hat Happened in Shayol Ghul

I decided to write this in response to "Jain Farstrider was able to channel!"

With the given information it can be assumed that in or before 981 NE Farstrider went deep into the Blight, possibly to Shayol Ghul. What might have motivated him to do that though? It could have been anything. Maybe he wanted one last fight against the Shadow before he became too old. Maybe he just wanted to see if he could get to Shayol Ghul and back. Whatever the reason while he was there something must have happened. Whether he got to Shayol Ghul still remains a question, but it is probable that he was chased out.

For these purposes let's assume that Jain did make it into Shayol Ghul. By 981 Ishamael had probably just begun to break free from his seal meaning there was someone on a high enough level to issue a command that would result in Jain being chased down to Stedding Shaingtai.
First of all, Jain's presence in SG would create such a stir that it would have to reach the top of the ladder. Naturally Ishamael would want Jain either turned to the Dark or dead and would probably do anything to get him in his grasp. One of two things could then have happened. Either he got away or he was made a DF.

1. He got away: This is probably more likely. Jain was chased out of the Blight by someone or something. It was definetly something that would freely enter a Stedding because it chased him all the way down to Shaingtai, the southern most on the Spine of the World. This thing could probably channel since there was no mark on him when he arrived.

2. He was made a DF: Unlikely, but possible. While in the Blight Jain was captured and made a DF. He was informed of the DO's plans and then set about some task. This is unlikely because he obviously had a sickness of some sort that only the sanctity of Stedding could protect him from. Why would someone or thing use such a means to kill him if he was already a DF and why would someone good try to hurt him?

Either way he had to learn about the DO's plans somehow, which still remains a mystery. What do you guys think?

I think Jain was turned, either before or during his time there. I think Ishamael found him through T'A'R and convinced him to travel to Shayol Ghul. I think his mind was played with, possibly giving him some form of memory loss, and he was sent about at the whim of Ishamael.

I prefer the idea that Jain Farstrider was used by Ishamael, but not turned to the shadow - hence the "painted like a fool" - he didn't realise he was being used. Te reason he was so beaten up when he arrived at the stedding (if it was him - I'm not committing myself), but without a mark, was because it was his own will rebelling against whatever compulsion was used on him, and it physically affected him. Therefore, when he was in the stedding, he recovered surprisingly quickly.

I have to wonder if Farstrider's symptoms wouldn't be consistent with having passed through the Ways and been touched by Machin Shin. A Waygate would of course bring him out near a stedding. I hope New Spring will afford some clues about the timing of this event.

I do not think Jain is a Darkfriend. I think that Ishy was more subtle in his plans - when he said 'thinking he was free of me', it suggests that Ishamael allowed Farstrider to think he had escaped on his own, when in fact Ishy had let him get away to suit his own purposes... The illness was most likely intended to fade away with time, leaving him perfectly healthy, but with a spotty enough memory that he didn't work out what was really going on... I can't think of what Ishamael's purpose would have been, though, apart from the more obvious part - telling them about the Eye of the World.

I dont know if this is something that relates exactly to this but it probably does. It's a Quote from TEotW when Rand Talks to Ishameal.

It says, "...'I began the setting of your path the day you were born, a path to lead to your grave, or hear. Aiel allowed to flee and one to live, to speakthe words that would echo downthe years. Jain Farstrider, a hero,' he(Ishy) twisted the word to a sneer, 'whom i painted like a fool and sent to the Ogier thinking he was free of me...'"
