View Full Version : I'm a shorty

..so I went to the agency, and they decided they were going to measure me, and told me I'm apparently 5'6...
so I was a little confused (I know my posture has been awful, and my spine kinda never really got streched again after my accident, but I don't know how I would have managed to shrink by 2 whole inches..).
Anyway, so they said that they could only take me on as an extra, afterall, because they only take models 5'8 and over..
then they say they would like to sign me as commercial model anyway, but I would have to get a commercial portfolio, which differs from the fashion and editorial oriented portfolio I have at the moment. (more smiley, real life photos..)
anyway, so I say yes to that, get home, look on their website, and they have entered me as 5'8 fashion model... so I'm contracted and signed :D
not sure what the fuss was all about, though..

I'm amazed. and still a little confused.
especially because they kinda contradicted themselves a lot.
oh, and now I am apparently 5'7...
I don't really want to seem self absorbed and constantly post new pictures here.. I've even kinda given up on putting new ones on facebook because I don't want to look like I'm showing off..

Good to see you're back up to 5'7". Keep drinking milk and I'm sure you'll regain your previous height ;)

07-15-2008, 11:53 AM
well, they keep changing my height.
thank god they put me in the right section, though.
I think it may have something to do with my horrible posture and mu constant backache (jay blames it on sleeping and spending most my days in the fetal position, or some bent version of it, with my laptop on my knees, my elbow on my pillow..).

To be honest, a difference of two inches is indeed possible, though not guaranteed, depending on when you measure it. Test it sometime yourself: first, in the morning, directly after you get out of bed. Then, in the evening, right before you go to bed again.
So if you want to pass a test with a minimum height requirement, go there lying on your back.

So what is with the 5'8" requirement thing? This is the third time I've encountered it as a bar to people doing modeling as a profession and I'm just kind of curious as to why the industry seems so obsessed by it.

well, people like to say that designers make clothes to fit 5'8 or taller models.. not many women are actually that tall, but hey, that's an old argument.
B, nothing wrong with being 5'6, but I'm not. :p
I'm supposed to be 5'8.
Healthcare here is free until you turn 20, for some reason. after that, you need to pay for prescriptions, dental care, specialists.. and a bunch of other things. and on top of that, the waitinglists for the decent ones are very long..

Perhaps it is that all fashion designers are smaller than 5'8"?
Based on pictures that I've seen of models and designers together, that does seem to be a valid explanation, though I must admit I'm not entirely sure why it would be relevant.

Ah, I see...Napoleonic complexes abound in the fashion industry...and in more ways than just attitude.

Classic "I'm not tall enough for modelling but I like fashion so I become a fashion designer"... or maybe not so classic :)

Gratz on signing!
I taught at a modeling "school," Im embarassed to admit.
Never could quite get the hang of the catwalk thing, though. Something about being 6'4" 290lbs with 2 left feet. Only thing I could do was snap into a Butterfinger with attitude at the end of the runway.
Yeah, and that whole 5'8" is just bizarre.
And yes, measuring in the morning can make a big difference.

it's the legs you wanna watch out for - if yo use your arms more than your legs when you're climbing, then you're doing somehting wrong. lol.
My legs are stronger than those of my 6'5, 300lb stepdad, and have been, since I was about 15 :D
i read this funny article once, about silicon implants they can put under your scalp.. apparently they can make you up to two inches taller - but yoy may end up looking like an egg head. I have to find that for you guys some time. but not at 3 am.

Anaiya Sedai
07-16-2008, 10:55 AM
well, a 5'8, 100lb model is going to have a different figure to a 5'8 150 lb model...
that's why they have different, "plus size" models with different clothes for that.. although, I must say, "plus size" is actually the US dress sizes 6-10/ UK 10-14.. so not that plus size at all.
Woohoo great news, congrats on the contract

6'2" 200 lbs (I lost 12 lbs on a diet over the past 3 months). :) I realized I was starting to pack on the weight so I've cut my diet back extensively since then.

My sister used to work for Lane Bryant. The models they hired were size 12-14 with a minimum height requirement of 5'9". The mannequins they sent to the stores were size 10.
Zaela Sedai
07-16-2008, 01:43 PM
~sigh @ Dav~
That was more of a sarcastic jab to the stupidity of modeling agencies/ clothing advertisers.
Lane Bryant is pretty decent about model size...but in all honesty is about the same as reg stores... size 12/14 women don't need to shop at plus size stores I wouldn't think. But then I don't know what size they start selling at. better then seeing a model my size advertizing for a plus size store....
I really like the new dove commercials...with all the normal sized women. I'd guess they are all between a 6 and a 10, nice to see that...
Theres a difference between being a 0/2 thin girl like our Ana, and being a 0/2 anorexic girl. A girl I work with is the same, very thin but very healthy... odd how that works...if I managed to get down to Ana's weight I'd look absolutely disgusting, and yet she looks great. I bet if she were my weight she'd be bordering on too heavy....yet we're the same height go figure...body types, who knew
ShadowbaneX
07-16-2008, 01:58 PM
It varies. For instance with my bones and muscles if I were to go below 190 I'd probably be underweight. Granted, I'm seriously overweight so that's not really a problem. ;)
My dad is the same way. When he was having some tests done a few years ago they said his ideal body weight is something like 196. He's a little taller then I am, but I think I'm denser still then he is, so it probably evens out.
The difference is probably the same, it's literally in your bones, Zae. Your's are probably more dense, thus heavier then Anaiya's. So if you were to weigh the same as her, you'd have to lose other weight, 'healthier' weight as it were, from other parts of you, like muscle mass, or whatever.
Looking it up on wiki the human skeleton accounts for about 20% of total weight of a human body. So if you've got a 100 lbs girl that's probably a 20 pound skeleton. If you've got a 200 lbs guy that's a 40 pound skeleton.

I seem to remember something about the diameter of one's wrists and ankles determining that.
ShadowbaneX
07-16-2008, 02:06 PM
I think that's a symptom, not a determining factor. Chances are if you've got a larger, denser skeleton, your wrists and ankles will be larger too.
For a comparison, the diameter of my wrist is 8" and my ankle is 11"
Gilshalos Sedai
07-16-2008, 02:13 PM
The diameter of mine are 2.5 and 4.5 respectively. Wow, you really have big bones, SBX. ;)

I have room to spare when I circle my thumb and middle finger around my wrist, about a 1/2", the reverse of yours, Zae (and my forefinger and thumb touch). I think Bryan's hand overlaps by about 3" on my wrist.
Ok, so I guess he can keep calling me "little."

Sei'taer
07-16-2008, 03:41 PM
my hands are 7 1/4" from wrist to end middle finger. I don't have any way of measuring around my wrist, but my fingers don't touch by a quite a bit a little more than half an inch.
Last year at this time I weighed in at 255lbs. I lost down to 195 and am now about 205. I'm good at this weight, but I'd like to lose a little fat and put on a little more muscle. We'll see how it goes when I get back into the swing of working out...

I never measured to see how high I could jump. Playing soccer for years I know I could jump pretty good, but now my bad knee would probably collapse under me if I tried to do anything like that. Plus, theres a lot of difference between a 6'2" 175lb kid and a 6'2" 205lb wore out, beat up, smoking, beer drinking, non running 38 yr old. About 6'3"-6'4". I'm pretty bigboned. Big feet and big hands, broad shoulders etc. I sometimes wish I could be like 1-2 inches shorter. Sometimes it's a nightmare to find clothes that fit nicely, sometimes have to settle for a bulky shirt so it will fit my armlength etc. I are a giant!

Refrigerator Perry had a 40" vertical, iirc.
It was believed that he had a huge vertical coming out of college, but I can't find any place that lists an official measurement for him. And his college weight was something just under 300. By the time he retired, he was ~380, a true fridge. :)
Spud Webb was 5'7" and had a 42" vertical, and he won a slam dunk contest with that. I'm slightly shorter and have a slightly smaller vertical. I can't dunk a basketball, but I think it's largely because I can't palm the ball. My lift comes from early years playing lots of soccer and later years playing lots of volleyball.

standing still and jumping straight up. How high can you jump. Usually I've seen it done while standing near a wall with some way to measure the jump...like a tape measure or ruler attached to the wall. Like I said, I don't remember ever doing it, but I know basketball players do it a lot.
Here ya go...some of the stuff used to check a vertical jump. (http://www.topendsports.com/testing/equipment-verticaljump.htm)

Basketball players do it a lot, but so do football players who play certain positions. Obviously the receivers, especially the tight ends who usually have to pull the ball down in a crowd, but my son worked on his jumps as well, and he played defensive back, usually free safety or rover.

No, but they can boast about it over the Internet.

I wouldn't call it boasting. I'm just saying that, were we to meet in person, I could have a face-to-face conversation with some of you taller people in 2 second intervals. :)
My particular ethnicity is even less known for jumping ability than white men.

bah...whats height got to do with anything?sure, lots of people, Sare included, are taller than me, but i don't call myself short because of thatso what if i DO need a stepladder to reach the topshelf?i own one and it's awesome to use for taking a swing at someone "tall" with too;)so... all you 6'2''+... bring it on;)

Ask your dad when he got his bulk. most likely you will. My dad was like me in HS. skinny and short. but he bulked up and filled out after high school the same as I did. I haven't seen my uncles on my dad's side to know for sure I'm fairly certain they did the same.

I dare you to say that to Dai Shan's face without smiling ;) LOL
but truthfully I've found out over the years that height really doesn't matter all that much. there are advantages and disadvantages for both. If you are comfortable with your height then that is all that matters. I'm happy with my 5'11". It's the 210 lbs. that I'm working on now ;)
and sorry Tam but I'm the one that made this into a weight discussion instead of a height discussion ;)

Hehe, my dad has been getting his bulk slowly but steadily over the last 20 years... but I think it has more to do with lifestyle, than with genetics. :)

07-18-2008, 02:49 PM
lol yeah mine too. but he started out bulking out in muscle and in his shoulders, arms and chest. slowly over the years it has migrated to his stomach, hips, and thighs ;)

I was able to witness my father fat up, as I call it. :D As soon as he turned 40, he started swelling no matter how much he ran.
So by that logic, I have 22 more years of being a beanpole. :D

5'11 - 6'0" (depends on when I get measured...I tend to be shorter in the afternoon, I thinks me  )
150 - 165 lbs (depends on what scale I use...I think it's closer to 165-170 now, though...haven't been weighed properly in 3 months, and I've started working out more)
7 1/2 in. wrist, 10 1/2 in. ankle
I eat a helluvalot, just gots me a superfast metabolism.
My grandpa is 72 and is built the same way, still has a fast metabolism, and works out more than I do  (course, working 45 hour weeks makes it hard to find time to work out while still wasting time online, and playing guitar, and video games, and having a girlfriend...all he has to worry about is his next painting/sculpture (he is an artist for a living...and he's done VERY well for himself, lol) )
And my dad is 5'8", 220 lbs. built like a linebacker, always has been. I inherited a lot more from my mom's side, lol.

Every male in my family (on both sides) is no taller than 5'9", except for one cousin. He's 6'3", 225 lbs, and built like a bull. He's also half-white. Unlike the rest of us in medicine\law\engineering\finance, he's a DEA agent.
At family gatherings, he's always the first pick for any sport. :)
Even soccer (grrrrrr...)

Ok...so I went to the gym and got my bodyfat, weight and all that measured...
6'0"
145 lbs
7% bodyfat
Need to gain at least 4 lbs. and get to 10% bodyfat.
size 14 shoe...they had to go get a larger scale to accommodate my shoe size...lolz.

We know for sure that while in the National Football League he could stand with both feet flat on the floor, bend at the knees into a squat and leap up on a standard level table of 30 inches. That's normal kitchen table height. So for a man of his weight he could jump really well!!!

For a 300+ lb person, that is an incredible feat, no argument there. For reasons like that the bears put the Fridge on the field goal blocking unit, and he did get a few blocks. But for the rest of us who are half is weight, 30" is not a lot to write home about. :)

Like you know what they say about Chinese? They're all immaculate soprano singers.
And Puerto Ricans? Why, they poop candy.

I've always found that being called a "good Christian" something of a horrible stereotype. I'm not Christian, nor have I ever been. At best (best) I'm agnostic and being called that for simply being a good person...well, lets just say I don't look on it too kindly.
