Hello,

I will begin by pointing out that I don't mean to reference Min Farshaw in the title of this thread. I don't know Norwegian, but I believe the expression to mean something like "My Greetings." I've just always preferred to hail people with some variation of the word "hail" itself excluding the German for obvious considerations.

I just recently got into the Wheel of Time, which I am somewhat grateful for because I doubt I'd be able to abide the frustration of waiting for the books to be released had I begun reading them earlier. I have been a fan of fantasy novels for a long time now. My mother is a grammar school English teacher, and one of the books she assigns is The Hobbit, so that is how my interest arose.

Before beginning WOT I had strayed a little bit from fantasy. I was getting tired of Feist's series even though I won't stop reading them and I had gotten extremely agitated that Martin's Song of Fire and Ice doesn't appear to be a priority of his, so I started to dedicate more time to science fiction and the classics. After a while I got the yearning for a good fantasy series so I randomly chose WOT.

That was about a month and a half ago. I read the books as quickly as I could which coincided very nicely with the release of ToM, and since I finished it I decided to start perusing the online WOT community. I think the series is excellent, and even though BS's style is different, I still enjoy it and look forward to AMoL.

I have spent the past several hours, while I should have been studying, reading theories and predictions on theoryland and checking out the forums. I think this will provide me with a great way to stay connected to the series while I wait for the final book. I feel like I lost something special by not getting to grow up with the books as it appears many people on here have and I definitely anticipate learning a lot about the story that I hadn't noticed on my own in my rushed, single read of the series.

Welcome to Theoryland, Hunter! We're glad you found WoT, even if it was late in the game. Joining a WoT forum is just the beginning; the hive mind has a lot to offer. And noobs who are eager to learn always do well.

first of all welcome. straighjackets are -> that way. they're highly recommended.

and "min hyllest" means "my homage". closer to what you wanted would be "mitt hallo" even if that is a... tad weird :p "min hilsning" would probably fit the best, but (I'm no language proffessor) "hilsning" doesn't stem from "hail" AFAIK.

and that concludes today's lesson in norwegian :p

soon there'll be people on fire and marshmallows

Consider yourself officially welcomed to Theoryland hunter!!! (I'm really late! I was reading, no breaks while reaing new WoT books! So none of you are getting real personal greets, be glad you get it in your thread LOL)As I'm sure you've noticed, we have a pretty decent community of WoT fanatics over here. One of the ways that we keep it all friendly is a short list of courtesies we ask people to follow and, once in a while, actually do get followed. Imagine that! Insane people following some sort of order!

1) Don't flood the board with multiple THREADS all at once.
Allow us the time to absorb, evaluate, and discuss, OR LAUGH at one or two ideas, OR JOKES at a time. Some of us like to do a little research before responding and that can take a little time. Of course, we also have those others who are just a bit slow. Read that as "just can't handle more than one thought in their heads at once" or "dial-up modem". Your choice. I'd suggest "have a real life", but not likely. Does anyone still have dial up? Wow...it's getting hard to give the slow people an excuse

Addendum to 1) Try to stay on topic.
Going off on tangents can be super fun and is something we are all guilty of your's truly included but try and keep threads on topic unless, 1) the thread is dead or 2) the thread naturally moves over to another topic. This rule is much more lax for joke threads, pop culture threads...etc.

2) Try to back up your opinions & theories.
You'll get a lot more respect if you can. Quotes from the books (of which you CANNOT read too much) are your best weapon. Quotes from interviews are semi-acceptable. Gut feelings are pseudo-acceptable. Whitecloak blind-faith is best submitted while wearing asbestos panties.

3) Feel free to get as emotionally involved as you'd like.
Discussions can get very heated. But try not to take things personally. Remember: we only insult the ones we love. Or the ones we eventually hand over to the Trollocs.

4) Be respectful.
A lot of people have been around Theoryland for a long time. Being a Youngling means you're new around here. We do understand that you may have been reading WoT forever, but if you're gonna pick a fight regarding a WoT theory with someone who's an Elder, Ancient or Hero, understand that they've been around for a while now, and probably have posting friends. And Tamyrlin is Lord of the Board for a reason: this whole place is his brainchild. Keep that in mind. They also have posting enemies.... a good little bit of information to tuck away.

Addendum to 4: This is an international community.
In regards to the Non-WoT discussion groups, please respect the opinions of people from nations and cultures other than your own, even if you disagree with them or the policies of their leaders and politicians. Try to remember that not everyone here has the same outlook or life experience that you might. If you want to send a letter or e-mail to anyone in particular to indicate any specific moral, educational, intellectual, or genetic deficiencies they may have, feel free. Just please don't do it here.

Addendum 1 to Addendum 4: Please no angry profanity.
If you really need to tell someone off, be creative. And replacing characters with @$$ does NOT constitute creativity. I like tend to like the Shakespearean approach myself. The smarter and more subtle you are with it, just makes the person look that much more an idiot.

Addendum 2 to Addendum 4: Please be nice to Newbies.
We were all new at one time you are one right now and there is no need to come down on anyone for asking questions that to the elder community may be basic knowledge. This is for you to remember after you've been here awhile.

Addendum 3 to Addendum 4: Please TRY not to feed the Trolls.
Trust me, it ain't easy at times, but ignore the obvious instigators. Just sit yourself down between the Heroes and Ancients sharpening the WTF Couch sticks. There are many on the board who know how to deal with this breed, leave them to it. It can be quite entertaining. If things get too offensive to the population in general, Mods will intervene. We like to try and use enough wit to neutralize the trollies without help...

5) Please don't use the New Users Forum to recruit.
We have plenty of room in the other forums for begging for support for factions, theories, and the TCA. Please let the newbies look around for a while before taking sides in any pseudo-battles. ~do not feel you MUST click on Lordy's sig links and join just cause he's Lordy... it's not mandatory, butt shhhh! I did not tell you that!

6) Most important: Have Fun!
We do this because we love it and like to think that we are, at least, reasonably intelligent. Hell, some of us have deluded ourselves into believing that we've evolved into supremely intelligent beings! Half the posters here believe that divine supremacy has already come to them! My vote is for Frenzy, and myself, of course. You know the Truth when you see it. Don't let T and her massive bag o' quotes fool you there are always ways to fight back! With your on bag o'quotes of course!

We will assume some intelligence on your part. You found us, didn't you? Until you prove otherwise…and there are many who have, you'll be safe. If you get hurt if you do prove otherwise, I will offer my one free Healing…but just that once. After that you get to meet a special pair of chains, Mwahahahaa

Remember, you EARN your respect here, it's not given out freely and some may never know the pleasure.

Welcome to our little rounded corner! It’s a great time!

Enjoy!

Haha thanks for the correction. When I was way younger I wanted to learn Norwegian and got one of those teach yourself books and got nowhere with it. I took the expression I used from a song called "Min Hyllest til Vinterland" which someone told me meant "My Greeting to Winter Country." I was never sure if that was correct and I hope I didn't offend in my ignorance. Don't worry, though, I won't bother you with questions about the language. I just have a cursory interest in the subject because I like some bands from the country.

no offense taken. norwegian is quite difficult to learn :p

so what other bands than Satyricon do you like?

Well I enjoyed all of the true Norwegian black metal bands and some Norwegian death metal especially bands like DarkThrone, Emperor, Gehenna, Mayhem, Burzum, Immortal, Myrkskog, Enslaved, Ildjarn, Gorgoroth, Borknager, and Ulver. I liked The Kovenant when they were The Covenant.

I have a harder time getting into black metal now. I definitely still can list to early Satyricon and Emperor, when Mortiis was in Emperor. I like the first few albums of Dimmu Borgir and Old Man's Child as well. But I think some black metal bands got better as they grew up. I like Ulver way better as they got folksier and I liked Varg's ambient stuff better than his black metal stuff.

I also like some viking influenced stuff like Amon Amarth and Kampfar but especially Storm. Storm's album just sounded awesome. Heh, I used to work at this pizza place where everyone was a little goofy and would do randomly fun things so I taught a couple people to sing Oppi Fjellet. It was hilarious as they would be singing "og om du noengang lukter kristenmans blodt, oppi fjellet, ja hent oksa og kutt dem nad." They definitely didn't know what they're saying, and I apologize if I spelled it wrong or if the words offend you, but I'm pretty sure I know what they mean. It was just funny to have people singing that unwittingly.

Oppi Fjellet is a classic. me and some friends usually sing it out loud when the beer has a good hold of us :p

and I agree most black metal bands were better at the beginning, but I still love Dimmu. was a that concert with them a couple weeks ago. was awesome.

Borknagar is still good, Ulver has turned a bit too weird IMO, though they're concerts are supposed to be pretty epic.

and yeah. Kovenant were way better when they were Covenant. Nexus Polaris rocked.

but my taste has mellowed a bit lately too. not so much black/death-metal anymore

I saw Dimmu shortly after Puritanical came out and I found the show to be good although the crowd was unsavory. It was full of all kinds of scene kids, which I really can't abide by.

Yea my tastes I guess have mellowed or maybe my interests have just expanded. I still love to throw on a good black or death song if I'm in the mood. I think when I'm depressed black metal makes me feel exultant, like I could destroy the world if I wanted to. And I like that feeling. For a long time metal, and especially black metal, was a big part of my life. I was an obnoxious elitist about it. But now I listen to all kinds of music.

Since you are familiar with black metal I'll share something funny with you. After my black metal interests had waned, but the scene started to gain hold over here and you even started seeing shirts for some BM bands in mall shops like Hot Topic, my friends and I were considering launching a black metal joke t-shirt series.

They would just be unadorned black t-shirts which read sayings in plain font which said things like:

"I won't wear corpse paint but I'll help rob graves"

"Therion Burns"

"Ancient sold out"

"Euronymous was going to kill me first"

etc.

There were others but I don't really remember them. I guess the only one I still find funny is the first one. I still wish I had made some and tried selling them outside a cradle of filth concert or something. I wouldn't make any money but I would have laughed if anyone bought one.
