I would be worried that someone took that long to pass a driving test...one of the easiest tests a person can take.

~won't mention that I still haven't passed it after a few tries~ :o

Cut her some slack. :D

Uhm... Dav, I'd have to disagree there... a driving test is most definitely NOT an easy test.

Having passed both a US driving test and a German one (that one was fairly difficult), I think both are pretty passable.

passable:yes, easy: no

Maybe the Dutch one is really hard...the German one is much harder than the US one from what I recall.

I'm presuming the German one is about on par with the Dutch one. I also assume you had some year's driving experience before taking the test in Germany?

4-5 years in the States...

I didn't actually take a test to get my license

I did take a 20 question test to get my learner's permit. I got an 86 first try, and only read 3 1/2 chapters of the book, and I had maybe like 10 hrs of in-car driving with my parents instruction.

I'd say it's VERY easy to pass a drivers test...at least, where I'm located it is.

And a year later, I got my softcopy license in the mail, and went in to get my picture taken. Yipee.

I passed it first time too, when I was 15. Then when I moved to another state I had to take it again because they wouldn't let you just change to a new state unless you were tested and I passed it without even studying on the same day I found out I had to take it, then when I moved back I had to do the same thing again and passed it very easily.

Really, it's not that hard.

Uhm... Mato and Sei: we're not talking about the questions test here, we're talking about the practical test.

Terez

The practical test is usually pretty easy in the US. They just take you around the block usually and make sure you have a stop sign or two to go through. Some places make you parallel park but they don't do that where I live.

In other words, the written test is the hardest part, unless you just suck at driving. :D

Okay... I looked it up, and over here, you're judged on the following points:

Moving out
Driving on straight and curved roads
Behavious on and near crossroads
Turning, moving onto and off Interstate
Overtaking
Opposite traffic and being overtaken
Changing lanes
Special part of the road (like roundabouts)
Special movements (like parking (either reverse or parallel) and moving away while on a hill)

Each of these is judged on the following parts:

Use of clutch, shifting gears, throttle
Use of breaks
Use of light and other equipment
Control of the vehicle
Driving dicisive and social
Interests of other road-users
Looking-behaviour (i.e. are you using your mirrors properly/do you look over your shoulder before turning)
Giving way
Position on the road
Keeping distance
Speed
Reaction to traffic lights
Reaction to other traffic signs
Giving and reaction to signals
Slowing down/braking/stopping

Not that this whole thing take 1 or 1½ hour

Yeah Driving test are super easy here. First the questions, then they took me around the block...one stoplight turned right...one stopsign...car broke down... 3 hours and a new alternator later... turned right then another right into the parking lot and pulled into a space...

I passed the written test first time, but I can't pass the driving one. I haven't even made it out of the driving center yet, I can't get past the standard stuff.

My first driving test was in Minnesota. No parallel parking, but it was on an obstacle course. 1st time, changed lanes in the middle of an intersection and forgot a turn signal. Guy failed me on the spot. I took it again and passed. Found out I was moving to Texas before I even got the hard copy of my license. MN would not forward the license in the mail.

I got to Texas and had to retake the test, because they didn't accept the paper license as valid. THIS test had parallel parking on it. Didn't know that. Plus, apparenly, Texas had some odd questions I didn't know about. (I shit you not, there was actually a question about who has the right of way, a car or a cow. The cow actually has the right of way.) So, failed THAT one.

Finally got it on the 4th try. I was nearly 18 before I could legally drive. Bastards.

Simple solution on that one...ask yourself what would make sense...and then take into account that you're in Texas and pick the exact opposite.

Hadn't figured that out yet. I was naive enough to think everyone was logical.

Besides, ever seen how much damage hitting a cow can do to a car? You're damned right they have the right of way.

It can't be any worse than a Moose (we have tons of those here)...Moose suck.

WARNING: NOT A PRETTY PIC...MOOSE FATALITY INVOLVED

This one was hit head on and went through the entire vehicle...driver didn't quite make it.

Good point...that would suck...though Moose have big antlers...

I think I found one that trumps both...

the first time, at 15, I took the test in a 5 speed car and passed, but I only had to make 4 right turns. The second time, I had to take the written and the driving. I was in a 4 speed Toyota 4 wheel drive. We drove about 20 miles and then parallel parked at the end. It was no problem, but I had been driving for 7 or 8 years by then. I could have parallel parked during the first test, because Pop was sure they would make me do it so he taught me how when I was learning to drive. I never thought parallel parking was all that hard anyway. Oh yeah, for the record, when I moved back to TN, I only had to take the written.

The only problem I seem to have is my speed. Thats what I get tickets for, but I have to say that I come by it naturally cause Pop and my Mom both have a problem with wanting to go fast

While driving, there are a couple kinds of rights:

Tonnage rights - your vehicle outweighs mine. Your semi has the right of way over my sub-compact. Many times, this is what applies with cows, buffalo, and moose.

Give a shi!te rights - This one is value-inverse, the less your car is worth, the more your rights. If I'm driving an old beater car and you're driving a brand new Lexus, I don't give a sh!te if I scratch the paint a little bit more.

Seriously though, I was once told that while driving rights are what you're granted, not what you have.

Hey, Sei, I'd just like to point out, I learned to parallel park in a minivan.

Lol, exactly. For a while many years ago, our family car was a Checker. No one messes with a Checker.

Obscure bit than no one here in California seems aware of - pedestrians have right of way except over ambulances running code 3 (lights & sirens). My daughter was very frustrated the other day at her EMT job by a gaggle of women, a couple with kids in strollers, who sauntered across an intersection even though they saw and heard her ambulance coming. She then had the audacity to beep at them (ok, an ambulance 'beep' is pretty frickin loud). They actually slowed their saunter down a bit! Grrrrrrr! That could've been a relative of theirs the ambulance was going to.

When we lived in Syracuse, we were driving home from the store on a road that paralleled a golf course. Ahead of us about 25 yards was a minivan just passing through a group of trees. Suddenly, a deer bolted out of the bushes on the left side of the road, across the lane, and directly into the side of the (moving) minivan. The deer literally bounced off, fell down, got back up, and bolted back across the road into the bushes.

All this happened in a matter of about five seconds, and the minivan was probably traveling at least 30 mph.

It was surreal. It almost happened to us, too, outside of Jackson, Wyoming. Deers is stupid.

Aced the written the first time I took it and aced the driving test first time too. Course I was 18 and had been driving with my dad for over a year but still ;) We went around the block, left turn, right turn, down a couple of streets, another left, pulled over, backed up straight, performed a 3 point turn, and returned to the parking lot of the DMV, pulling into the parking spot reserved for driving tests. Easy as pie. It also helped that I'd learned on a stick shift and the test was in an automatic :) ;)

Hey, Sei, I'd just like to point out, I learned to parallel park in a minivan.

Me too Gil, and now I can't do it right on a normal sized car. I haven't actually needed to do it since my road test, though.

Our test is something like the dutch one, very similar. The driving part takes about 45 minutes or so.

You americans get away with stuff too easy :)
