at Will Kill Rand

by Underhill: 2002-12-15 | Not yet rated

Previous Categories: Rand and the Last Battle

One of the things that mat is supposed to do in the future is give up half the light of the world to save the world. Since Rand is supposed to be the worlds salvation and destruction, then obviously he's half the light of the world.

After Rand took Verin, Mat, Perrin, and the Sheinarians through the portal stones to Toman Head in "The Great Hunt" Mat said something about betraying Rand in his other lives. I can't remember what he said exactly and I don't have that book on hand at the moment, but I think I can safely say that Mat must have killed or betrayed Rand in other lives.

To make a long story short I think that in Tarmon Gaidon Mat will kill Rand to save the world from him going mad and breaking the world again. He may even give up an eye in the meantime.

Here is the reference you were looking for:

TITLE: Great Hunt
CHAPTER: 37 - What Might Be
"As she started around among the others, stopping briefly by each, Rand went to his friends. When he tried to straighten Mat, Mat jerked and stared at him, then grabbed Rand's coat with both hands. "Rand, I'd never tell anyone about - about you. I wouldn't betray you. You have to believe that!" He looked worse than ever, but Rand thought it was mostly fright."

I can see Mat betray Rand...but I don't know about kill, and I am not sure about Rand being half the light of the world (I guess you could say there are two champions, one of light and one of darkness, and that he makes of the light portion, but it says half the light?)...do you have a specific reason to believe that? Maybe Mat betrays Rand, and Rand is killed as a result...I don't know.

In TGH, when mat says that he won't tell anyone about Rand, he is having a character struggle about the fact that Rand can channel. We all know mat's feelings about the power.

I seem to remember Min or Egwene having a viewing or a dream about Mat giving up the light of the world. One of them sees Mat placing his own eye in a balance scale.

I have always thought this just meant Mat would have to make a choice between keeping his eye and "keeping the world". I can't imagine what kind of situation he'd have to be in to make such a choice but I think that's all. Personally I believe it a little far-fetched to say that Rand's half the light of the world. There just don't seem to be enough references.

I agree with Tamyrlin though, that Mat might betray Rand. Right after that Portal Stones moment, Rand thinks something like; "If Mat's that frantic, he must have seen himself betraying me." Sounds like a foreshadowing to me...

At that time betrayal would be nothing more than letting out the secret that Rand could channel. Mat 'betrayed' Rand in one of his 'mirror' lives. I don't think he will actually betray Rand. His 'betrayal' has already occurred but actually by Perrin with Faile. Mat is not going to kill his best friend. As for the viewing of Mat, the balance scale and Mat's eye I have no clue how that will play out but it will be fun to read.:)

The reference to Mat giving up 'half the light of the world to save the world' is just another reference to him losing his eye. That's why the eye appears on a scale.

Maybe Mat betrays Rand to the Seanchan?

recall that the big issue at the time was rand could channel and mat and perrin had just learned that. mat was a bit freaked out, mat goes to aes sedai, rand gets severd, rand dies miserably, mat watches... id imagine thats how those portal stone trips went. looking at rands none of them came close to the actuall reality that has transgressed, well they prolly did, but those werent memorable or anything.

what i always thought of the veiwing of Mat putting his eye on a scale is him having to give up something as important as his sight for something or comparing to very important things such as his loyalty to Rand and something else like his potential mariage to Tuon. Maybe he will betray Rand to Tuon.
