nd the Killer Is...

Sareitha Tomares.

This theory makes two rather sizeable assumptions, proof for either of which will invalidate the whole. First, RJ is not jerking us around with more red herrings, and second, the reasoning of Kirstian and Zarya is sound.

That being said, let's look at the evidence.

"Worse." Vandene looked around, then moved a few paces to the center of where the hallways crossed, forcing Elayne to follow. From that vantage, they could see anyone coming alongeither corridor. The novices attentively maintained their positions relative to the Green. Maybe they had already gotten that flea, for all their eagerness. There were plenty of servants in sight, but no one approaching, no one close enough to overhear. Vandene lowered her voice anyway. Quietness did nothing to mask her displeasure. "They reasoned out that the killer must be Merilille, Sareitha or Careane. Good thinking

on their part, I suppose, but they shouldn't have been thinking about it in the first place. They should have been kept at their lessons so hard they had no time to think of anything else." Despite the scowl she directed at Kirstian and Zarya, the two overaged novices beamed with delight. There had been a compliment buried in the scolding, and Vandene was sparing of compliments.

Temaile knew exactly her effect on them. She should have hung her head at Eldrith's lecture, fainthearted as it was, and apologized for going against her wishes. Instead, she smiled. That smile never reached her eyes, though, large and dark and much too bright. "You were right, Eldrith. Right that Elayne would come here, and right that Nynaeve would come with her, it seems. They were together, and it is clear they are both in the Palace."

"Yes," Eldrith said, squirming slightly under Temaile's gaze. "Well." And she licked her lips, and shifted her feet, too. "Even so, until we can see how to get at them past all those wilders—"

"They are wilders, Eldrith." Temaile threw herself down in a chair, limbs sprawling carelessly, and her tone hardened. Not enough to seem commanding, but still more than merely firm. "There are only three sisters to trouble us, and we can dispose of them. We can take Nynaeve, and perhaps Elayne in the bargain."

WH, Ch. 10, A Plan Succeeds.

"That's as may be," Marillin said darkly. She cast a sidelong glance at Falion and grimaced. "Now, Moghedien instructed me to offer you what assistance I thought I could give, but I'll tell you right now, I won't enter the Royal Palace. The whole city has too many sisters in it for my taste, but the Palace is stuffed with wilders on top. I wouldn't get ten feet without someone knowing I was there."

Sighing, Shiaine leaned back and crossed her legs, idly kicking a slippered foot. Why did people always think you did not know as much as they? The world was full of fools!

"Moghedien ordered you to obey me, Marillin. I know, because Moridin told me. He did not say so right out, but I think when he snaps his fingers, Moghedien jumps." Talking about the Chosen this way was dangerous, but she had to make matters clear. "Do you want to tell me again what you won't do?"

The narrow-faced Aes Sedai licked her lips, darting another glance at Falion. Did the woman fear she would end up that way? Truth to tell, Shiaine would have traded Falion for a proper lady's maid in a heartbeat. Well, as long as she could retain her other services. Very likely, they both would have to die when this was finished. Shiaine did not like leaving loose ends.

"I wasn't lying about that," Marillin said slowly. "I really wouldn't get ten feet. But there's a woman already in the Palace. She can do what you need. It may take time to make contact, though."

"Just make sure it's not too long a time, Marillin." So. Oneof the sisters in the Palace was Black Ajah, was she? She would have to be Aes Sedai, not just a Darkfriend, to do what Shiaine needed.

WH, Ch. 10, A Plan Succeeds.

Surrounded by the light of saidar, Nynaeve and Talaan faced one another at four paces in front of the fireplace, where a brisk blaze had managed to take all chill out of the air. Or maybe it was effort that had warmed her, Nynaeve thought sourly. This lesson had lasted an hour already, by the ornate clock on the carved mantel. An hour of channeling without rest would warm anyone. Sareitha was supposed to be here, not her, but the Brown had slipped out of the Palace leaving a note about an urgent errand in the city. Careane had refused to take two days in a row, and Vandene still refused to take any, on the ridiculous grounds that teaching Kirstian and Zarya left her no time.

WH, Ch.11, Ideas of Importance.

The next bit of evidence comes from CoT, Ch. 11, Talk of Debts, the last 4 pages of the chapter, 299-302. I'll summarize here. Doilan Mellar, aka Daved Hanlon, a known Darkfriend and the Captain of Elayne's bodyguard, has led a sortie during Elayne's absence to bring in a contingent of soldiers from a High Seat that may or may not support Elayne's bid for the Lion Throne. Elayne, Aviendha and Birgitte all disapprove of the action, for the reasons listed on the cited pages. Sareitha is absolutely bubbling about how heroic and brilliant Mellar's actions were, and defends him against the criticism of Birgitte. When Mellar is dismissed, seething at the public rebuke he receives from Elayne, Sareitha again comes to his defense. Careane and Merilille, both present, highly approve of the action, evincing a strong personal and professional dislike of Mellar on their part.

So what do we have to work with?

1. Two of the Kin, now novices, Kirstian Chalwin and Zarya Alkaese, reason that Merilille, Sareitha or Careane is the killer.

2. Temaile Kinderode states that there are only three sisters in the palace that can hinder their efforts to kidnap Nynaeve and Elayne. However, there are four Aes Sedai in the palace: Vandene, Merilille, Sareitha and Careane. Who would not hinder Black Sisters? Another Black Sister, of course.

3. Marillin Gemalphen tells Lady Shiaine that she herself cannot get into the palace, but that there is a woman already in place who can do what Shiaine wants. Shiaine thinks that it must be an Aes Sedai, a member of the Black Ajah.

4. Sareitha is unexpectedly absent from her lessons with the Windfinders the very next day following Marillin and Shiaine's discussion.

5. Sareitha is the only woman, and Aes Sedai to boot, defending the actions of a womanizer universally despised by all the women he has encountered, actions which endangered the entire city. Mellar is a known darkfriend acting under the orders of Lady Shiaine, as is, presumably, the Black Ajah sister in the palace.

The evidence is all circumstantial, of course, and as I stated at the beginning, utterly dependant upon two assumptions. It all points toward Sareitha Tomares as the killer, however, and unless or until stronger evidence appears which contradicts it, it is the best case that can be made.

I think the only thing missing is her placement at the crime scene. At least we know she has been trying to "mentor" Elayne a bit, possibly control her, so she would have been in the area to be able to do something. So, did she kill Adeleas because the BA was about to name her? That would seem a likely scenario. Nice investigative work. I would nominate you...but awards aren't functional yet :)

I have a strong suspicion that Adeleas was nothing more than collateral damage, Tam. The primary target was Ispan. The scene of the murder has a substantial number of clues, so I suggest people re-read the chapter. I'll raise the primary points here.

"Sympathy looked odd on Nynaeve's face. Clearing her throat, she pointed to the tea leaves without touching them. To white shavings among the matted black leaves. 'This is crimsonthorn root,' she said, trying to sound matter-of-fact and failing. 'It's sweet, so you might miss it in tea unless you know what it is, especially if you take a lot of honey.'

Vandene nodded, never taking her eyes from her sister. 'Adeleas developed a taste for sweet tea in Ebou Dar.'"

The killer knew that Adeleas had recently come to like her tea sweet, and that crimsonthorn would be masked by that sweetness.

"'A little kills pain,' Nynaeve said. 'This much . . . This much kills, but slowly. Even a few sips would be enough.' Taking a deep breath, she added, 'They might have remained conscious for hours. Not able to move, but aware. Either whoever did this didn't want to risk someone coming too soon with an antidote— not that I know one, for a brew this strong—or else they wanted one or the other to know who was killing them.' Elayne gasped at the brutality, but Vandene simply nodded.

'Ispan, I think, since they appear to have taken the most time with her.'The white-haired Green almost seemed to be thinking aloud, working out a puzzle. Cutting a throat took less time than driving a stake through someone's heart...(Ispan's) Lips drawn back in a rictus bared her teeth, and her bulging eyes seemed full of horror. As well they might have, since a wrist-thick wooden stake stood out from between her breasts."

A little kills pain, a great deal kills, period. And yet Ispan was evidently in a great deal of pain as she was slowly killed. So if Ispan was meant to die slowly, and in pain, why crimsonthorn, a pain killer? To incapacitate her guard, Adeleas, with a drug in a delivery device to which she would be susceptible. Cutting a throat is a much quicker means of death, and far less painful, almost as an afterthought to eliminate a witness to whom one is largely indifferent.

"'Adeleas would never have accepted anything to drink from someone she didn't know, not out here with Ispan. Those two facts name her killer, in a way. A Darkfriend, and one of our party. One of us.'"

I also find it highly unlikely that Adeleas would have accepted tea from one of a pair of Kin whom she had only recently met, and whom she was responsible for recently having put into Novice white. There are such things as grudges, and while not necessarily on guard against a killing brew, I don't think Adeleas would have left herself open for a laxative attack.

Kirstian and Zarya would not have been permitted to bring tea to the cottage. Moreover, they would not have known that Adeleas would sweeten her tea to a sufficient degree to mask the sweetness of crimsonthorn. Only someone who was familiar with Aldeas would have known that. I think they are safe to remove from the list of suspects, leaving one of the four Aes Sedai, and I just don't buy into Vandene as the culprit.

Black Sisters are not permitted to live long when captured and exposed, for simple security reasons. Also, their deaths seem to be quite nasty, as an object lesson to others of the price of failure. Witness Amico and Joiya in the Stone of Tear. At the same time, Black Sisters are not casually tossed aside on a whim. They are a valuable resource. If discipline is in order, there are painful and humiliating methods which are not lethal, such as Moghedien's treatment of Liandrin. If Adeleas were the target, why not make her death messy and prolonged? Furthermore, what had she done, or was about to do, that merited death? There is no apparent motive for her death, while there is ample reason for Ispan to be eliminated.

At least, that's my take on it.

Infidel, I had already made the connection using the evidence from Shiaine and the fact that Sareitha was unexpectedly missing from her lessons... COT has only confirmed my suspicions. But well done with the rest.

Graendalboytoy: 2003-02-09

Just for the sake of argument mind you... Your first three points do not confirm that Vandene was not responsible, and 4 and 5 alone are a little circumstantial. Needless to say that Sareitha is still the most likely candidate, just not a no-brainer yet.

Daishan: 2003-03-31

Actually, point 2 does exclude Zarya's other options. It has to be Sareitha;

"There are only three sisters in the palace that can hinder our efforts." At the time, like Infidel said, there were 4 sisters in the palace. A black sister won't hinder a black sister, and since we've established Sareitha is black, the others can't be.

rubbernilly: 2003-06-05

Nice bit of circulus in demanstrando (circular reasoning) there, Daishan:

Sareitha is Black Ajah because we know that the others cannot be black Ajah; we know that the others cannot be Black Ajah because there is only one Black Ajah member in the palace, and we know that Sareitha is Black Ajah... therefore, since sareitha is black ajah, sareitha is black ajah.

There is some new evidence on this I will post momentarily.

I think the support of Hanlon is getting more credit than it deserves. In WOT, just because people are on the same side doesn't mean they like each other, and this is extra true for Darkfriends. I doubt it was "rooting for the home team". In fact, if she was BA, that was a poor move: if one of them is discovered, that would be remembered and thus the two linked. If she had disagreed with him, people wouldn't have taken note as much, and so if one is found out, there is less evidence to find the other. Maybe she actually believed he was right in his actions?

The question of who is black is answered in Knife of Dreams. This is listed as a "Before" theory, so I won't post any spoilers for those who for some reason still haven't read KoD. But it points light at a certain other Aes Sedai.
