I've noticed this phenomenon for years...Breyers Ice Cream used to be 2 Quarts back in the day, then it went to 1.75 and now its a miniscule 1.5 quarts. For $3.99 (Pricechopper) a box that's ridiculous...if I go to Shaws its $4.99 which is brutal but its a relative steal at $2.99 at Hannafords.

Note: I have a near photographic to photographic memory and I comparison shop at grocery stores so I can tell you anytime a price goes up at any of the 3 stores I frequent. Its a gift and a curse in that I know when things are a good price but I also know when we're getting gouged by another price hike. Eggs for example. I remember paying $0.89 for a dozen Large eggs at MarketBasket (A MA grocery store) when we lived in MA in 2006. Now we pay anywhere from $1.89 (Shaws) to $2.59 (Hannafords) for the same dozen eggs. What the heck man? Bread, Butter, Fresh (and frozen) veggies/fruits, milk etc have all skyrocketed in the past year or two. The only things that are ever on sale are packaged meals and other crap that we don't eat like chips/snacks. Trying to eat healthy cost $$$.

It's all Gil's fault...well, it's the fault of the people she works for.

All those products need to get from the production facilities to the distribution centers to the stores. All of this requires nice big trucks which run on gas. Gas prices nearly double, costs to transport them spikes and in turn the price of the merchandise increases to cover those costs.

I know the reason but its brutal seeing the prices go up a few cents everytime I go to the store.

Problem is, you can't STOP buying food unless you opened your own farm.

And SBX, don't EVEN go there.

Even that would cost more as I'd still have to buy my cattle, chickens, sheep etc corn/oats to eat for which the price has also gone up. Even the fuel for my farming equipment would make it a tough sell. Those gov't subsidies would be nice though.

oh, but I did Gil.

At this point it's the speculators and OPEC. Not the oil companies and certainly not my tiny little company.

Also, frankly, Ethanol is more to blame than gas/oil.

Not doing a very good job, SBX. I'm not even irritated at you. You should really work on that, you know.

but I find a combination of the local farmers' market and Trader Joe stores keeps me pretty happy.

The ice cream thing has been happening for longer than oil prices have been spiking. I noticed it 10 years ago--you used to get a half gallon, but they cut it down by just 12% or something so you don't notice it.

I'm sure it's just a way to increase revenue and decrease cost. You go get a half gallon of ice cream for the family, and find out it's not enough. Next time, you get two. Or, if you're cheap like me, you eat less. Either way, they're selling you less cream for the same price.

Actually, trains and big tractor trailer trucks run on diesel which is quite a bit more expensive than gas. I know around here it is about 70 cents a gallon more for diesel.

Inflation. That's why the European Central Bank increased the interest rates. Perhaps your FED could consider the same.

What, and cause MORE people to loose their houses?

They did it to themselves with adjustable rate mortgages and interset only ones...I feel no sympathy.

I figured that. I'm just annoyed that the Senate passed a mortgage bailout bill yesterday 84-12 in favor of helping those idiots.

Not necessarily. Some got caught with a house to sell in a market with a lot of those loans in it and were sucked into the undertow. and I think you should feel just a little for some of them.

Funny that was the one Obama flipped on. You'd think he would have picked something a little less sensitive when he started his move to the center. Now he has to move even farther to keep being seen as a centrist.

AWell yeah there's exceptions to everything. I made a broad sweeping statement...I didn't mean to dictate policy decisions.

Reminds me of how Mars Bars and Snickers increase their prices. Firstly they do a bar size increase, like say and extra 10-20%. Then a couple of months later they put up the price, two-three months after that they reduce the size back to the original and leave the price the same. Sneaky.

That, sir, is a preposterous crime against humanity. Don't fuck with the chocolate. What's next? Making a 40 oz a 38?

Davian, you leave the policy decisions to Mr. Vice President Hopper and myself. We'll take care of everything.

those limey BASTARDS!

oh, in a moderate hijack. Speaking of FISA, and somewhat related to it with the whole Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac things, what exactly is going on? I know just enough about it to know it's serious, but hardly more than that.
