The default selection of smiles in vBeulletin is extremely sad.
It might take a while, but if we start nagging now, Tamyrlin might actually get them configured for Christmas. :D
The hardest part of configuring new smilies is finding them. When you link a favorite smiley, show the URL as a link, too.
For starters, the :p smilie is lame and should be replaced with http://smilies.vidahost.com/otn/animals/krakrani.gif ( http://smilies.vidahost.com/otn/animals/krakrani.gif )
Some places to look for old or new favorite smiles:
http://www.clicksmilies.com/
http://mysmilies.com/
http://www.planetsmilies.com/smilies/

Thenice thing about vBulletin is that youcan configure as many smiles as you want to and can have a dozen different winking smiles for flirt, irony, sly, and anything else you can think to represent with a "wink"
For example, I like  but I would also like a bit more variety like:
http://smilies.vidahost.com/contrib/ed/smileeek.gif = http://smilies.vidahost.com/contrib/ed/smileeek.gif
http://smilies.vidahost.com/contrib/tweetz/scared.gif = http://smilies.vidahost.com/contrib/tweetz/scared.gif

Fine, we can change it or add another, but the idea is for YOU to suggest smilie(s) to replace it with.
perhaps:
http://smilies.vidahost.com/contrib/ruinkai/yelcutelaughA.gif = http://smilies.vidahost.com/contrib/ruinkai/yelcutelaughA.gif
http://smilies.vidahost.com/contrib/ed/laugh.gif = http://smilies.vidahost.com/contrib/ed/laugh.gif

Can we steal ezBoard smilies?
Don't know why not, most of the ezBoard smilies original came from sites like those I linked in my original post.
I noticed in another thread that you directly hotlinked the "eyes" smiley from ezBoard and I'm not sure about doing that on a regular basis.
It would be best to find the same or similar smiley on one of the smiley sites and hotlink it from there.
If you find smilies you like, copy the URL to a text file (or local HTML file) that you can keep open in a separate window to C&P from -- i.e. make your own personal smilies collection to use on any forum.
Terez

I'll probably just save them to Photobucket and link them from there. I've started a bookmark folder for the ones I like.

So find some vomit smilies and show us the link.
The idea of this thread is to collect the links so adding them to vBulletin doesn't have to wait on Tam or Jason hunting down smilies to add.
(With IE, Right Click on the smilies you like and select properties to see and copy the URL of the image. Other Browsers have other methods, but most of them start with right clicking for a context menu.)

I think all ezboard smileys look better than the vBulletin ones. The ezboard ones also fit together much better. vBulletin with its eighteen different color smileys don't look that good together imo. Most important though is to get the old "lol" smiley back, I very much miss that one.
Also the big grin :D smiley is ugly and got a totally different feel than the old one, like a smiley for a different emotion. It also reminds me of the "^.^" way of writing that smiley, which I hate.. :D

Don't steal bandwidth. If you like an emote you find in my Photobucket (above link -- 566 emotes plus) then copy it into your own site -- or ask Tam to copy a collection into someplace that TL as a whole will use. People tend to get upset when strangers start pulling images off their websites and use up their bandwidth. Not so bad when it's only one or two people -- but if the 20-30 regular posters at TL suddenly start using the emotes located on someone else's website there will be some angry hosts.

Which is why the one emoticon -- the Rose -- that I copied from another vBulletin forum's custom smiles collection is an attachment and not a hotlink.
The rest of the emoticons in this thread all of mine and all but a couple from other personal collections are hotlinked from Smilie Sites, which exist to provide hosting for hotlinking of smilies.
The whole point fo this thread is to provide sources for smiles we wanted added to Theoryland's custom vBulletin smilies. The intent is to present samples to choose from and then install the best as part of the vBulletin installion.

I really don't like this vBulletin one, :p . This one is just so...pink. The ezBoard one was much better.
We also don't have the famous "Callandor" smilie, lol.

We also need to find out if we can get copies of WOTMania's WOT character icons like: http://www.msu.edu/~mackertm/wotmania/images/moiraine.gif = http://www.msu.edu/~mackertm/wotmania/images/moiraine.gif

Sorry, WH -- I wasn't intending that to look like an accusation -- more of a nudge to people who might not have even considered the problem. One of my other website forums got a nastygram from someplace they had "imported" smileys from without thinking about it.

:D
ETA: On a more serious note, we need a rose icon:

It's useful for sympthy threads or congratulation threads
Hows about this? http://www.hockeyzombie.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif from http://www.hockeyzombie.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif
It goes quite nicely with this one http://www.hockeyzombie.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_mad.giffrom http://www.hockeyzombie.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_mad.gif
And I've always like this one http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a137/fistandantilus01/icon_exclaim.gif from http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a137/fistandantilus01/icon_exclaim.gif (that's my photobucket)

I like that applause icon.
The two from hockyzombies forums look like part of a set -- can you find out where they came from? (linking directly from another forum like that is what Tru was warning about, BTW.)

There is about twenty or thirty icons like that at WotMania and google doesn't turn up any other source for most them. <shrugs>
It does raise a question about smilies, though. What size smiles should Theoryland standardize on? vBulletin's default set and most of WotMania's WOT/Fantasy collection are 16x16 pixels, but many of the ones people have linked here are bigger -- 24x24 or 25x25 pixels -- which work better with higher resolution display settings which weren't very common when the 16x16 smilie sets were first built.
The two attachments are A=22x21 pixels and B=25x23 pixels respectively -- 'A' was copied from wotmania for resizing.
What size range of smiles do people prefer?

Whoa guys. Looks like there is a smiley war going on. Poor Tam is going to be overwhelmed...
As for the size of smileys. It's quite simple, as large as possible that doesn't change the format of the text in the posts. E.g. making the gap between text lines bigger just because there was a smiley in the line above.

By that cirteria, the default 16x16 smiles are too big for the font Tam has configured. :(

Hmm. Well that's too bad then. I guess we have to put up with that gap then. Looking at yuku I see we had a small gap over there as well, but it was very small, a pixel or so. Turning up the text size in your browser eliminates this problem, but the text gets too large for my preference. Especially given the tight and centered board format Tam has set.
I guess it is not a huge problem this, but I definately think it limits the size that smileys can be. IMO they should be matched as close as possible to text size. So they can blend in in the text.

Fair enough. It's a good point, but it does severely restrict the expressiveness of the smiles.
It took me a while to find a post with a smilie embedded within a block of text to check the actual text size vs the smilies size -- a text only line is 14 pixels increaded to 16 by the default smilies and the exact pixel height of taller smilies.
Bigger text is, of course, bigger in relation to the fixed dimensions of the smilies. and doesn't add any thing at all to the line spacing.
Personally, I prefer the size three (12 pt) font because it's easier for old eyes to read than the size 2 (10 pt) font Tam has configured, but not as obnoxious as the 14 pt font Yuku inflicted on me when I tried to even lurk.
