During the shadow raid on Fal dara keep, Rand encountered a fade that smiled as it approached him. That was the second time. Why do the fades keep smiling at Rand? I know women like him, but Rand isn't gay is he? And he left with another lover (Fain) in the end. Or was that another fade entirely?
Apologies again for not quoting. And in case you haven't guessed, this thread is strictly for laughs.
E: I'll post the original scene here as well. Hope it doesn't cause too much confusion.
Then he came to a crossing of corridors, and to his left was the tail end of a fight. Six top-knotted men
lay bleeding and still, and a seventh was dying. The Myrddraal gave its sword an extra twist as it pulled the
blade free of the man's belly, and the soldier screamed as he dropped his sword and fell. The Fade moved with
viperous grace, the serpent illusion heightened by the armor of black, overlapping plates that covered its chest.
It turned, and that pale, eyeless face studied Rand. It started toward him, smiling a bloodless smile, not
hurrying. It had no need to hurry for one man alone.
He felt rooted where he stood; his tongue stuck to the roof of his mouth. The look of the Eyeless is fear.
That was what they said along the Border. His hands shook as he raised his sword. He never even thought of
assuming the void. Light, it just killed seven armed soldiers together. Light, what am I going to do. Light!
Abruptly the Myrddraal stopped, its smile gone.
"This one is mine, Rand." Rand gave a start as Ingtar stepped up beside him, dark and stocky in a yellow
feastday coat, sword held in both hands. Ingtar's dark eyes never left the Fade's face; if the Shienaran felt the
fear of that gaze, he gave no sign. "Try yourself on a Trolloc or two," he said softly, "before you face one of
these.
Clearly, the romance between the fade and Rand was interrupted by Ingtar, a known DF. Also clearly the fade preferred Rand. Much younger.

Rand is everyone's secret dream. That's why Cadsuane keeps slapping him: she knows that she is too old for him, and is annoyed by that. The only one who is immune to his charm is Min, who merely pretends to like him in order to fulfill her role as Mata Hari for the Shadow.

Rand is everyone's secret dream.
Yes, but his tastes are a little strange. I know Leane had the hots for him and Moiraine certainly considered bedding him. Is there any female character that can actually say no? Sorilea's out. She's a little too old.

Well, Egwene did not explicitly say no, but it came to the same thing:
LoC, A Taste of Solitude, Chapter 18
I need ..., Egwene."
Egwene opened her mouth – and realized that she was about to tell him ... . Barely in time she clamped her teeth shut so hard her jaws ached, and opened herself to saidar. The sweet feel of life, so strong it overwhelmed everything else, seemed to help; slowly the urge to talk began to ebb.
He sat back with a sigh, and she stared at him wide-eyed. It was one thing to know he was the strongest ta’verensince Artur Hawkwing, but quite something else to become caught up in it herself. It was all she could do not to hug herself and shiver.
"You won’t tell me," he said.I've left out a few parts which are irrelevant to the current discussion.

As I posted in the other thread, Egwene does stand up for the ladies. And she did well in that particular passage. Rand started shutting his mouth as far back as when they were departing Fal Dara.
BTW, Egwene doesn't really count as a no candidate. She was Rand's first, remember? And at least her tastes (Galad and Gwayn) are not fades:p

Egwene doesn't count because she didn't say no from the start. Same with Berelain. Nynaeve I think is the strongest no candidate. And Cads isn't annoyed with Rand. She's just into S&M.

Nynaeve? Hah!
She could have stayed cosily chatting and drinking tea with the Windfinders, but when Rand offered her a chance to hang out with him, literally jumped at it.

Not to mention all the references made to Rand and Lan becoming more alike. Nynaeve clearly has a type.

Nah Nyn was just following Lan, who indeed was tired of all those women and needed the company of a real man. Note how he goes of to the BLs to sulk when he doesn't get enough attention.

BTW, Is Rand the short for Randy in English? I never thought RJ was a bad boy;)

This is the original love scene I was referring to. The fade clearly prefers Rand to Ingtar, a fellow DF.

Its only the smile that we have as proof that this was a SH prototype. It might not be, since Fain killed it, it may have been Rand's presence that makes a fade smile;)

*gasp* a fade has more interest in Rand in Fal Dara than Intgar? omg NO WAI! He just spent a whole book being chased all over the world by trollocs and fades... and you find it surprising? *rolls eyes*
In my last reread I noticed a couple smiling fades... it was interesting to me to see them steadily get farther and farther from SG.

No.
Terez has an interview quote where RJ says he was surprised ppl never noticed it before.. but fades dont smile... the smile is an indication that its not a normal fade.
Look through her links.
edit: also in the books from fade's creator POV:
Lord Of Chaos
Osan'gar would have thought the Myrddraal's bloodless lips twitched in a smile, except that was impossible, here or anywhere else. Even Trollocs had a sense of humor, if a vile and violent one, but not Myddraal.

Ingtar even advises Rand to try a trolloc or two first before bedding a fade :D
