Flood! (http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=21611&l=9a2c4&id=590979604)

We got at least 90mm of rain last night. Several townships have declared emergencies (including mine) and one community has been evacuated. My son was spending the night there at a friends, they are camped at a family members house that is high and dry. I'll be glad to see him, but I can't get to him because of all the road washouts.

There is a level 1 warning for a dam nearby and almost all roads are washed out. Crazy!

We are OK here though- as long as it doesn't rain anymore...

Yikes, Brita! Be safe! And I hope you have enough supplies to wait it out so you won't have to join the masses of the unprepared at the grocery stores!

Can't even get to a grocery store, or corner store, or anything. But we are prepared- we'll be OK :)

Isn't it Bush's fault for not airlifting supplies to you right away?

And here it's been the complete opposite. About 26-30 degrees (80 fahrenheit or so) warm for little over a week now. I can only imagine the rain after this.. Usually not this warm this early in summer for so long.

Here, either. June is usually one of our wetter months. We've had rain, but ten minute sprikles isn't enough to do anything. My poor tomatoes!

First. Take care of yourself, Brita, that looks awful.

Second. The place you live looks beautiful...like areas around here.

Third. As a construction inspector who has been thru this type of thing several times in the last year, be careful driving in those areas where the road is collapsing. The asphalt has enough tensile strength to hold itself up, but wil not be able to hold a load, like a car or truck, and in some cases even you. It may look like only half the road is gone, but the voids could be, and probably are, hidden under the asphalt and as soon as you get out on them they'll fall. I'll dig out a picture I have of my jeep and post it...I fell thru some very innocent looking asphalt and it took 2 tow trucks to get me out. All the rain we were getting was destryoing our roadbeds...we are still fighting it. You wouldn't believe how bad our roads are right now, even when they don't look bad at all.

Four. You use CMP's to cross roads?? Bad news, that is. Concrete is much better. Edit, uh, sorry, CMP= corrugated metal pipe...forgot where I was.

Now the clean up begins. Today is sunny and beautiful- so weird after the dark, crazy weather yesterday.

The roads will probably open tomorrow. In the meantime- my hubby is enjoying a couple of days off.

Some of our pictures got posted on the local news website. If you're interested take a look (http://www.tbtv.com/Pictures.aspx?cid=108486) at the big event.

Sei- ha- concrete culverts, as if we'd ever get that. We live in Northern Ontario we're lucky if the powers that be pave our roads :P

And you are right about the washout under the pavement- you can see in the pictures I just linked that the roads eventually completely collapsed.

It normally is quiet after the storm.

I'm glad things are starting to get back to normal, and that you are all right! :D

91 degrees outside right now (I was just out in it for a bit) or about 15 degrees warmer than normal.

Thanks Spammer and everyone else for your best wishes!

I was quite exciting all-in-all, it will be one of those days we talk about as old-timers :D

That rain must have come in such a short time period, Brita. Like others that have posted, please be safe and take no chances. Seitaer has had plenty of experience with those type washouts in his job. I've not had the road wash out but have seen some collapses. If you remember we had a mess here in March with 13 1/2 inches in less than 24 hours and a total rainfall count by Mid-May that exceeds our normal 12 month total by 2 or 3 inches. Strange things happen though, I had a tough time getting my garden in because of all the rain, and now we've gone a couple of weeks of very hot dry weather without rain. I'm going to have to water my garden this evening to keep it going. Crazy.

As I said before, please be careful and take no chances...

Love and Hugs to all the gang in Canada,

Pops

Here is me driving through the flooded areas of town on 1/10/08. I forgot how much rain we actually got and don't feel like looking through my books to find out...we got a lot though. Can't find the ones of me after I fell through the asphalt...I may have deleted them to save my pride though. I often wonder how much more the little Jeep can take.
