What a terribly written article. I'm still trying to figure out exactly what they meant.
I like the understatement:
An autopsy, done on both victims at Conemaugh Memorial Hospital, showed that both had ingested relatively large quantities of chlorpheniramine.
then...
Ms. Baum had four times the normal dosage in her system. Mr. Cardy had 30 times the normal dosage, police said.

How awful :(
I can see how easily people wouldn't recognize the dangers of over the counter medicine. And I think they must mean 3 not 30 times the normal limit. I think at 30 times the limit he would have been dead before the hike began.

I'm not too sure Brita...I knew people in HS that would take 24 Geltabs of cough medicine when the doseage was 2...they got "high" off it. That would be 12 times the reccomeended dosage so I think a very high level is possible. 3 times probably wouldn't do anyting to someone who was accostomed to it...just like Matthew Perry could take 30 percocets while 2 would make me loopy.

I know a lot of people abuse cough syrup for the DXM, which is a hallucinogenic (that's the DM in Robitussin DM, btw), but I can't imagine why they would abuse it for any other reason.

It's called robotripping, right? Why would you do it near a cliff? I could see maybe young teenagers not realizing that hallucinating near a remote cliff drop-off might be dangerous, but twenty-somethings?

I can't imagine physically drinking that much cough syrup at once. The stuff tastes awful.

That's the thing, though...the drug that was in their system wasn't DXM - it was a simple boring antihistamine that just makes you really drowsy if you take a lot of it. There's nothing exciting about it at all.
And yes, it's called robotripping, though I always preferred Delsym, which has a higher concentration of DXM and none of that nasty Guaifenesin. ;)
Terez, figured out years ago that stuff eats holes in your brain...

Umm...thanks for the insight T ;)

You're welcome?
Seriously, I don't see why people are trying to get off on an antihistamine. I know some 12-year-olds that are dumb enough to try it, but adults?
And if someone is taking 30x the normal dose, then it's very obvious they were trying to get off on it...

Hence the Darwin label...

Oh, I agree with the Darwin label. But then I would agree with it even if they had actually taken some drugs that serve some recreational purpose...

I know right...if you're gonna do drugs at least do effective ones.
Eh, I find the entire Darwin award concept rather mean-spirited, to tell you the truth. Folly is a normal part of the human condition, and everyone's bound to do some rather stupid things over the course of a lifetime. For some people, folly cuts life short, but that's nothing to gloat over, to my mind.

Maybe they had really, really bad allergies.

Maybe they didn't have any money to buy meth, so they figured downing antihistamines would get them the same thing. Either that, or they had really really bad allergies.;)

Uno...I wouldn't call it gloating but rather observations of natural selection at its finest.

I've known young teenagers that would chop up sudafed and snort it, trying to pretend they had some meth, but never adults. Maybe I don't hang out with the right crowd, though...

~sigh~
I can already imagine having to treat all these idiots who try to do drugs without real drugs. Overdoses on these non-common substitutes can complicate the diagnosis and delay intervention.

Wouldnt it have been a lot cheaper to buy some weed?

Zaela, do you expect sense from teenagers?
Terez

They weren't teenagers, Gonzo. The Darwin people anyway. Teenagers that are experimental with drugs will generally snort/huff/drink anything...which is why I'm glad I had no interest in drugs till I was an adult. :)
