View Full Version : I'm blind

So I was rubbing my eyes just now cause I just woke up, and one of my contacts went flying somewhere. Not good, cause I'm on my last pair. I couldn't find it, so I got out one of my mom's disposables that she donated when she had lasik surgery, but it's 3.75 where I need 4.75 or something. So everything's all weird-looking. Not exactly fuzzy, but it's like I'm cross-eyed.
And my financial aid for school doesn't come in till Friday, so I'm stuck being blind till then and maybe later cause that's a holiday (might have to wait till Monday), and I have to drive up to Hattiesburg (an hour north of here) to get my refund check then. I could probably get my stepmom to drive me but I can't stand her company so I think I'll risk driving blind instead.

1) Get an eye patch.
2) Relish cool look of having an eye patch.
3) Go to your optician and ask for a new pair.
If you've bought the contacts in a store and not on the net you should be able to get a new one for the lost one. They should cover that. Or say that you need a slight change in power and they should give you a new pair.

The problem with Strong's idea would probably be that they don't have all types of contacts in stock at any time. They have to order them from their HQ.

I think Sare may be blind too...

hehe...and they won't give me a free one. Last time I went to the eye doctor, he was upset cause I hadn't been to see him in years, and he charged me a new patient fee even though I've been going to him since I was a kid, and my whole family still goes to him. Bastard.

Is it better to have the disposables than none at all?
Terez

Well, I always use disposables, but my mom's aren't the right prescription...

I can just imagine the headache you've got, too. Your prescription is low enough that your optometrist should have it in stock. (Unlike mine, which is a -10. Good luck finding THOSE in a sample.) Wouldn't hurt to ask. Or heck, if they're in, they might just give you a couple to tide you over. ;)

Holy CRAP Gil I thought my brother's eyes were bad (he's in the 8-9 range). Jeez.

Yeah, or else I'd just take the contact out. But it's still not good...

Weird...I always thought when you got contacts, you had a backup pair of glasses for emergencies. My brother always did, and so did friends of mine.
Or is it that you can't find your glasses because you're blind?

Most people have a pair of glasses as a back up. Or should I say I do and therefore everyone should.

I didn't, until this year. The previous pair of back ups were an outdated prescription and broken. For most of us who REALLY can't see, glasses are a bad idea since they encourage your eyes to get lazier and get worse. (At least that's what my eye doctor said.) I can really only wear my glasses for two hours a day just so my corneas can breathe.
Terez might have the same issue.

I have a pair of my mom's old glasses. I've never bothered with buying a pair because they're so expensive and I hardly ever need them. Mom's old glasses are an even older prescription than the contacts she donated, but at least they're balanced...

Been there before...that sucks T.
~sympathy headache~:(
I had about -6 before I had Lasik surgery. Seeing just fine now. Money well spent (a lot of it too).

I can't have lasik surgery because my vision deterioration hasn't plateaued yet...

Gil, I think your doc is crazy. The reason people see better with Contacts is the lack of distance / distortion between the lens correcting your vision and your eye. I, for one, see a lot better with contacts and reading glasses than I do with my damn bifocals but I still have my glasses for when I just want a break.

I tend not to take a break from the contacts unless there's actually something wrong with my eye...

Doubt he's crazy, Tanaww. And my eyes do get lazier and get worse with glasses. For instance, I need to be corrected for an astigmatism in glasses but not in contacts.
But you need to let your eyes breathe for a least a couple hours a day.

My contacts claim to let my eyes breathe.

Mine do, too. But my previous pair didn't. My cornea was apparently trying to grow from out behind them just to get air because I wasn't wearing my glasses enough.

Yeah, I did have more problems with contacts before I started buying this brand (Acuvue II I think, supposed to be better ventilated than the original Acuvue).

Astigmatism either you have or you don't. Do you wear Toric lenses? Those are for astigmatism;) I personally wear Acuvue for Astigmatism - don't remember if there's a deriviative like Oasys or not, but I've no complaints. Of course my cataract surgeon says that he can do laser correction on lens implants and that is really intriguing.

Actually, no. You can avoid correction in contacts, even if you need it in glasses. I can show you my prescription(s) when you visit... ;)

I've got those 24hours contacts that you can wear round the clock for a month. I take them out to breathe as needed during that period and it's no more than a couple times if that. It's great to be able to wear them that long. To wake up and be able to see right away!
I also have glasses as backup, but then my eyes haven't changed from -1.00 since a long time. I also recently had sunglasses made for me which is great during the summer contact troubles.

I buy contacts online, and there's an option to "pay later" (even though I always pay up front), so why don't you buy them that way? Charge them and get them delivered to your door? No blind driving required.
I buy my contact lenses bi-monthly because right now I can't justify spending upwards of $800 on a pair of glasses. My so-called back-up pair are oudated and broken, held together with jewellers wire. I'd love to wear glasses again, but probably won't bother since by spending just under twice that I can get laser eye surgery and call it quits.
Funny story though, when I went to Paris last month I forgot to bring along contacts (other than the ones I had in my eyes at the time). How dumb is that?! So the first thing I had to do was find me a pharmacy and get me some lens solution and a case to keep them in. For dailies, I didn't notice any detioration, they felt great at the end of the week, so that was nice!

You're one of those people that actually throws away disposables when you're supposed to? Wow.

Well, in October I got 12 for each eye of two-week contact lenses... I have 7 left for each eye.
Hooray me.

Well I made the switch to daily dispoables because quite frankly I was getting really lazy about keeping them clean and spending a lot of time in the water with them, and they weren't worth the grief. With daily disposables I don't have to worry about whether I cleaned them well enough, or if I rinsed them off well enough, or where in the hell I put my lens case. Now I just pop them out at th end of the day and start fresh the next day. I can carry a spare pack for each eye in my purse and not freak out if I lose one rubbing my eye the wrong way, or if it gets lost in the bathroom.
It's just easier for me!
