View Full Version : Stephenie Meyer Accused of Plagiarism

My first thought was, "Who would want to take credit for the trash she writes?!?"

But then I thought, I'd want a cut of that movie money too if I was plagiarized.

Thoughts?

Perhaps all crappy vampire books tend to have similar themes?

‘Twilight’ author accused of plagiarism
'The Nocturne' author Jordan Scott plans to sue Stephenie Meyer

LOS ANGELES - A writer plans to sue “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer, accusing her of plagiarism by lifting passages from an obscure book she wrote called “The Nocturne” and using them in vampire romance "Breaking Dawn," an attorney said on Tuesday.

J. Craig Williams, who represents "“The Nocturne” author Jordan Scott, told Reuters by phone that the passages in question involve few word-for-word similarities but that the two books have similar plot and character points.

Meyer's publisher, Hachette Book Group, called the accusation meritless, saying “The Twilight Saga” is entirely Meyer's creation and that she knew nothing of “The Nocturne.”

“Breaking Dawn,” which came out in 2008, is the fourth book in the series of novels about a teenager, Bella Swan, caught in a forbidden romance with vampire Edward Cullen.

The “Twilight” books, which the publisher says have sold 70 million copies worldwide, are the basis for a movie series from Summit Entertainment. The first film, “Twilight,” has earned more than $380 million at worldwide box offices, and the second, “New Moon,” hits theaters in November.

In “Breaking Dawn,” Bella marries the blood-sucking Cullen and the book follows Bella through a difficult pregnancy and her new life as a vampire.

In a cease-and-desist letter Williams sent to Hachette Book Group, he provided comparisons from the two books of a wedding, a sex-on-the-beach episode and a passage where a human-turned-vampire describes the wrenching change.

As another instance of similarities, Williams pointed out that characters in both books call their wives "love."

Hachette Book Group said in a statement that Meyer's books "have been a phenomenal sensation" and that "it shouldn't be surprising to hear that other people may seek to ride the coattails of such success."

Williams said Scott plans to file a copyright infringement lawsuit against Meyer this week or next in U.S. federal court.

"I think the fans have to read both books and make up their own mind, like a judge is going to have to," Williams said.

He said Scott does not plan to seek monetary damages.

Scott made chapters from “The Nocturne” available online as she was working on the vampire book, which she wrote in her teenage years and released in book form in 2006, Williams said. He said he did not know how many copies the book sold.

I know, right? I hope for their sake they have better evidence than that.

Without the passages to compare there's no way I could possibly form an opinion.

My mistake, Jordan Scott is a she.

I looked up the book and the author on Amazon, but nothing came up. However, the third result was a Girls Gone Wild video, and I would like to know when Amazon started selling porn.

I'd be too ashamed to sue. "I wrote a really shitty book and another author stole passages from my shit to write her own shit because she sucked too bad to right her own shitty book."

Shame shame shame

For the love of all that is fantasy: GET RID OF THIS WORTHLESS CRAP!! This is what happens when crappy romance novels rape good fantasy. Techically Edward is a pedophile. She is a little Emo Chick, and they fall in "love"? He even states that everything about him is developed to make hunting humans better! What the hell, the smug little bastard even SPARKLES! No self respecting vampire sparkles. Most people could defecate a better vampire story than this crap.

As soon as I heard the series was about vampires that weren't really vampires I knew it was trouble. But really, I don't know anyone who reads it, but then, I don't exactly converse with tweeny girls...

Frankly, unless there are verbatim lifted passages from that other book, Scott doesn't have a case.

The Twilight series is such crap that her Evil Highness strongly recommends I don't bother. Frankly, I'll take Joss Whedon's work on Vampires over anyone's with Charlaine Harris coming in second. Angsty, emo stalker vampires hold no interest for me. Prepare for gratuitous hotness:

Matoyak, I have read the books that True Blood is based on. They are much better than Twilight. And they're written for grownups ;) I'd watch True Blood but it violates my policy about watching adaptations of books I like. I am generally opposed and don't except when taking the kids to HP makes them STOP. TALKING. for a couple of hours. The only other time I made a policy exception was for The Firm and I regret it to this day.

They could salvage the entire franchise from irredeemable horrendousness if they replaced every shot of Robert Pattinson with a spliced in clip of Bela Lugosi.

You replace Stephanie Meyer with Joss Whedon.
Kristin Stewart with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Robert Pattinson with David Boreanaz. Add Alyson Hannigan, Eliza Dushku (for Sini, RS and a few others), James Marsters and the priceless Anthony Head and PRESTO! Vampires and a vampire-based show that doesn't suck.

Without those steps, Twilight cannot be salvaged. Period.

Jurrasic ParkJurassic Park was saved by "This is Unix. I know this." after which the little girl typed in the necessary password. Having someone capable of extrapolating from a load of C code* to which specific password one specific user would choose makes it Ultimate Fiction, you know.

* I do hope the little girl referred to the source code with her "I know this." and not merely to the interface.

(Fully accepting that it is a young teenage girl series.)
I'm liking the Inheritence series.

I liked the davinci code and the movie wasn't bad.

As far as this whole plagerism thing... wouldn't someone had said something back in 2008 when the book came out and not 2 years later once it's a big hit?

I also read Stephanie Myers book The Host, for adults. It was a good story, not the best writing and the parasite/host thing reminded me of stargate, but the tokra as opposed to the gou'auld. I did cry at the end. But it's not on the top 5 best books ever list.
