oes Rand have a sister?

by Tyler Abel: 2001-01-04 | Not yet rated

Previous Categories: Miscellaneous Theories

I noticed that in (LOC, chptr. 53 The Feast of Lights, pg.926) that after everyone in the room at the time (Perrin, Dobraine, Sulin as servant, etc.) sees Rand's sword and belt that Berelain brings in, and they realize that he's been taken, Sulin wails "The Aes Sedai have taken my first-brother!"

Now I am under the impression that a first-brother/sister is either a birth brother, or someone who goes through the ceremony with the wise ones like Aviendha and Elayne did in Winter's Heart. ( Sorry, don't remember page reference for the ceremony.)

This leads me to believe one of 3 things:

1: Sulin is Rand's half-sister. I mean this by thinking that his Mother Shaiel died on Dragonmount after having Rand but his father, (can't remember name) the clan-chief guy could have had a daughter with someone else before he met Shaiel (obviously because Sulin is older than Rand.) This would be so assuming that Rand and Sulin did NOT go through with a similar ceremony as Aviendha and Elayne did, and I am assuming just that. *grin*

2: It could be that Jordan meant to say "Near-brother" instead of "First-brother" with means she just thinks of him as her brother.

or 3: I am just chasing Jak o' the Wisps and there is an explantion I missed in the books, possibly in Aviendha's explanations of Aiel ways to Rand or any of the girls, or in another Aielman's rants.

I could be wrong on this, but it caught my eye. Tell me what you think of it.

I remember this had something to do with Rand's mother...but it has been too long since I have read that part and I can't remember how the relationship works...anyone else have a comment?

Not literal. Maidens treat Rand as a brother or a son, and as a top Maiden, Sulin was one of the closest to him. Just the "Son of a Maiden" thing.

Rand was considered to be a sister of all the maidens, for he was the only one returned to them. Although they knew his parentage, he was considered a natural first-brother.

No, he has a half brother who is galad and his mother was tigraine who ruled in andor until she left for the threefold land. Thankfully, him and elayne are not related closely. Also, luc (slayer) is is uncle because he is tigraines brother.

It is very unlikely she is his real sister. Aiel only consider siblings with the same mother a "First-sibling." I don't remember what the term is if you have the same father. It is possible Sulin is his first-sister, but I think she is about 20 years older then him, so Shaiel wasn't in the waste when she was born. Also, why does it have to be Rand? The Shaido were with the Aes Sedai. Maybe her brother joined them.

oldmanfish has the right of it. Also, as we've seen, you can adopt a first-sibling. It's a very close kinship, as we've seen, and we can see the level of devotion Sulin has for Rand by considering and declaring him her first-brother.

FYI: Siblings with the same mother are first-siblings. With the same father, or their mothers are first-sisters, are second-siblings. It's in the BWB, i believe. Aviendha explained it once as well.

Just a bit of evidence in support of old man fish. When the Aiel women are kicking the hell out of Rand for not telling them he was going to Illian, someone tells him that this is how they would treat a first brother who had dishonoured them.
