View Full Version : Whatever happened to Movie Threads?

I mean in the good old days we'd always have a thread for new movies appealing to the nerd-herd. Not anymore, apparently.

And I was so hoping to discuss "Wanted".

I haven't been able to go to a movie for a long time. I'd pass on Wanted anyway, because I don't like Jolie. I don't understand why people think she's pretty...I don't think she's pretty at all. And I think she is a terrible actor.

Really?! Cause I see the commercials for that movie and want to make out with my boyfriend. She's smoking hot dude. Just sayin'. Him on the othe hand, James MacAvoy? Blech. Something about him rubs me the wrong way. he's eight different kinds of creepy, regardless of how good an actor her is (think Last King of Scotland).

Dying to see it too Tana! We're just getting over the trauma that was Indiana Jones, so it may be a while until we can bring ourselves to enter a movie theatre.

I guess we disagree on Angelina and Wanted. 1SG and I saw it last night and we both liked it. Some quite amazing CGI - curving bullets anyone? And over the top stunts - very over the top. But it was so much so that watching it wasn't disturbing. Give me Super Fake Fake Violence over realistic fake violence any day.

And I cannot wait for The Dark Knight! I saw the first five minutes online yesterday. Unsettling in a good way.

Nerd herd? You don't watch the show Chuck, do you?

Anyway, any straight male who doesn't find Angelina Jolie unbelievably attractive; well, I don't know what's wrong with them... :D

The Dark Knight does look awesome. I loved the first one. They're saying Heath Ledger could get a post-humous (I know I can't spell) Academy Award for it.

Last movie I saw was Get Smart...

Bryan can't stand her, he doesn't like the fishlips (as he calls them). However, Drew Barrymore's on his List. Strangely enough, I've been told I resemble both of them.

We're going to see Hancock tonight. I'll post something about it tomorrow, if I remember.

James McAvoy was very good in Wanted but sexy he is not. Not to spoil it, but there's one scene in which he does what every cube dweller has longed to do at some point or another - possibly every single day. Morgan Freeman was, well, Morgan Freeman and Angelina certainly gives the fellas what they came for.

Um, Gil? Gross! What is it about the skinny guy that makes him attractive? The accent's cute, I'll give you that, but between his fishy eyes and his general skinnyness...I'm just not seeing the appeal.

Gilshalos Sedai

Well, it helps that Barrymore isn't that anorexic, and Jolie's a freaking skeleton even 8 mos pregnant with twins.

Gil, anyone choosing Xander over Angel immediately calls their taste into question. And I know you would.

I don't see Angelina Jolie as super hot. If you put her in a crowd she'd stand out, but in a crowd of supermodels and actresses, she wouldn't (I think Natalie Portman is the most gorgeous person on earth... different tastes, I suppose). Angelina has a weird face... but a great chest and great lips.

Anyways... I want to see WALL*E. I hear its amazing. Pixar makes really good movies. Dark Knight looks great, and I liked Indiana Jones... I thought it was a little TOO outlandish, and they screwed up at the end (don't want to spoil it for you... it spoils itself, its so bad), but it was entertaining.

I've always thought Angelina was pretty, but I never classified her as either the most beautiful or hottest on earth, or whatever.

I can think of many others...Scarlett Johansson, Charlize Theron, Jessica Alba, Catherine Zeta-Jones...

Anyway, what was I saying? Oh yeah. I'm not usually a fan of skinniness, though.

I'll disclose it freely, Tanaww. After all, I was 5 years old and ignorant.

At one time, before Empire came out in 1980, and before worldly experience taught me what was truly important in a man... I preferred Luke to Han.

Ivhon
07-03-2008, 11:46 AM
The car wreck and 1970's reconstructive surgery did Luke no favors.

Angelina is perhaps not THE most aesthetically perfect woman alive (certainly stands out as someone said), but there is something about that freakshow attitude of hers... And she can act...just doesn't always try (Girl Interrupted was great). Not sure who IS the "hottest" - mainly because once a woman reaches a certain bar of hottitude I can no longer determine what's hotter (these go to eleven...).

Last film I saw at the theater (Alamo drafthouse ftw) was SATC and it was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life. It was like the weekend that Hillary dropped out and I was ONE man in a sea of fashionista feminazis. I was just WAITING to get beaten to death when any of the men made a mistake...

On a side note, I would recommend that all men watch SATC if for no other reason than to have some appreciation of the unreasonable stereotypical expectations that the rest of the media puts on women. My first instinct after the movie (as with the show) was to be pissed off at the unrealistic fairy-tale portrayal of men. I mean, these guys DON'T EXIST. Nearly perfect guys who dote on and put their women on pedestals even though the girls treat them like garbage. Only flawed enough so that they can make ONE mistake to then show that they will come back begging for more abuse from the unforgiving bitches. However, after that thought ran it's course, I thought to myself, "who am I to complain about ONE show and ONE movie in the long history of film where the shoe is for once on the other foot?"

Did the above make ANY sense whatsoever? Didn't think so...

Women are stereotyped, but lets be honest, its one many women embrace. And as for SATC... well, on the topic of men being stereotyped or unrealistically portrayed, it happens a lot more often than you think. And its never mentioned, because the stereotype of men makes complaining about it seem weak. Pretty sweet set up, huh? I mean, for every movie that shows women as some weak creature obsessed with her looks and looking good for men, there is one about a macho man who never admits weakness, yadda yadda yadda... if you've ever watched Stallone (not the porno... his real movies. Yes, there is a porno, had to mention it) or anything by the Governator, you've seen a heavy male stereotype in action... and how many women are complaining about THOSE stereotypes? Very few.

There is a definite double standard in this country, and in the world, I feel. Not to bemoan the fate of white men, but they have it worse. I was walking in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood last night (Port Chester, for any NYers), and some young hispanic kids were taunting me and spitting at me... not on me, but at my feet. I walked on, but if the media got wind of that happening to a hispanic kid in a white neighborhood, there would be a shitstorm. And if I were to say I was discriminated against? I don't think people in this country even realize reverse discrimination is possible (he term reverse discrimination even implies thats its not a real kind of prejudice). Same goes for women. You don't find many men calling women sexist, and if they do they get laughed or shouted down. But god forbid a woman is upset with a single thing you say, it can be construed as sexist.

Not that I think white males have it badly... just pointing out some of the more glaring contradictions in our society. Alright, I'm done.

Heard SATC wasn't great, btw.

"Anyway, any straight male who doesn't find Angelina Jolie unbelievably attractive; well, I don't know what's wrong with them.."

Well, yes, but I do agree with the negative assessment of her acting ability. Not that she's had roles that require tons of acting chops. See, the problem is, people who are really good actors don't get the awards because when you watch their movies, you forget the actor because they project their role so well. Michelle Pfeiffer leaps to mind. Or for you younger folks, Ann Hathaway. Among male type actors, Dustin Hoffman is incredible.

I've heard good things about SATC. Nothing but, in fact. I saw one season (the whole Aiden story-arc for those that watch it), and I thought it was an interesting show but it didn't really appeal to me much. I was mainly watching it because it came on between Oz and Arli$$.

As for acting chops, like John Snow said, the best actors are the ones that you forget who they are. Most A-list actors have what I call Tom Cruise Syndrome. I call it that because I've never seen a movie where I forgot that it was Tom Cruise. This Syndrome applies to any actor to whom I associate one persona whether it's their own or a character. For example, I always associate Steve Carrell with his character from 40 Year Old Virgin. I don't watch The Daily Show, so..

A few actors that have avoided the Tom Cruise Syndrome in my mind are Johnny Depp (up to Pirates), Kevin Spacey, Dustin Hoffman, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Brad Pitt (surprisingly), Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Heath Ledger (even before The Dark Knight)... some more.

It's hard to name those actors because it's hard to remember them because they were so deep in character.

It is possible for characters to temporarily lose the Tom Cruise Syndrome, however, if they do a particularly good performance.

Not left at the altar...late. After having the entire "quiet wedding" turned into a godawful circus without any warning, consultation, compassion or understanding from her...oh, and the comments from the domineering bitch of a wife who after years of neglecting her husband (who is an absolute tool for her, btw) gets cheated on once and flies off the handle. Not saying that the guys are remotely blameless, here, but the girls very much bear a lot of responsibility, too. And have consistently treated the guys like CRAP since episode one of the TV show...yet these guys keep coming back for more. Somehow.

Angel used to make me quivery. Kind of still does on Bones, but not as much. Xander was cute in that nerdy friend's brother kind of way, but I agree, Angel is swoonworthy.

Angelina? I don't call women hot often, but yes, she is enough to make me go...grrrwwwwwllll...if ya know what I mean, nudge nudge wink wink say no more say no more.

I want to see, in the following order:

WallE
Hancock
Hellboy2
Mamma Mia
Wanted

I have heard WallE is the greatest movie this year and cannot wait to see it.

The Dark Knight will be a never ending abyss of buttkissing to Heath Ledger. While I liked almost all of his films quite a bit, Hollywood needs a new dead star to attach the words "a legend taken before his time" which is reaching a bit. Mark my words, there is an Oscar nod in this, with a possible posthumous win. Don't know if it will be deserved, but I am shying away from the movie as I am already repulsed a bit by the Hollywood PR Machines gearing up for this one.

My two cents. Just got back from watching Hancock. Great movie that was absolutely hysterical. I never thought I'd ever get to see a visual of one man's head up another's ass. :p As for great actors, Christian Bale is right now at the top of my list. He was great in American Psycho, 310 to Yuma, Equilibrium, the Prestige, and of course Batman Begins. He's also slated for the next Terminator movie as John Conner and to star in Killing Pablo. Johnny Depp is another one of my favorites, though I wish he'd just keep his mouth shut on politics. I also second Daniel Day Lewis being the man. Last of the Mohicans, Gangs of New York, There Will Be Blood, and the Crucible are all fantastic performances by him.

As for chicks I consider hot, RS is right on Tricia Helfer (goddamn Gaius Balter!). Mila Jovovich is absolutely stunning to me and as a result I consider the ending to Resident Evil Extinction to be the finest ending in all of cinema. *drools over the thought of being caught in a Mila Jovovich dogpile* The top gal for me though has got to be Keira Knightley. Hottest. Girl. On. The. Planet.

Christian Bale bugged the crap out of me the first few times I watched Batman Begins. I hated the movie because of him. And honestly, it had absolutely nothing to do with his acting.

It had to do with his lips.

For those of you who don't know, I'm hearing impaired, and I rely a lot on reading lips to get through conversations and movies without subtitles. I think Bale is British or Scottish and was doing an American accent for Batman Begins. And his lips moved really funny. Seriously, watch Batman Begins again and watch his lips when he says any word with an "s" in it. It's almost like he has a lisp, although he doesn't.

Watch Jay Leno's lips when he says s-words too, and you'll see what I mean. Ofttimes I'll watch a performer and not be able to tell if they have a lisp, and I'll look at someone else next to me and say "Does Glenn Beck have a lisp?" and they'll nod. I can't tell aurally, but visually I can see the lip movement that gives it away.

Due to the Batman suit, Christian Bale's lips are very prominent in some scenes, and let me just say... it drove me nucking futs.

I've seen him in several movies since then, and when he doesn't do the American accent, it looks fine and dandy, and I've actually gotten used to it. I watched Batman Begins recently and I enjoyed it a LOT more this last time. He's definitely a good actor.

Not too keen on Keira Knightley. Hot in Pirates, but not so much anywhere else imho. Same for Lena Headley. Not a fan.

I agree with Sei'taer on his choices of hot female celebrities, as well has his Peter O'Toole comment. Brad Pitt's surprisingly good in most of his movies, but sometimes he just sucks (like in Troy). I attribute this suckiness more to the directors who want a certain style than to Brad Pitt himself. Ed Norton had the same problem in "The Italian Job".

Anaiya is totally hot, ftw.

I think I'll reserve judgment on Heath Ledger's possible Oscar nomination until after I've seen The Dark Knight. I strongly suspect, based on what I've seen so far, that he will deserve, at the very least, a nomination. Not sure if he'll deserve a win, as this season is just beginning and there are definitely going to be quite a few movies coming out this year to compete with the Joker's performance.

I can think of many others...Scarlett Johansson, Charlize Theron, Jessica Alba, Catherine Zeta-Jones...Grrrrreat choices there Crispin's Crispian (do we get to use anything shorter? Though, my brain want to write Prince Caspian of Narnia). Probably just the foursome I'd pick on a given day. :D

As for Angelina Jolie, I'm not particularly impressed by her. Something about those big botoxy lips and her eyes that creeps me out. Also I think she looks too tall even for me, but that may be cause she plays against short actors. Nice rack though.

Regarding the Curves pic. Looks great. Except that niggling thought that thinks of really big apples cut in half and stuffed under skin... :)

To add to the hotlist, I'll throw in Sarah Chalke from Scrubs and Elisha Cuthbert (from 24 and the Girl Next Door etc).
Saw Megan Fox for the first time in Transformers and that was some kind of religious experience :)

HoT!

I'll agree about Megan Fox man. I kept gazing at her thinking that that kind of body should be illegal. She was dirty hot.

Yeah, I can't believe I *forgot* about Megan Fox. I think I was just trying to keep her all to myself. Also, Keira Knightley is way hot in the movies that aren't Atonement or Pride and Prejudice.

Angelina Jolie is not pretty, so y'all can have her.

Deal.

Also, I nominate this for the greatest hijacking of a thread. Ever. I know Sinistrum's got the second, am I right?

Personally, I'm not a fan of the 12 year old boy body that both have and the horrible fake lips that both also have. Just my 2 cents...you guys are welcome to both of them.;)
Knightly did a good acting job in Atonement though...talk about a sad freaking movie though...that little witch of a younger sister I just wanted to slap her repeatedly for all the crap she did.

Dude, did you watch Transformers, cause a boy's body is not what I'd call Fox! Curves in all the right places that one, Jolie less so, I'll admit. Slim, yes. Boyish, hell no. (insert my much missed devil horns here :()

Also, for some unknown reason, I feel the need to emphasize that neither Jolie nor Fox have fake lips. That's not Botox boys. ;)

Dav, she's 22. She's young, hot and nubile. No work - whatever the internets say.

Also, word has it, she's officially single now too. No more being engaged to the sadness that is Brian Austin Greene.

~is in awe~ Sini seconded something my brother said... Wow. I would've thought the principle of the thing would have stopped him no matter what the topic. Apparently Flight of the Conchords (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFjrbmj0CUc) is right. Enough hot women can make this world very peaceful.

Considering that some girls get their breasts done at 16...that means absolutely nothing. Have you ever watched Real Housewives? All the kids including the ones that are still minors ahve gotten major work done. The fact that she's 22 means nothing.

Hahahaha!

Who cares what is real or not real? Megan Fox looks HOT, and you can't tell by just looking at her what is real or not, thus, she is hot, period. Some just look ultra hot, and some do have had some things done, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Also, google lies sometimes. I know, hard to realize, but it happens.

imho, fake only matters if a) it's so obvious it looks like shit or b) you get to touch. Otherwise, as far as eye candy goes, I couldn't give two rats asses if they're fake or not.

right. I guess I'm a little late..
Megan Fox: Hot.
Angel: Hot.
Angelina: Totally hot.

My personal favourite: Jensen Ackles (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0010075/) :D so hot.

and WallE FTW. Can't wait. I've reserved the lifesize promotional card wallE from our local cinema when they are done with it. since I saw the trailer a few months ago, I'm completely in love with the cute little guy.

But yeah, gotta go with Gil. Mal takes the cake. (Though, to be fair, I don't know who Dr. Daniel Jackson is.)

Don't worry, you'll get an education being down here. And, Jackson was hot, till Col. Cameron Mitchell joined up.

And Ana... Totally agree on Jensen Ackles.

Really? I don't find her that attractive. Keira Knightley crushes her in the hotness and acting departments, but I'll stick with Anne Hathaway as my pick. :D

PS I notice you haven't accused Knightley of any plastic surgery... :D

Who said anything about acting?

On Keira Knightley...I just don't see it. She has no body whatsoever and her face has had a ton of work including her horrible fake lips that she constantly gets done. On her acting abilities all I will say is this: King Arthur

Yeah.

Davian93
07-08-2008, 11:43 AM
On Knightley: She also looks like she spent time at Dachau.

Knightly in that pic was a big turn off, she's off from my list if she's looking like that nowadays.

Heigl is nice, first saw here in that sci fi series she was in, alien teenagers who is stranded on earth... what the hell was the show's name? hmm... Anyway, she looked good (better? mayhaps) then too :)

Amanda Tapping looks good too. Just saw she's 43 now, she can easily spank some of the younger girls' bottoms, both metaphorically and literally (Oh I so hope literally!)
