note about an urgent errand in the city."

Cirumstantial evidence, but how Jordanesque to put in a wee clue within a few pages of the initial statement.

And Marillin was of the Brown Ajah

Interestiing...I didn't think of that. That is a definite possibility. After all, Vandene is one of the more shady characters, and as an Aes Sedai she would be perfectly capable of pretending ignorance and grief...

Cha Faile: 2005-01-05

I also believe that Vandene is a possibility. I think that using one of the three people already specified would be too obvious.

If it was Vandene , she is obviously BA, but what if both Adeleas AND Vandene were BA....and Adeleas just got the short end of the stick.

I'm still not sure why it couldn't be an outsider, channeling in Salidar is not uncommon ,after all it is a town of Aes Sedai, so could someone have Travelled there and killed her. I can't think of any other way to get past the Warder guads.

Unless the person was Aiel, thus implicating a Wise One...doubtful though...

Adeleas was murdered in a village (can't remember the name), about 5 or 10 days outside of Caemlyn; far from Salidar.

Just a comment, but if Vandene was Black, maybe killed Adelas because the black sister they were questioning (I forgot her name) was one of the three that knew she was black so she had to kill her sister, and thus didn't have to feign grief as was mentioned.

I believe that it is Vandene aswell, all of he evidence can point to her,(the tea, etc.) I also think that her major depression is sinceer, I think that the fact that Vandene is BA came out when questioning Ispan and Vandene had to kill her even though sure truly didnt want to.

I do actually believe that it is Vandene as well. It just seems like the answer that fits everything and it feels right- I always think that you have got to go with an answer that has a good vibe!

Sum Black Eye: 2005-08-03

I am not saying that Vandene is not BA and did not kill her sister, atlhough I have my doubts about that. But if she is BA and it came out during the questioning of Ispan, I don't think that Adelas would have sat there calmly sipping tea if Vandene had just been revealed as BA.

Maybe it went something like this:

"Well, I tried to keep it a secret but yes, I am Black Ajah. But Adelas, let's not let a little thing like that come between us. I'm sure that if we just sit down and discuss it, everything will work out just fine. Here, let me pour a cup of this delicious tea and I am sure you will feel much better about this little philosphical difference of ours. One lump or two?"

JakOShadows: 2005-08-05

Some Black Eye: I don't think she would be that open to it when she's being questioned. I know personality I would feel threatened if two prisoners in a tight situation found out you were BA. In fact, that would be the last person I would want to have the information. So I could see why she would have murdered her sister. The same situation is happening with Faile in the prologue for KoD, but they aren't sisters.

Traveller: 2005-08-06

Oh, well, I got the impression that Sum black eye was being really sarcastic.

OK so there are some problems with the theory, but I really think that unless someone can give me evidence that she isn't, I have high hopes on her. (Yes that is a challenge!)

That was my fualt there. Sorry.

I also agree that vandene may very well be black ajah. I agree with most of the points made in the posts above. also the attack in TGH is very similar to the attack on ispan. She brought moiraine tea buy a few mins before the attack with extra cups incase Lan was present. Im making referance to this because in the attack on ispan there was an extra cup found at the scene. maybe just a coincidence but along with everything else maybe a bit of a clue

Wasn't this answered in KoD? Not sure further debating is needed.
