Mentions Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time, with respect to the notion of what makes works classic or not.

nice link camel, thanks :)
Interesting points in the article.
On the premise that novels predominantly appreciated for style will not last, where as those that are appreciated for their presentation of human ideals might... what authors or books do we think might last?

At least where I'm from, the WoT was frequently in the media and often touted as THE fantasy series, and in the case of some journalists, THE BOOK series of any kind, that people should be reading.
And of course, they always compared it to JRRT

Other than RJ dying....I never once saw WoT in the media in any shape or form.

The internet is a form of media, and just about any forum or website about SF&F authors will list Robert Jordan as one of the top authors to read.

Wow, that's really sad!! I started reading WoT because my mom read an article about it in the paper and got me the books...
also, for the little to nothing that it's worth, Audible.com is marketing the 20 most addictive series of all time, and here's the list (which I've seen in various orders, so I think they're no particular order):
The Wheel of Time Series
The In Death Series
The Chronicles of Narnia
The Andy Carpenter Mysteries
The Dune Chronicles
The Sword of Truth Series
The Hercule Poirot Mysteries
The Saga of Seven Suns
The Tales of the otori
The Vorkosigan Saga
The Thursday Next Series
The Amelia Peabody Series
The Left Behind Series
The Annals of the Former World
The Aubrey-Maturin Series
The Barbara Holloway Novels
The Civil War, A Narrative
The Stephanie Plum Series
The Michael Forsythe Series
The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency

I don't yet consider the internet, or at least, the part that talked about Jordan, mainstream. We're all still on the fringes out here.

Yeah...we're much to wacko to be mainstream...or perhaps too normal to mainstream...
