he One Handed Aiel Beggar

by Underhill: 2003-01-25 | Not yet rated

Previous Categories: Miscellaneous

For those of you who are familiar with some of the Norse Mythology theories that are going around, there is one that I read on another site that said that Perrin (who has similar traits to the Wolf Finrir) is going to chop off the hand of Rand (who has similar traits to the God Tyr) to save him from the Seanchan somehow.

Now I realize that that sounds more confusing than it is, but trying to find a better way to explain it is giving me a headache.

This was always one of my favorite theories and I thought for sure it was going to happen, at least I did before Perrin gave up the axe before it could happen. Then something hit me. Perrin just chopped off someone's hand.

Egwene had a dream once of a one handed Aielman in beggar's clothes. She couldn't be sure exactly but she thought it was Rand. But I got to thinking that it didn't really have to be Rand. In order to get the Aiel hostages to talk, Perrin chopped off one of their hands and threatened to chop off more limbs and leave them in a city to beg. I think that the Aiel who's hand he cut off might be the one Egwene saw in her dream. It didn't have to be Rand after all. When she had the dream she couldn't see his face.

Of course it could just be a coincidence and Rand may lose his hand later anyways. But this sure does kind of skrew things up.

I thought there were a few beggar type references, and that is why everyone associated the one you mentioned with Rand. But I see how CoT does disrupt your theory. As I thought about it, I couldn't come up with a good reason why Perrin would chop Rand's hand off. If Rand were collared...then cutting his hand off wouldn't help. Maybe the person Egwene saw was the person in CoT who lost his hand, and because he was Aiel, she thought he looked like Rand?

That's right! There are several references to a severed hand all the way back to Eye of the World. Egwene had her dream, and I always identified it with Rand because Min saw a severed hand and a red hot iron around Rand the day she met him. I don't know, maybe this cutting off of the Aielman's hand is going to have major effect on Perrin's psyhce, and therefore on Rand... or maybe this is a foreshadowing of what will happen in the future to Rand... Someone else had a dream or vision relating to a severed hand. I think it was Min, who saw one floating around Elyane's head. I think that was in TGH.

Sorry, I think Min saw a 'Bloody' Hand (not a severed hand) and red-hot iron. (Ch. 15 Eye of the World, I think). Red-hot iron and bloody hand could both reflect the branding of Herons on Rand's palms, thus this prophecy has come to pass already. However, I'm not sure about later prophecies/visons concerning the hand, whether they are severed or bloody, and whether they occurred after the end of the Great Hunt, when Rand gets the second Heron.

Doesnt Saeric of the Goshien clan have a chopped off right hand. I think he was hired by Rand to teach the Asha'man weaponless fighting.

I think Perrin cutting off the aiels hand is a decoy and I'm thinking Rand is still going to loose a hand somehow.

In EOTW, Shadow's Waiting (Pg 291 paperback) Rand has a dream in Shadar Logoth. "He had no idea what had awakened him from his unpleasant dream. He had been a little boy again, carring Tam's sword and with a cradle strapped to his back, running through empty streets, persued by Mordeth, who shouted that he only wanted his hand."

I'm thinking it ill be Padan Fain/Mordeth who cuts off Rand's hand (or at least tries to).

Just my 2 cents.

It also sets up a possible way for Rand to appear to be in two places at the same time fighting two different battles without needing to use "The Mask Of Mirrors" or some other hard to maintain illusion.

Hmmm... well I've never been able to make up my mind about the meaning of the severed/bloody hands prophecies.

IMO the bloody hand viewing and the heron marks are not connected... due to the fact that there was no mention of blood when Rand go those.

One possibilty is that Rand will have his hand chopped off, by someone, to save his life when a Seanchan make Rand put the adam leach on his wrist. I don't remember which book it was but there was someone that mentioned that the imperial family sometimes had men put on the leach of the adam. Most often nothing happened but sometimes both man and damane screamed till they died violently (bit long since I read it so I can't come with better quote). That and the scenes when Rand touched an adam and when Halima took the adam off Moggy, when compared with those viewings/dreams kinda make sense.

i dont think the seanchan are gonna put an adam leash on rands wrist. if they attach anything to Rand, it'll be the e've (male adam) and itll be around his neck, so you cant really cut it off...

TEOTW, Shadow's Waiting, Chapter 19, Moiraine speaking:

***"The story is too long to tell in full, and too grim, and only fragments are known, even in Tar Valon. How Thorin's son, Caar, came to win Aridhol back to the Second Covenant, and Balwen sat his throne, a withered shell with the light of madness in his eyes, laughing while Mordeth smiled at his side and ordered the deaths of Caar and the embassy as Friends of the Dark. How Prince Caar cam to be called Caar One-Hand...."***

One page later:

***He had no idea what had awakened him from his unpleasant dream. He had been a little boy again, carrying Tam's sword and with a cradle strapped to his back, running through empty streets, pursued by Mordeth, who shouted that he only wanted his hand. And there had been an old man who watched them and cackled with mad laughter the whole time.***

That taken into account, I'd say the dream was only Rand's reaction to what Moiraine had said earlier. Dreams are like that.

I still hold with the theory of Rand being chained to a damane and losing his hand.

Regarding Elayne and a bloody hand- anyone think it could be a reference to the Band of the Red Hand?

Tamin: 2004-08-16

Yeah, I've always thought that one had to do with the Band of the Red Hand. However, I think there is too little evidence on the whole subject of bloody hand/severed hand viewings to put together a really solid theory.
