View Full Version : Good thoughts for my little nephew

My nephew, Brock, was born yesterday- 10 lbs 3 oz. He started to seizure right away and can't maintain his breathing. The doctors now say he stroked in utero.

My brother-in-law has just been asked to return to the hospital to speak to the doctors. We are all very afraid and anxious. I don't know how much good thoughts really help- but it helps me to know they are out there.

Thanks.

It's a horrible feeling to be on tenterhooks like this -- you know we all offer you our support, for what it can be worth. Which can be a damn lot, sometimes. Or very little.

I see it's been 10 hours since your post - so whatever the news was, it's already a done deal. I'm sorry you have such a reason for concern. :(

Best wishes going your family's way.

We have heard nothing yet....I don't know if that is good or bad.

(just to explain, the baby and family are in Edmonton, so we can only keep in touch by phone, and we are anxiously waiting for them to phone).

And thanks everyone, for their well wishes. In some inexplicable way it really does help.

I think it is somewhat good, since if things turned bad, they would turn very bad and then there wouldn't be anything to keep them from phoning you.
On the other hand, if he survives until now, then they may be still in a situation of "nothing really new". The longer he survives, the better his chance is, as far as I know.

Of course, this pop psychology and statistical analysis over the Internet has a limited validity, so you do not have any real guarantees.

Good news and bad news:

Bad news: 2 strokes affecting both sides of his brain

Good News: he's breathing on his own and sucking.

Only time will tell the extent of the damage the doctors say.

Thank God for at least a small miracle. The upside that I can think of is that infants/babies have a far greater ability to heal themselves than an adult in the same situation. Maybe the brain will be able to reroute most of the functions initially affected by the strokes.

Definitely a better chance than an adult with a developed brain...

I hope you get more good news

That's my hope too. The fact that his brain has already healed to the point that he can now breath on his own and suck is hopeful.

There aren't a lot of cases, it's fairly rare, and even fewer in medical literature (60 at most). There is a very large difference in outcome. Some kids recover fully, others are severely brain damaged. And they haven't really pinpointed any prognostic factors to predict how any given baby may do. So it is just wait and see.

But for now, we are just thankful that it looks like he will survive.

Thanks again to everyone for your thoughts.
