Disclaimer: Anyone who has arachnophobia, I strongly suggest you NOT read this post. Not an educational post per say. Also, I'm not that good at humor, so bear with me as I recount this tale of the previous 30 or so minutes. (Well, by the time I post this, it will have been quite a bit longer, but oh well)

Allow me to tell you a story about EVIL (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EldritchAbomination?from=Main.CosmicHorror). But first, some back story. I have never liked spiders (used to have a minor case of arachnophobia myself, grew out of it and I actually like most spiders now, though I still do not like the ones (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_Recluse_Spider) with (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_black_widow) poison (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazilian_wandering_spider)). There is one spider though that has always held a special hatred for me. That spider is the Grandaddy Longleg Spider (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cellar_spider) (No, not these guys (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvestman), those aren't spiders). My mom can distinctly remember me referring to these bastards as "Satanspiders" when I was knee-high to a grasshopper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locust). I realize that it is an unreasoning hatred/fear, but there ya have it.

Anyways, you're wondering where I'm going with this. About 45 minutes ago now I went to take a shower, and I found 3 of these fuckers lying in wait in my shower. No idea where they came from, they were just there. I promptly killed them dead, and proceeded to check in every place I could think of (including the ceiling,...will get back to that point later). I concluded that there were no more to be seen, and debated whether to skip the shower and go to walmart to get bug poison or not. I decided that this was unreasonable and hopped into the shower.

There I was, minding my own business, when I decided to look up. There about an inch away from my face, was a fucking cellar spider. I just about broke my neck in my freak-out. So I killed it, finished my shower, and got out of there ASAP. The whole time I was twitching more than that crazy paranoid schizo (http://pics.livejournal.com/cheshirecgrin/pic/0001at3k/s320x240) from the Milkman Conspiracy (http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/0/4938/609070-02_super.jpg) level of Psychonauts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychonauts).

It was at this point that I decided the only place that that asshole could have come from was the light in the ceiling. So I decided to find out, asking my parents if we happened to have any bug spray. We did. (Designed for cockroaches, but I figured that if it can kill those things, spiders are no biggie). I unscrew the fog-glass cover, and suddenly a whole fucking SWARM of baby Goddamned daddylonglegs cascades down. I just about died.

Long story short, the fuckers had set up some kind of hive or something in that thrice-damned light, complete with babies, and three egg-sacks. They are dead now, and PETA can fuck off. Bastards got what they had coming to 'em...

Spiders are awesome.

That is all.

Gah!

Some spiders are ok. Itty bitty ones -- or those terribly fragile things I've always called Daddy LongLegs (Honestly, I feel like you can break one by breathing on it).

Cane spiders, jumping spiders, tarantulas and poisonous spiders... ugh.

Terez's avatar spider is cute because it looks like a little businessman spider. Otherwise... not so cute :p

So I feel your frisson of horror, Mato. Urgh.

Well, Mato, all I can say about that is: better you than me. :p

Though to be honest, even though I have arachnophobia, I try not to kill spiders. Instead I chuck them out of the house (using a see through plastic box and a piece of stiff paper to catch and transport them).
I'm not quite sure how I would have handled your situation, since my standard approach would have been rather difficult there.

*shudder*

even though I don't have anything against spiders - well, other than a reasonable fear for my life in case of the poisonous ones - having several of them in the bathroom is simply yucky. Especially with the nest. yuck yuck yuck.

now, big things with teeth - those I'm fricking scared of. Particularly, sharks. Never ever watch National Geographic.

I hate spiders. Small spiders are okay but when they get bigger than a thumbnail, that's not cool. Actually I hate all the small creeps, including stuff that flies. Bees and wasps are the worst.

The only two things I can stand are mosquitoes and ants.

Used to have a big phobia of all that stuff about 10 years ago. Now I'm mostly in control of it but I can still get a little panicky if I get a wasp etc too interested in me :)

Your spider incident would probably have set off some phobia attack in me, I think.

got a tightly controlled arachnophobia myself. usually manage to keep my cool and just kill them. if that situation with the nest in the light happened to me though I'd probably die.

really freaks me out when the bastards sneak up on me:p

Pretty cool how they got in the light!See, if it had been literally ANY OTHER KIND of spider, I wouldn't have freaked like that. I only react that way to those particular ones. If they had been, say, 3 inch-across Banana/Garden spiders I would have been perfectly fine. But those cellar spiders make my brain turn off. Dunno why.

I don't have a problem with spiders, unless they sneak up and surprise me. Then I might squeak a bit, then I am all better. They don't bother me, I don't bother them. If someone in the office is about to kill one, I am the one to get it outside away from the murderers! J/K. Well, I do bring them outside, but I don't get all upset if someone happens to step on one.

With you case, and the entire nest, I would have freaked out, though I would not have gone looking for them.

I came home one evening after a night out with my wife to find this happy little guy in my bedroom.

Facebook Photo Link (http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=3678684&l=fea2b98792&id=658739376)

The pic doesn't really do justice to the size of the thing. Legs included it was at least the size of my hand.

Supposedly if you have these guys around, they outcompete the more dangerous Hobo Spider. I still squashed it with a shoe, because WTF man, I don't want that in my bedroom late at night!

Edit: Stupid FB photo linking...

Unfortunately, there are a lot more poisonous varieties of spiders making their way into the US and establishing here. Brown widows are one of them, so now, if it is brown of any shade, light to dark, or black and it looks like an orb weaver, it is a dead person in and around the house here. :D

I don't freak out too much over spiders any more, since I've had to start working with them more, but the golden orb weavers that take over the local arboretum where I have insect traps out are easily 4 (maybe more) inches across with their legs and give me the willies big-time.

That thing's a spider? Certainly wouldn't have guessed that from looking at it. Figured it was some anthropomorphized rock.

lol - I've always liked that image - I love the way it looks like it has a little smile. I notice that SEVERAL of the Google images show something similar -- something that looks like an expressive mouth. That particular image always just looked like it was sitting at a conference table in an elaborate suit, for some reason.

I am intrigued by the fact that this image (http://bigrab.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/eye-macros-jumping-spider2.jpg) is the same spider, only now it looks like it's frowning. Ah, dangit. Someone photoshopped one of them. If you take the smiling one and vert/horiz flip it, you can see that it's an inverted "mouth" from the frowning one. :( Now it looks like an ANNOYED little businessman spider. Kinda like my boss, come to think...

And well, I was asking my mom about when I picked this up, and it turns out that sometime when I was really young (too young for me to really remember it) I walked into a huge nest-web thing of them. Apparently that kind of stuff sticks with you...

Jumping spiders get a pass...actually all non poisonus spiders get a pass from me, I name mine Mr Bob when I see one on the ceiling. Mr Bob has free reign.

Matoyak
05-20-2010, 07:48 PM
@Yks: Nope, as I really like jumping spiders, wolf spiders, grass spiders, etc. Any non-dangerously poisonous spider is perfectly fine in my book...except for the cellar/basketweaver/grandaddy longleg spider. Those die.

actually all non poisonus spiders get a pass from meExcept that there is no such thing as a nonpoisonous spider. Most spiders venom is not powerful enough to do much damage to a human, but they are ALL venomous.

EDIT: Somewhere I passed the 1000 post mark. Huh.

Terez

There's a difference between venomous and poisonous.

Matoyak
05-20-2010, 08:35 PM
There's a difference between venomous and poisonous. All spiders if they bite you will inject nasty stuff in you. I guess that is venomous rather than poisonous.

I am not certain if any spider is poisonous in the sense that if you eat them, you will get sick. Though I think that point is probably not important. ~shrug~ Doubt all that many people here on TL have Tarantula sandwiches and suchlike.

EDIT: I also am uncertain if any spider has like poison seeping out of its skin (Such as poison dart frogs) or poisonous quills or anything like that. I think they only have the ability to spread their nastyness via bites. So meh. In this case I think most people could figure out what I meant.

I squish cockroaches without a qualm. Spiders I generally ignore, but I also rarely see one larger than my thumbnail. Hmmm - pinkynail, actually. The bigger ones, like cane spiders, tend to stay in the tall grasses. I wonder what we'll call them now that sugar cane isn't grown here anymore.

What scares me are centipedes. http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g7/tworiverswoman/Animals/centipede.jpg
As far as I am concerned, those things are ALIEN. And finding one in your car unexpectedly is a very good excuse for ending up upside down in a ditch by the side of the road.

Terez

It's hard to squish centipedes. They're squishy. It's grosser.

@Not really, that was me being silly, is all. But I am curious as to which ones you consider being in that category. Some people kill Tarantulas cause of it, but others don't, stuff like that.

Oh, and apparently, having looked it up, some spiders are, in fact, poisonous. Tarantulas, for instance, sometimes (?) have some kind of irritant-hairs (Urticulating Hairs) or something. I'm no good at explaining things, so here, have a link: Link! (http://fwd4.me/POe)

From a biological sciences stand-point, venoms are a type of toxin injected (often through the bite or sting) by a living organism, and toxins are poisonous substances produced by the internal biomolecular chemical reactions in living creatures or cells, it can be said that all venoms are poisonous substances. The converse doesn't flow though, as not all poisonous substances are toxins (as not all are produced by living creatures or cells), and not all toxins are venoms, therefore not all poisonous substances are venoms.

However, poisons are defined in different ways based on what you are talking about, legally, chemically, biologically, physically (as in physics, not bodies of matter in the biological sense), so you could probably sit around and argue that all day without setting a starting point for the discussion.

A spider's venom has an LD50 to SOMETHING though, or they wouldn't survive, so it is a poison to something... however, almost everything has an LD50 to something.

I would think that saying "spiders are venomous and some are poisonous to humans" is better than saying that "spiders are venomous, but not all are poisonous" (since all are poisonous to something), especially if you aren't discussing it within a certain frame of reference, such as from the standing of the legal definition of poison, or the biological definition of poisons as something ingested rather than injected, etc.

:D

However, better is also a subjective term without an real concrete definition that I've found for this discussion, even within the reference frame of this board...

Someone get me out of this downward spiral...

Blech.

Am suddenly THRILLED that I don't have a light in my shower. Also, that I have an overactive kitten that likes to eat bugs.

Jumping spiders are worse than the Grand-daddy long legs, imo. They jump. Fast. Which means that if you don't sneak up on them properly (stupid lots of eyes), then they will either a) jump on you, or b) jump away from you. Either is bad. Sit still so I can squish you. Thanks.

Also, Tru? Double blech.

Thanks. That's the beauty of my "see through plastic box" scheme: they are less likely to see it coming, and if they jump a bit too late, they simply bounce off the walls.

The ones with a more than 3 inch wingspan (legspan, all right, but that's not a proper word according to my spell checker) are more of a problem, as they don't fit. Happily there aren't many of them around here.
