Just saw this campaign video for a dude named John, for a senate seat. A texas senate seat. Only in Texas :D

Hmm
lesser states
He can say that?

Mort

Some might not like it, but he should be able to say it. After all, everyone who isn't an Texan isn't voting at all so he have not much to loose when it comes to votes.

That video was a few months old, dunno if the election has already been or if it's coming up. Hopefully he didn't/won't win.
It IS tempting to vote on him when he's riding that horse and playing cowboy and all though. Who could resist all that texaness? :)

How can anyone resist using him for target practise?

Heh that is hysterical. Unfortunately it will also likely result in his re-election. The democrats haven't held a TX Senate seat since the 80's.

...Wow.

Now I'm gonna have Polynesian chorus singing "Big Jooooooooooooooooohn, Big Joooooooooooooohn" stuck in my head all damn day.

Its a pretty standard thing for Texans to feel their state is superior...it doesnt offend me in the slightest. Let them have their delusions. :)

Go Vermont!

Throughout the video they refer to him as Big Bad John, and then at the end like a revelation, he is called Senator John.

So, does "Big Bad" = "Senator"? Are they synonymous?

This would explain a lot about US politics...

In this case, it certainly does. Good God, Im embarassed to have moved here. Everything in this state has lone stars on it. I had to rule out literally half the houses we looked at just because they had lone stars engraved on like, half the stones in the house. At least I don't live in a city that has half of its freeways and buildings named "Bush" though.

Kept Texas in power? The Lord's work? What pathetic pandering. An example of why I would never move to Texas.

Wow, thanks for being so judgmental, Spammer.

We almost bought you a Lone Star paper towel holder for a housewarming present, Ivhon. But we figured you'd never speak to us again.

And y'all, of course it's pandering to the lowest common denominator; but in a state where politics is considered a contact sport and this (http://www.joeydevilla.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2006/12/jan-2007-texas-monthly.jpg) is a cover off our state magazine (or magazine about our state), it kinda seems like it's more tongue in cheek to me. At least it's not a negative ad.

And just to show how little press the other side gets, I'm not even sure who he's running against. And his Co-Senator is a woman.

LOL...thanks for the magazine cover, Gil. That really brightened up my Monday morning.

Are we ever gonna get the laughing smiley back?

Yeah, the Dark Father saw that and wanted to move here immediately. That magazine cover is an example of how much Texans like to make fun of themselves, yet still be prideful. That add was kinda like that magazine cover. Thoroughly, completely sardonic.

This reminds of Charlie Wilson's War. I enjoyed that movie throughly...

If Big Bad John follows in Charlie Wilson's footsteps- who knows, maybe he'll end the Iraq war before anyone realizes he's up to something.

How in the FUCK was that elitist? That was the most rednecked ad I can think of! You have an odd definition of 'elitist.'

That's part of the tongue-in-cheek thing I was referring to. Texans might joke about that, but very few of us take it seriously, except the out and out rednecks.

Do you think the ad would help him? I'm just curious, because I know if a Senator ran something similar in PA, I'd be ticked.

Only in that no one even knows who's running against him. It doesn't matter what he ad he runs, since his opponent is apparently not getting the same air-time, probably due to lack of funds. Why not try to have fun with an ad? I found it funny more than offensive.

Betchya even politically obsessed Sini would have trouble finding the guy running against him, if there even is one.

I'll probably vote against him, no matter who his opponent is, simply because I want the Patriot Act gone and I can't stand any of our incumbents who voted for it. (He's a Republican from Texas, chances are he voted for it, and even if he didn't, he didn't fight it very hard.) But the ad in and of itself is funny, not offensive, and not to be taken seriously. Hell, it's a fricken tall tale right out of Pecos Bill (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pecos_Bill)! The music is even straight out of the crappy county annals.

Sadly I doubt the Patriot Act will ever really go away. Freedom, once surrendered, is very difficult to get back.

I'm sure that your hope will be shattered very early in the next Presidency when your idol reaffirms some version of the Act to maintain security...I'm sure he'll sound sad when he says its a temporary necessity.

Raise your hand if you really think McCain has a shot this November. The sheep are already bleating out their victory dance. Barring a major revelation along the lines of Obama is really a member of Al Qaida, I personally dont see my horse finishing in first. The sheeple have spoken.

There's a blog that I read regularly. Here's a post from awhile back that sums up my views of the McCain campaign.

Don't make me pity you
Something terrible happened today. I was watching pre-primary coverage on TV and I saw some new footage of John McCain at a rally. And it happened. I saw, in his eyes, that he wants to win, and thinks he can win. And I felt sorry for him.

It occurs now and then. A political party team of strategists will decide that it is actually better for the party, long-term, to lose the next election. The heat is on. Everybody and his brother hates the party in office. They need to get out of here and lay low for a while, and figure out the next decade.

You need a man. For such a time, you need a man who is, on the surface at the very least, honorable. You need a man who has shown that he will put party loyalty above his beliefs, if pressed to prove himself. And you need a man who looks sincere--who looks, at moments when he is caught in the camera lights head-on, like a quizzical deer.

Now I am watching him make a speech. The speech is so lame, I can hear the planted audience members starting the applause at each catch phrase, over and above the tiny sprinkle of applause from everyone else, and continuing long after.

Most gruesome of all, he keeps saying "and that's not change we can believe in" over and over, every third or fourth sentence.

No, wait. The most gruesome part is the way he smiles that Joker smile and it cues laughter from the planted audience members. Thuggish, weird laughter. And sometimes the laughter triggers the Joker smile.

Honorable gruesome mention goes to the signs reading "Mac-Attack," a term with all the hollowness of a former Mariner's motto: "Refuse to lose." Sputter sputter, sputt...

This whole over-orchestrated affair seems sad, tired, beside the point. It is clear that the GOP has carefully chosen John McCain as the Republican they most wanted to throw under the bus.

He did indeed vote for the Patriot Act. Voted to keep the provisions in place and extend the wire-tapping provision. He is one of Bush's most loyal allies and (not surprising for a Texas Senator...if anything I would have thought higher) is 6th on the Senatorial list of Big Oil recipients. Pretty much standard neo-con. More war, more "domestic security", anti-gay, anti-choice, pro big-business, etc etc
