View Full Version : Etymology of nicks
Yuri33
06-27-2008, 09:49 AM
Maybe all of you explained this long ago, but I thought it would be interesting to explain the origins behind your nicks. Some of them are obviously references to WOT, but perhaps you could explain why some particular name\character stuck out for you.
My name is not Yuri. That name comes from an old Fed Ex commercial about a Russian couple proud of their Fed Ex employee son. At one point, the mother says "Hey Yuri, don't smoosh packages!" in one of the thickest Russian accents I've ever heard. For some reason I found this absolutely hilarious, so I began using the name for all online purposes.
3 is my lucky number by digit summing (A=1, B=2, etc; sum the characters of your name; sum the digits of the result until you get a one digit number). I've always used 3 as my jersey number and such. 33 comes from that fact that Yuri3 is usually taken when you sign up for something online, and that many places require at least 6 characters for a username. For some reason, Yuri33 is usually not taken, so that name stuck.
Anyways, it's a rather boring explanation, but that's what stuck. I'd love to hear the stories behind your nicks.

I love this idea! :D I've told mine before, in my Nube thread, but here it is again.
My family and I help out at the local farm show every year. They have the usual assortment of quick rides, ballon popper thingys; stuff like that. One morning I was wandering around with some friends after helping some picky old guy unload his prize hogs, and there was this elderly man who had a stand set up. He was a male fortune teller.
The first time I walked by him, I kind of laughed at him, as it was pretty hot out, and he was dressed in layers; in the colorful, cheesy sort of stuff you expect to see a fortune teller in. He had smiled at me, and said I would come and see him before long. I thought, yeah right. Well, you know the whole peer pressure thing. So I went back to his little tent thing.
It cost me two dollars to get this done, and when I paid, he motioned for me to sit down, and hold out my hand. I did. My hands were still a bit stained from the hogs earlier, so I told him right away, "If you tell me I work with my hands, I want my money back."
He smiled, grabbed my hand, then looked at me and said, "You wish to go to Ireland, yes?" That pretty much shocked me. I have always wanted to go to Ireland, but how could he know this? He then said, "You like to read." I smiled at that. "A lot of people do," I said. "AH, but you like Ze Wheel of Time; in fact, you named your fish Rand. He has now passed on."
I gasped at him, unable to speak. Did I have a stalker?
His next guess was dead on once again. "Cinamon toast is your favorite food, with a little bit of melted butter on it as well."
Well now, I was sure the world was going to end soon. Was this guy Jesus or something? When I got up to leave, and he said "Bye Charlie," that just added to the confusion.
I found out two weeks later, after telling everyone I knew about this unbelievable guy, that he was one of my friend's grandfather. I was so mad. I got the guy so much business too, cause I told everyone I knew about him, and they had to find out for themselves.
So, my name. ire for Ireland, ran for Rand, cin for Cinnamon, cpk are my initals, and when I put that as my Yahoo ID, it was already taken, so I added the c at the end. This serves as a constant reminder to be on the lookout for tricksters, which comes in handy here. :D
Now, nobody calls me irerancincpkc, people call me Spammer because Zaela thought I was one at first because of my screen name, and almost deleted my Nube thread when she saw it; I was lucky people had already replied to it. So I am stuck with Spammer! :D

There was a thread (http://theoryland.yuku.com/forum/viewtopic/id/9377), long before my time. Um...I just realized my bookmark worked. I should check all of them!
My name is a real life nick given to me by a close friend after I had a one night stand with Arturo Sandoval...dunno how that came about really because Arturo called me "Teresita" or something, lol...but it stuck. Before I found the net, there were a few close friends that always called me Terez, so it seemed a good online nick to pick, and I use it everywhere.

I wanted to pick something WoT related when I started posted at the main TL site and I thought that something like Amalasian or Stonebow would be good (always been a big fan of False Dragons)...unfortunately both were taken so I went with Davian and it just felt right. 93 is/was my number from organized sports and I picked that because I was a Doug Gilmour fan growing up...thus all my internet names have 93 at the end.

Um, T, really? Like really, really? Dude. FYI, in spanish it is Teresa, and the diminuative is Teresita, so sounds like you got it right.
Ishara is straight out of WoT, and I liked it so that's what I used. It was obscure enough that I didn't feel like a big lame-o, you know? The flirt/ vixen thing is pretty obvious I think. Everything else online is Twinkerbell, a callback to my extreme clumsiness (twinkle toes), and my favourite disney character (cute, with a major attitude).

Weird Harold
06-27-2008, 10:50 AM
Sometime around late spring 1969 I spill a very bright glob of model paint on a pair of white deck shoes. Sinc eit ws the sixties and I didn't want to replace the shoes for just being off-color, I wound up painting a psychedlic spider web patter all over both shoes.
When I explained why I had psyhedelic spdierwebs painted on my shoes to a barracks mate, his response was, "Harold You're Weird."
Since Bill Cosby's comedy routines about his childhood friens were at the peak of their popularity, "Harold, You're Weird" naturally morphed into "Weird Harold" and the name has stuck for 41 years now.

Zaela comes from letters I used from my daughters name (Abby Elizabeth) I was set on using a "z" name but didn't want to use a name from the book. So I took the Z and then added the common "ae" to it that we finshed it off with the letters i had left, lol.

I have several nicknames, but the two that are most popular with me are Bob and Camel.
In 9th grade I moved to a new place and thus started a new school. On the first day on the bus, some people asked me what my name was. I thought I'd be funny and say "Bob", but it never crossed my mind that they'd take me seriously. So the entire bus called me Bob for the next four years. The phenomenon spread, and eventually anyone younger than I referred to me as Bob. I was a quasi-celebrity. At the awards ceremony just before graduation, I went up to accept a scholarship award, and the ENTIRE school goes "BOB! WOOOOOO!" It was kind of crazy, especially considering I was pretty anti-social in high school.
The nickname that you guys know me by is Camel.
People always ask me why I go by Camel (yes, I go by Camel in real life sometimes). It's really a not-very-interesting story, although everyone assumes it's interesting.
It's a two-fold reason:
First, when I moved to Chelsea, nobody knew my name (except the bus people). In my first week in history class, I had to give a presentation on India. In addition to an oral report, we had to include a visual aid. I printed out a picture of a llama and put a picture of Dolly Parton's head on top of it (Dolly Llama, haha). Nobody got it but the teacher, who thought it was hilarious.
Later that day, I was in P.E. class and this guy picked me to be on his team, and he goes "Hey you. Camel guy. You're on my team." and I thought to myself "...camel guy? It was a llama!!" I shrugged and went over to his side of the court. From then on, everyone in my P.E. class called me Camel. That kind of spread throughout the high school as well, and anyone my age or older called me Camel.
The second reason why it stuck with me was that I once saw a camel-hair jacket at the mall, and I thought it was terrible! Somewhere out there, there's a poor, naked camel getting cancer because his fur's not there to protect him from the desert's UV rays! Ahh! So I did a report on that, and that kind of sealed the deal.
I have a few other nicknames, but they're very obscure these days. I drag them out every once in awhile, but 99% of the time I go by Camel.
Oh, and the JSU part is obviously my alma mater. I'm trying to think of a new way to go by Camel without using the JSU, since I really don't give a rat's ass about JSU anymore and I'd like to move on from that.

This book was handed down from my parents to me when I had kids, along with a bunch of others. I never remembered reading it as a kid, but it became one of my favorites as a parent. It's pleasantly odd, just like most of Margaret Wise Brown's stories, and I love the illustrations.
Plus my son loves strawberries.

The story behind my name is simplicity itself: I read something outloud (can't remember what) and my sister who was just walking by my door stopped and asked "What? Nazbaque?" (in Finnish) She said it so fast that I thought she said "What, Nazbaque?" and it stuck on. To this day I use the short version Nazma among friends, as my real name is so common every group seems to have two or more.

Mine was picked because it was easy, and since it wasn't a name, I figured no one else would using it. I had another name that I used first, but it didn't go over so well and I moved on to this one.
My title I got from Firseal(general of the southern border, blah blah) and the DrTA part came from SBX, TL hillbilly is left over from my original name and my location in the world.
1Powerslave
06-27-2008, 08:02 PM
Powerslave is from an Iron Maiden album title, and also a song on that album. I started using it for nicks when playing computer games back in the days. I guess I was 13 - 14 years old. A friend of mine and I was just discovering Iron Maiden, buying a new record every other week at "nice price". He first picked an Iron Maiden nick - The Trooper - for co-op playing through the Doom games. I didn't want to be worse so I also picked an Iron Maiden inspired nick. Powerslave sounded cool so that was the pick. :)
I had to add a "1" cause "Powerslave" was already taken as a global account name at ezboard back in 2001. I also liked the wot reference the "One" ahead of "Power" contributed with.
Dragon Thief
06-27-2008, 09:06 PM
Mine was just a name I cobbled together, though I've tried passing it off as several reasons to make it make sense. Not that I need to, I'm great enough mind you. Shut up voices, no one asked you!
Erm. I actually posted first as ShadowDragon or something similar, but I forgot my password, and went with Dragon Thief. And since the whole animal naming thing I started, I also have several accounts as a variation of something like: DT, DT_Reborn, Ferret Thief, i made a rwiggy@aol.com email addy for a while just for giggles, all sorts of fun.
Most of my names I make anymore I try to keep consistently as possible as MeekBarbarian - such as MeekBarbarian.com! It's a name I earned in D&D from having a barbarian and never ever remembering to use my rage ability.
Could be worse. I was called "Mom" my freshman year of college. A group of us decided that we were going to figure out nicks for each other and never use our real names. I lost out on "Red" because another guy had bright orange hair, whereas mine is more a light auburn anymore. A guy who's last name was McCoy (of the actual fielding McCoys line) was of course dubbed Mac. One guy was ferret (weird, since I was that online, but this guy was a wrestler and a damned fast runner, so he got it), one was woody (guess what he had when he tried to dance with two chicks at once the first party of the year? yep, you'd be right). And I drew the short straw to be the DD our first time out drinking, and I did such a great job "babysitting" that I was dubbed Mom. Mind you, it's hilarious to hear "God Damn It, Mom!" shouted at like 3AM in the dorm when we were pranking each other. Oh, and the last guy was named Guns, cause his intro speech to us in the hippy group meet-n-greet we had to do was "My name is Ryan. I like Guns and ATVs," lol.

Wow, you're not talking about this Arturo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arturo_Sandoval), right? That would be... kinda creepy. :)
Terez
06-28-2008, 03:03 PM
Creepy? Not at all...I was 19 at the time, and he was doing a guest performance thing with my school's wind ensemble, and at the time I was a double major in piano and trumpet, and though I was never really fond of Arturo's classical playing, I loved his jazz. I was wandering around in the auditorium a couple of hours before the performance, and he was in there playing piano (he's an awesome pianist, surprisingly) and I just ended up talking to him, and playing for him (we hung out at the piano for a couple of hours), and after the performance he invited me to hang out with him at the bar. He was buying me drinks, which was super cool for a 19-year-old in the US, lol...and we hung out in the bar for hours, having a great time. We were mock-playing along with the songs on the jukebox (just lip buzzing...I was pretty good at that at the time and so was he of course). The best part was that he was supposed to meet with my band directors at some point after the performance, but instead he was in the bar with me, and I had no idea he was supposed to meet them. Me and the band directors didn't get along at all (something to do with my anti-authority issues), but he dragged me along to meet with them when he realized he forgot, and they were so not happy to see him hanging out with me. :)
He offered me full scholarships to come to his school, but that was just a little much for me...he was even upset when I left to go home afterwards, and he begged me to stay. :D He gave me his phone # and address and all, but I never contacted him...

I don't think it's creepy at all. It's not like I was a minor or anything...and he refused to believe I was that young anyway (I didn't mention my age to him till after a few drinks, lol). I've always looked older than my age, until now.

Well, they were concerned that I would balk at taking medications.
I basically explained to them that my anti-authority issues stem from the fact that most authorities I know are morons and I'm not going to do something just because you tell me to. However, if you're an expert in your field, as these doctors were, I'm going to listen and follow instructions. I might ask questions ("what's this for? why am I still taking this one even though you had me stop taking those? etc).
If my parents say "Don't watch that movie -- because I said so." Screw that.
If a dentist says "You have to have that tooth pulled," then bring it on.

dang, terez, i just love trippin' down memory lane like that. hehe
Reposted from back then, since it hasn't changed in the last 8 years...
Frenzy was my on-air name when i was a dj back in college. i picked it because i'm a huge fan of the classics: greek mythology & plays. It's from The Sisters of the Frenzy, or the Baccante: Women who held wild parties in the forest in praise of the god Dionysis/Baccus. Lots of wine, lots of meat, lots of fun! (that and the dj on right after me called himself Orpheus, and i used to scare the crap outta the little goth, since everyone knows what the Sisters of the Frenzy did to poor little Orpheus...:evil )

I can't call it memory lane, since I wasn't around, but I am glad my bookmarks are restored. :) Though they'll be broken again when Tam imports everything, probably. :(
I think I had recently read Mort by Terry Pratchet when I joined the site. Definetly Discworld related. And that it means Death/Dead in french was just icing on the cake.
I use variations of it on other sites, use LordMort at a few places (some jokingly called me Voldemort a few times).

Which is the profession I'm in. Further, when I was a mere lad of 35 or so, in grad school, I TA ed for an intro course, and one of the bits we did was a history role-play - I did John Snow, and presented the essence of his Royal Academy paper on the South London outbreak (not the Broad Street one, the other one with the three water companies). A friend of mine played William Farr, and grilled me mercilessly on things like miasmas.
Gilshalos Sedai
06-30-2008, 10:05 AM
Gil-shalos is how my name should actually be written. It means ice spear in the Plains' dweller's language in Darwath.
Gillian Patterson was a history professor on our world. She was approached by a wizard named Ingold Inglorion and in a series of odd occurances, was transported to Inglorion's world with another person, Rudy Solis. Inglorion's world was under siege by a species merely called The Dark. Due to the fact that civilization was in tatters due to the rising of the Dark, no one knew how to save the people of the Darwath. Sorcery wasn't getting the job done, swordsmen were useless against the threat since The Dark tended to be invisible.
Gillian Patterson saved her new people by studying. Meticulous research and historical reconstructions saved the people of the Darwath, not magic, not swords. So, I took her name as my own, Gilshalos. Incidentally, I'm a Brown.
And I added the Sedai because a) someone had already had "Gilshalos" as their nick on EzBoard, b) I got tired of being mistaken for a guy.

What happened? I'm relatively new to Facebook and still get scared of having myself out there in the great wide world.
Also, I've been meaning to ask - which WOT fan group on there is the one with you all in? If you anyone is in such a thing of course....who am I kidding?
Oh, and my nick - Figbiscuits are my favourite kind of biscuit :D I have a rubbish imagination and needed something for an ebay name way back when, and a packet of Figbiscuits was the first thing my eyes fell on (which is probably a good thing compared to what it could have been. It lends itself to so many things. For example:

1a. Roman Name (as well as name in games that force me to choose a surname) = Ivhonnicus Rex
2. Im writing a Broadway musical concerning a quirky group of Ivhonnical Dogs - Im thinking I might just name it "Dogs" to keep it simple. I have two blockbuster scores written out already - "Spellings" and "The Magical Mister Muttopoles"
3. My kids will be Minivhons
3a. Which is also what my wife will drive them to soccer practice in
4. Pops was kind enough to remind me that a major work of the English canon was written specifically about me "Ivhonhoe"
I could go on, but that might require a Reading from the Book....

Something funny about Ivhon...well, two things.
1) I always pronounce it "ivAHN" (stress the last syllable). I know ST pronounces it "Ivan" as in, the Terrible. I don't remember what RJ says.
2) Ivhon may be one of the few posters in the history of the Internets to have his name frequently mis-spelled the correct way.

What happened? I'm relatively new to Facebook and still get scared of having myself out there in the great wide world.
About 14 years ago my school bag was stolen when I was in nursing- and that creep must have held onto my ID for the last 14 years because he messaged me on the weekend under a pseudo name (Shotgun Pete), describing my bag perfectly, and general creepy statements. I had my maiden name included in my Facebook name so old friends could find me, so now he knows my married name.
I am hoping he is just a loser with no life, and not a psycho loser.
I suggest you go into your privacy settings and carefully set them how you want them. I have mine locked down now- only friends can see any of my profile, groups I belong to etc. The only people who can find me are friends of friends.
Luckily before this happened my profile was closed to strangers, but anyone was able to search for me.

Well, that's how I had mine set, and I thought that was enough- but who knew a weirdo would keep my ID for 14 years and then search for me...
That's why I have it completely locked down now.
Never had any problem with identity theft or internet stalking etc. On the other hand I've been pretty careful not to put too much stuff on the internet, exception being Facebook probably... have been thinking of shutting it down. But I dunno.
The bank called me today though to ask if I actually did try to access almost 12000 SEK (almost 2000 dollars) with my VISA. I hadn't... My bank was wise enough to guess it was some kind of fraud and locked my card. No transaction kicked in. Phew!

I've never even looked to see what guild wars was. Do I have to buy it or os it free and can someone explain to me what it is? Is it an online game or something akin to a D&D board game? Maybe I should google it so I don't look goofy...and why would that statement make me a candidate to play?

Guild Wars is an online game where all you buy is the game and it's sequels. You don't pay per month. Check out the Guild Wars board for more information. Just saying you might be interested due to your fascination with manginas.

My log-in name was just the first thing I could come up with when I registered at Dragonmount and the box came up for "user name?" -- I went, "uhhh....." and eventually put in "tworiverswoman" because I was brand-spankin' new to the internet (truly -- I'd never been on a forum before) and didn't even know I could have spaces in my name.
The nickname "Tru" is just a pronounceable version of TRW, which I gradually came to dislike -- especially after someone mangled it with TWW. "Two wivers woman" anyone? Elmer Fudd LIVES!
Firseal persists in calling me Toriwo, which I like to look at but not to hear, because it sounds WEIRD.

At first my name was DruidSavior, but then the management of the site changed to some company, and I quit going on it for awhile. I forgot my password, so I picked another class and added the Savior at the end. People call me RS for obvious reasons. IRL I was named after the greatest individual conqueror in history...

My nickname is an anagram created for me by a friend who either can't spell or just didn't like the look of it with the correct letter in it. It stands for The All Knowing and Wise Wench, but I think we can agree that Tanaww looks and sounds better than Takaww. I prefer it shortened to Tana for casual use and, on good days, B and RS can call me "Mama" ;) But only on good days.
Bad Tanaww. An anagram is a word or phrase made up buy re-arranging the letters in another word or phrase. (ie, Ethan Rom = Other Man).
What you have is an Acronym - a shorthanded version of a phrase (often by using the first letters of each of a series of words) read in its own right as a word.
Not to be confused with an abbreviation, which is a shorthanded version of a word/phrase that is not made of the first letters of each of a series of words, or if it is it is read as those letters (and not as a word).
For example, HTML is read as AYCH-TEE-EM-ELL, no hittmull. So it's an abbreviation.
Doc is an abbreviation for doctor - it's read as a word, but doesn't consist of the first letters of a series of words.
Tanaww is an acronym, because each of the letters in Tanaww (supposedly) stand for a real word - like "nowing".
And now to be mean and throw you some screwballs -
PERL is a Backronym (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backronym) - it's name was Perl first, and then someone made it into an "acronym" after the fact.
And, of course, today is full of contrived acronyms (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contrived_acronym#Contrived_acronyms) - people who purposely make an acronym fit the word they want, instead of making an acronym from a phrase they already have.
That is all, class. Carry on.

An abbreviation makes things shorter, DT, so changing a letter doesn't abbreviate anything. Stack?
Heh...CCSD sounds like some kind of pseudo-government agency that's responsible for litter control or advising the mayor on hiking trails or something.
"Hi, I'm Steve with the CCSD. I'm here today to talk about purple loosestrife..."
"Cause I are genius."
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it "Cause I am genius"?
The only rule "are" have that I know of is that it needs to be a plural object/subject for it to be used, like "We are..." etc.
Are you telling me there are more uses of "are" or that you are a liar and aren't actually a master of the english language? :)

We have all kinds of messed up stuff in the english language. Especially in the south. Try these on for size.
I'm fixing to carry the kids to town, but I'll be there directly.
I reckon y'all can carry that upstairs and then y'uns can carry the dog over yonder to the vet.
He's fixing to tell y'all how the cow eats cabbage.
Y'all come back when ya ain't gotta stay so long.
He run up under it and it flung him out like a dust devil in a fit.
Don't yap at him, he's ill as a hornet.
Now, remember these are written so they are much easier to understand. Some people I know are so mush mouthed, I have to listen really closely to understand what they are saying. Here, I'll try and do the last one phonetically so you can see what I mean:
Don chapat em, he z'ill aza harnet.
Of course, this same statement will sound a little different in all of the southern states. And without the inflection it's hard to make it right. In Arkansas, for instance, it would be more like this:
donchya yappit im, he'saz ill asa hornet.
The fastest way to learn the wrong way to speak english is to come and hang in the south for a while.

Speaking of - nothing was funnier than me (slight redneck accent), Moonie (more pronounced, quite goofy accent), my wife (much less of an accent, at least to my ears) and Uno (roughly British sounding accent) talking at a restaurant when we hung out with them for their wedding, in Mobile AL.
And for worst habits of the south - the damned redlights. I swear the things stay red for like over 5 minutes, up here (up, being relative, of course) they're on like a 90second timer or so for most lights.
