An Hour With Harriet

2012-04-30: I had the great pleasure of speaking with Harriet McDougal Rigney about her life. She's an amazing talent and person and it will take you less than an hour to agree.

and will win BUT we wont know if he survives!

I think ive found a fact that we can use to determine what is to happen with the wot series.

From AOL Q/A session 1 oct 94

Well, you write that Lews T. ends the Age of Legends, that time repeats itself, and...I would think that Rand would in turn be ending the repeated Age of Legends, but...It doesn't appear to BE a repeated Age of Legends. GA

RJordan2: It doesn't follow that simply because the Age that Lews Therin ended is now called the Age of Legends, that this age which Rand lives in in any way is a repeat of that particular age. What is/was the Age of Legends _will_ repeat eventually, but not until...the Wheel turns considerably further.

RJ states that the Age of Legends will repeat eventually...I guess this means that Rand will reseal the DO and the timecycle will continue. This kills of the Rand will break the wot theory and all theories which states that Rand will defeat the DO once and for all.

Consider this bit of info:

From amazon.com chat 1998

Amazon.com: So will the male-female duality be resolved? Or is this a "read and find-out" question?

Jordan: Read and find out. What I consider the major story lines will be resolved. There will be a number of minor story lines that will not be resolved, for the simple reason that there is no point to any real world where everything is resolved. That's always something that has irritated me about some novels--that you reach a point at the end of the book, and everyone's problems have now been solved, and all of the world's problems have been solved. I get the feeling I could put these characters and this world on a shelf and put a bell jar over them and go away. There's nothing left there alive. That's the way it's going to be. I even intend to set a small hook in the last scene.

A small hook in the last scene?

Since we already know that the DO wont be gone forever it cant be that hes refering to.

I think he will leave us wondering if Rand will survive or not...and never provide us with an definite answer.

You might argue if Rand surviving is a major plot line, but compared to "saving the world" or not, the matter of Rand surviving is not that important.

So if RJ considers Rands survival as a minor plot line, he might well leave us wondering about it.

Well its my theory anyway:-)

oh, and pardon my bad spelling....

You bring up one of the biggest problems, free choice, pre-destination, cyclical lives, reincarnation. Supposedly, history will repeat itself in a very similar manner when the Wheel turns again. This doesn't stop Rand from doing something to usher in the Fourth Age which could be significantly different than the second and third ages. But, as Jordan suggests, we are left to believe from him that the Second Age, the opening of the DO's prison, will occur again. But these characters have to make it happen; while history may repeat itself, it is free choice that destines it to occur. As to the "hook"...doesn't that just bug the hell out of you in a good way, twist you up all inside. Twenty years and thirteen books later, and Jordan is going to do something in the last scene that will have us wondering for years to come, something that will "hook" us. I don't think it has to do with Rand, since we are already told about Rand, the three women, and the boat, after the war is done, but the wars are not over. Moreover, I am sure it will have something to do with Ishamael, and the DO...well, I guess.

ok, very nice. there's something, though, that i was wondering about. It is said that warders are much stronger than normal people and seeing as Rand is triple ( in a way) a warder, won't he be even stronger? then he just might save the world ... personally I have never believed that a mere mortal, no matter, how strong, can defy a god (and that is what DO is, like it or not). so if Rand is stronger, is he strong enough to live through it or not??? and what will happen to Elayne, Aviendha and Min? i suppose, i just rephrased your theory from a different angle, cause I agree- there's no way to know before RJ tells us

RJ says the hook will be put in the last scene, the last scene doesnt have to be the final showdown between Rand and the DO. So i dont think that perticular prophecy is a good argument against it. He could still put Rands survival as a hook after the prophecy has come true....

And so making the hook not only about Rands survival but with how the Ashaman, AS,Seanchan issue will resolve itself....

We probably will know whether Rand survives or not, because, as you mentioned, RJ says he'll wrap up all the major story lines. I think that what happens to Rand will be considered one of the major story lines (duh) and leaving that unresolved would be a bit more than a "small hook".
