I knew it!!! I knew there was a reason I didn't like her!
Haha!
I don't know about you, but here in sweden it's very popular to wear a "palesinian scarf" as they are called here. It started out one or two decades ago, in various degrees symbolizing that you support the palestinian movement (not terrorism) by left-wing people.
In recent years every other young male or female wear them, but nowadays as a piece of clothing/fashion, not as a political statement.
I think a certain FOX news person should chill the f#ck out.

Yup! Definitely worn for fashion in Toronto....

Score: Hate Mongers 1: Corporate America 0
Now, while I am normally no fan of Big Donut, in this case... well yes I am miffed at them for rolling over and empowering the hate and fearmongers who will be that much more likely to scream and rant and fearmonger the next piece of clothing with tassels.
Malkin also referred to the scarf as "hate couture" which just made me shake my head and wonder if the hypocrisy of Faux News has any bounds (to quote a memorable performance).
I have some fashion concerns, though. Timothy McVeigh wore camos when he carried out terrorist bombings. Are those out? Malkin asserted at one point that the tassels on the SCARF were what made it seem keffiyeh-ish. So tassels are terrorsist? Good to know these things....

the squeaky wheel and all that...isn't minority rule great?
First, who the hell is this Ray person? Second, it's a mere traditional garb, worn by almost all men in parts of the Arab world. It's like the bowler hat stereotypically worn by English gentlemen a couple of generations ago, not a symbol of radicalism. The king of Jordan routinely wears the scarf, and he's hardly an Islamic radical.
Now granted, when worn by European people, it singifies either that they're on the left (and like to show everyone that they're on the left) or (probably more likely) that they're trying to annoy their conservative parents.
or (probably more likely) that they're trying to annoy their conservative parents.
I don't know anyone who actually wears it to "offend daddy", wether or not they are supporters of the palestinian movement or not, I don't know either since none are really outspoken political. I think it's just something that's in fashion right now more than anything else.

I agree with Uno...who is this Ray person?
Some observers, including ultra-conservative Fox News commentator Michelle Malkin, were so incensed by the ad that there was even talk of a Dunkin’ Donuts boycott....
...For her part, Malkin was pleased with Dunkin’s response: ‘‘It’s refreshing to see an American company show sensitivity to the concerns of Americans opposed to Islamic jihad and its apologists.’’
Barf...
Ah. Well, when I was in high school, it was definitely worn by people who liked to think of themselves as radicals, but that's admittedly quite some time ago now.

Rachael Ray is a talentless Food Network "celebrity" who made herself famous by her ability to NOT know how to actually cook. She has a bunch of cookbooks for people that are intimidated by actual cooking called "30 min meals" blah blah blah. She has like 75 different shows that spout her stupidity including a morning talk show sponsored by Oprah. She's also an annoying "celebrity" spokesperson for Dunkin Donuts which if you've ever been to New England is considered the best coffee in the world for some odd reason despite it tasting like crap. She is very annoying overall.

First off... Dunkin Donuts should fire her altogether because honestly, she's put on a few since they hired her, and its not great advertising for a donut spokeswoman to be chubby (refreshingly honest, though).
Secondly, she's famous because she's pretty and relatable and there are always these stupid celebs who have their meteoric rise for no reason, and then equally rapid fade into obscurity.
Thirdly... her cooking is a joke. Every recipe is "Do X, Y, and Z, and then throw two sticks of butter into it". I could make dog shit taste like the finest meal at Per Se (a VERY expensive restaurant in NYC) if I put enough fucking butter on it.

I like Alton Brown...and I've made a couple of recipes that she did on the show that were good and only took 30 minutes. This one (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_25754,00.html)was really good, even though it looks like crap in the pic. I just did the steak and gravy though. I REALLY don't understand how ANYONE can watch a cooking show. Period. End of story. I mean, maybe if you're a chronic insomniac, sure....
My mother used to watch Julia Child when she was attempting to be a stay-at-home mom. I was bored to tears even at the age of 5.
I really don't understand why people need these morons anyway. Just get in the kitchen and cook! Experiment! Throw things in a pan and see what happens! Gah!
caladanbrood
05-30-2008, 08:09 AM
Maybe, but some people just need a better structure when they cook - or just use it as a guide to which flavours mix and which don't, that sort of thing.
Incidentally, this story has now found it's way onto the BBC - this Michelle Malkin woman sounds like a complete moron.

I always enjoyed watching the ones that combined cooking with other stuff - british shows so most people won't have even heard of them, but Escape to River Cottage is a good example - the chef moves out of the city and starts a farm, his dishes are made purely from stuff he grows and rears. He did a ten-bird roast once, which it is still my ultimate culinary ambition to replicate.

I think shows like Good Eats, Iron Chef, Throwdown, Dinner: Impossible, and a few others are just FUN to watch. I usually don't watch the regular cooking shows (Barefoot Contessa makes me want to slit my wrists). The ones that come on during the day are total crap.
http://bp0.blogger.com/_6HktozUsfig/RmA2OYSJPgI/AAAAAAAAAbU/4E9v79Rz7HM/s1600/Giada%2BDe%2BLaurentiis%2B6.jpg
As much as I love Giada's rack, I don't care to watch her shows or Rachel Ray's or Paula Deen's. They're just boring and annoying. I don't want to sit there and watch Giada go to these exotic locations that I can't afford, eat great food that I can't afford, and hum and moan about how great the food is that I can't eat.
No thanks.
Entertain me, and maybe I'll learn something in the process.
That's one thing I like about Good Eats. Sometimes Alton does try to be too funny, but I've learned so many tricks and recipes from him that I've saved myself countless hours and dollars in the kitchen. Throwdown's just fun cause I like Bobby Flay. Iron Chef is fun for the competition. Dinner: Impossible is fun sometimes, and sometimes the chef will throw out tips and stuff for certain meals.
Oh, and I love Ace of Cakes. Duff is da bomb.
Personally, Food Network is one of five channels that I watch regularly. The others are USA (Law & Order, Psych, etc), Sci-Fi, Discovery (Mythbusters, etc), Fox (Family Guy, etc).

To each their own - the cooking, while the base of the program, is still overall a minor part. It's enjoyable to watch while you're eating supper, as well as giving ideas for things you can cook later :)

I've never understood why people get all "it's a push-up bra" or "those are so fake" or whatever. Who cares? I'm never going to actually get with Giada, so as long as they look nice from my POV, then who cares how they got that way?
My stepdad is trying to convince my brother and me to open a restaurant. If my brother ever decides to do it, I'll go into business with him, but it's not something I'd take the initiative to do. We're both good at cooking the things we know how to do (which, fortunately, are different things), and we've got our own little recipes that we've made. I think we'd do well. But, again, it's not something I'd want to do on my own.
I still think anyone going into the food industry is nucking futs.

Out of curiosity...why was it horrible?
Terez
05-30-2008, 10:22 AM
Mostly it's horrible because of the hours, and because you're on call generally 24-7. Most restaurant managers have days off where they're technically not supposed to be bothered, but when someone calls you on your day off with something that could affect your business and your paycheck, you can't really ignore it. Another part of it that's horrible is that it's such a meaningless job. What pleasure is there in feeding people, really? Not much...and the smell when you get off work every day is NOT pleasant...
There are a lot of reasons why it sucked, but those are a couple for now. :)

First off... Dunkin Donuts should fire her altogether because honestly, she's put on a few since they hired her, and its not great advertising for a donut spokeswoman to be chubby (refreshingly honest, though).
I think she started gaining weight because she hosts not only her 30 minute show but like a million shows where she travels around and eats a bunch of crap... If I had to eat 10 meals a day on camera and travel in between, I'd baloon up too :)
Secondly, she's famous because she's pretty and relatable and there are always these stupid celebs who have their meteoric rise for no reason, and then equally rapid fade into obscurity.
She, however, has been quite long-lived... my parents have been watching her shows for years. :(
Thirdly... her cooking is a joke. Every recipe is "Do X, Y, and Z, and then throw two sticks of butter into it". I could make dog shit taste like the finest meal at Per Se (a VERY expensive restaurant in NYC) if I put enough fucking butter on it.
Unfortunately, one of the reasons she's popular is because she often focuses her shows on healthier spins on unhealthy comfort foods... if she uses too much of a fatty acid, I'd say its EVOO ;) but overall her average 'recipe' is healthier than many food network celebs... *cough* Emeril *cough* ...
Also, the "cook-by-number" style of recipe is one of the things that catapulted her to the top of the food celebrities so fast... many people like that they can watch her show and easily replicate the dish in a short amount of time because of the Step 1, Step 2, Step 3... Step 500 process.
All of that said... I hate that chick!

It is called "Golden" and it is from a art website (http://www.redbubble.com/) my sister has played around with (and has some art on it).
There are A LOT of really amazing images on that site.

Rachael Ray annoys me also. I love Good Eats and A.B. He's just great and the little history facts they add in are fascinating... He's the reason I watch Iron Chef, too. I think he knows when he's pushing funny to awkward and does it on purpose. Why? I don't know... but I think he gets it.
As for the commercial... What the hell? ~scratches head in bewilderment~

Okay, you know Skippy's List of 213 Things He's Not Allowed To Do In the US Army? Well, Skippy has a website (http://www.skippyslist.com) listing these things. And on this website, he has a blog. And in this blog, he posted this (http://skippyslist.com/2008/06/04/how-rachael-ray-almost-made-me-become-a-terrorist/) about this topic, so let the resurrection begin in the name of laughter!
