View Full Version : I would totally do Thom.

Thom has one flaw. He's a bit on the old side.

In every. other. single. freaking. way. he is PERFECT. I would take old attractive perfect guy over young flawed super model guy any day. And I am posting this because people keep saying it's unrealistic that Moiraine likes him.

Thom is:

1. funny. At least Moiraine thinks so.
2. athletic http://www.readandfindout.com/site_media/images/smilies/winky.gif
3. heroic
4. a great singer
5. a great musician
6. a great story teller
7. extremely intelligent
8. obviously charming. he practically has women falling all over him throughout the series. dena was 22, there were multiple women in the stone of tear who wanted him, and riselle liked him
9. sensitive
10. good with children (elayne)

and lastly, I find all of these people attractive, and I'm 16 years younger than Moiraine:

Thom's totally attractive. I can't help but think the sexual tension would be better with Demmy though. You'd just have to mention "LTT" and you'd be off to the races.

Demmy and Moiraine or Demmy and Thom?

And are we talking Demandred or Demi Moore?

And I think you left sensitive off that list. Unless that's filed under Heroic? Slapping Morgase and going after Owein was way more rokken than being court-bard.

And I think you left sensitive off that list.

Added. Seriously, he has no flaws. Maybe he's *too* perfect... maybe it's compulsion. Or maybe he has a vice we don't know about yet. Like he never washes his gleeman's cloak. Poor Moiraine :(. It's probably infested with baby grolm.

I don't think any of the drawings in the book were super serious about how the people are supposed to look. I say this because the picture of the fade isn't all that scary. They are supposed to wear a black that is darker then night itself and be the very vision of death, but thats not how it came across at all. I mean it let you know what the fade's are supposed to look like, but I certainly wasn't going 'I would hate to face off against that' when seeing the picture.

This picture of thom always seemed a little to goofy to me. So basically, it gives a rough idea but its not an exact.

Thom is a severe alcoholic. Mat, who we all know for his carousing, had a hard time keeping him sober post Denna-death.

Thom is a restless soul. He clearly prefers travelling to staying in one spot with creature comforts, and looks for excuses to go out into the world. Ergo, he ran from Morgase to his estranged nephew. He ran off from Elayne's court bard position to go on another adventure to save Moiraine. And lastly, he clearly prefers being a gleeman to a court bard, as when he becomes Moiraine's warder he asks if they make cloaks with patches on them.

Is Thom the man? Of course, is he "Perfect" absolutely not.

I'm not buying any of that. He's not an alcoholic. He's barely touched alcohol since that one short span of his life when a person he loved was murdered because of politics.

There's nothing wrong with liking to travel, and the reasons you listed were all perfectly good reasons.

This is just a really funny thread.
I hope this is not anathema to mention here, but reading the books, the way I pictured Thom was as a moustached, more handsome version of that wizard from the Legend of the Seeker television series (sure, it's crap plot-wise and I hated the one Sword of Truth novel I tried, but the series was kind of fun).

I wonder if the yet unresolved Owyn thing will eventually drive a wedge between Moiraine and Thom as it did Morgase and Thom (though, due to the Compulsion or otherwise, Morgase doesn't seem aware of Thom's nephew's problem).

It won't. Re-read the chapter in TSR where Thom and Moiraine talk about it. It will never be an issue. Moiraine thinks the people who did it should be brought to justice just as much as Thom does.

Thom can't be that unappealing if Morgase, Dena, Elayne, Riselle, and many other women less than half his age were attracted to him. Also, it's best to ignore all portraits from The World of Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time; not even Lanfear looked good there.

The only thing that could have been an obstacle to the Thom/Moiraine pairing is that Thom killed her half brother Taringail, but Moiraine already knows about that and didn't seem to hold it against him. She knew that Taringail was planning to kill Morgase before he conveniently died in a "hunting accident." I doubt Moiraine was particularly attached to Taringail in any case.

The Oval Lecture Hall stood empty today, or at any rate emptier by far than Egwene had seen it in recent memory. Hundreds of novices at once now took in regular lessons here, addresses on philosophy from Brendas, on Old Tongue grammar from Phaedrine, on ethics from a rotating panel of Red sisters. Stand-lamps even to the furthest rows in the back would be lit, filling the hall with a radiance that had not been seen since the time of Artur Hawkwing. But today only the first four rows were lit, the mirrors supplementing the light from the high south windows with a golden glow. It was time.

Only a few witnesses were invited today, to what surely would be the most private wedding either an Amyrlin or an Andoran prince had ever had. The three dozen Aes Sedai in the corridors, culled from the ranks of the most loyal among the sisters whose missteps had seen them sworn to her, would ensure that. Steady Silviana had offered to lead them; she was still not fond of Gawyn. Yukiri, and Saerin, and Seaine, of course, Egwene’s staunchest backers in the Hall, sat on the left, on the bride’s side of the central aisle. They were joined by Siuan and Leane, who had bundled a surprised Bran and Marin al’Vere in earlier this morning. They, and Egwene’s ecstatic sisters, sat on the very first bench, beaming somewhat fixedly. And Nynaeve–

Where was Nynaeve? If that bloody woman doesn’t make it, I’ll box her ears personally, Egwene thought. And then name her a penance that won’t see her sitting right for a year!

Gawyn’s party was somewhat embarrassingly threadbare. His mother, of course–Egwene eyed Morgase sideways–and her scandalous husband. Galadedrid, wearing a shimmering satin blouse emblazoned with a golden sunburst over his heart, and tight white trousers over soft white leather boots. Egwene could not imagine what she had seen in the man. On his arm was that whore Berelain, barely squeezed into a green silk dress in the Domani style, embroidered at the neck and along the arms with thread-of-gold, and cinched with a golden belt at the waist. She really should have spoken to Gawyn about what sort of people were appropriate to extend a wedding invitation to. Berelain’s smile was a smirk about as well-hidden as her breasts. Elayne had come, of course, and Aviendha with her, though Egwene had spoken to the flighty Queen of Andor about her consort, and the conditions under which he’d be allowed entrance. Rand had evidently declined them.

Egwene turned back to Daise Congar, the Wisdom of Emond’s Field, who would be officiating today. Light! I am to be married, and by Daise Congar! The remainder of the Women’s Circle, Alsbet Luhhan and Neysa Ayellin and Nela al’Caar and the rest, crowded around her and Gawyn, their smiling faces reminding her of – No. I am the Amyrlin Seat. Something of that thought must have come through on her face, for their smiles faded. Daise cleared her throat, and Galad and Egwene’s eldest sister Berowyn ascended the dais behind her, taking a pair of red ribbons from the lectern.

“Does anyone here object to the marriage of Egwene al’Vere, the Watcher of the Seals, the Flame of Tar Valon, the Amyrlin Seat, to the man Gawyn Trakand?”

And a voice answered. Rage enveloped Egwene like a blanket, like a noose, and she reached out to saidar as she spun to face the speaker. Siuan.

“That isn’t necessary, Mother. I swear that I make no objection to your marriage to young Gawyn, and you must know it to be true. But on this day of binding and vows, I want to confirm an earlier oath that was made to me.” The entire hall was staring at her. Egwene’s mother was furious, and even Berelain looked incredulous. “Master Trakand. On the day I escaped Tar Valon, you promised me, and I quote, ‘If anything happens to Egwene or my sister, I will find you’”–her gruff imitation of Gawyn’s voice was truly absurd– “‘wherever you hide, and I will make sure the same happens to you.’”

A moment passed in silence, Siuan still the object of everyone’s attention, and with nary a blush at that.

“Siuan, you know that if I ask it, the Hall will see you stilled once again. And I will forbid anyone from Healing it this time. What is the POINT of this?”

“The point, Mother, is that Gawyn made an oath as binding as the one he’ll make to you today. He promised that whatever happened to Elayne would happen to me. Well, look at Elayne.” She looked, unwillingly. Elayne seemed startled, the silly goose. “She has two plump grunters in the oven. I want the same.”

Saidar pulsed in Egwene, all she could draw, the sweetness becoming pain, and she prepared a lance of fire, aimed directly at that mole on Siuan’s throat that was now as obvious as Dragonmount. “What did you just say?”

“I want children, Mother. And Gawyn has promised them to me.”

“Light, you crazed chit! Did you not only last month marry Lord Bryne?”

Siuan blushed. The eyes of the audience were back on her, the Women’s Circle stuttering in an incoherent echo of Egwene’s fury. “The Warder bond…” She trailed off and coughed. “The bond can enhance a man in many ways, Egwene, but it can’t turn back time. A lionfish that’s dead and rotted cannot be hooked.”

Another moment of silence. Suddenly, on the groom’s side of the aisle, Morgase smirked and elbowed Tallanvor. “Looks like I sold at just the right time,” she murmered in his ear, too soft to be heard had Egwene not been holding the Source.

Egwene spluttered. “Why don’t you ask the Dragon to do it then, Siuan? He’s never met a woman he’d refuse!”

The mole. Egwene began to will the weave into being. Siuan embraced saidar herself, weaving a shield with her pathetic–Light, does the woman have an angreal? Where did she–

Egwene was suddenly, dimly aware that Elayne and Aviendha began to glow with as much strength as she herself held.

Don't forget that Thom's former lover Morgase's other former lover Gareth Bryne is now in the sack with Moiraine's former lover Siuan.

I'm so confused!

All I know is, once these silly old men (even the one that I'd Totally Do) are gone and dead, Moiraine and Siuan can get back together and all will be well for the next 200-500 years. Until the Seanchan destroy the White Tower, that is :). Maybe they'll be allowed to be heart-friends. Okay, I'm totally disgusted with myself now.

There's nothing better than experiencing being a damane with your former pillow-friend; maybe soon-to-be-new-former-pillow-friend. ;) :D

not to segue the horribleness that is thinking of them as damane, but I've been putting a nerdy amount of thought into how to combine all of my favorite characters into Super Awesome Character.

Thom and Moiraine have a daughter and name it Innloiraine.

Mat and Tuon have a son and name it Seluwhin.

Siuan and Bryne have a daughter and name it Moiraine.

Egwene and Gawyn have a son and name it Nicolai.

Seluwhin and Innloiraine have a daughter. Moiraine and Nicolai have a son. The son marries the daughter and create this miraculous spawn who is so awesome that she doesn't have a name. She goes to Shayol Ghul and kills the Dark One permanently and we all live happily ever after.

If WoT was a soap opera it'd be called 'Chest-hairs and Pillow-friends'... :D
Guess it's too bad for them that the damane get all their pleasures through the a'dam.

Siuan's preoccupied.

Please do continue! :D

Siuan and Moiraine can never become damane. Because, gray is simply not their colour.

I've decided to post a link to my fan fiction here instead of the correct place, because I'm shy and rebellious.

Thanks. I'm not sure about the head-patting though.

Well, alternatively I could come up with criticism such as your assumption that no one foresaw the possibility that Mat might bring along some unexpected but important guests.
If he'd appeared there with Aelfinn and Eelfin ambassadors, then leaving them outside might have led to trouble. If he'd appeared with king Roedran then he too might have been welcome. Not to mention that Rand was likely to react a lot better to Thom than to meeting most members of the Hall of the Tower.

But doing that was a lot more work than just some random patronizing gesture.
