View Full Version : Web Comics / Manga / Paper Comics

08-01-2008, 01:19 AM
First off, sorry for the double-thread post, but when I get an idea for a thread they kinda come in pairs...

How many of us here read web comics? (or paper comics or manga, for that matter? I read neither of the latter, but I am addicted to web comics...)

Post here with a list of the ones you read, if you read any at all. Please specify whether it is a web comic, a paper comic, or a manga, it'd help me out.

Once others have posted, I'll post the list that I read...but I don't want a HUGE intro-thread starter post...scare the bejeezus out of the readers, lol.

False Edit: Also, you might want to include whether it is a NSFW comic or not...that might avoid potential awkwardness, lol.

Webcomic -- outstanding

Webcomic -- aka OoTS (Order of the Stick) -- seriously funny

Webcomic -- gorgeous space battles

Webcomic -- was funny for the first year - has turned considerably grimmer, of late. Still a must-read.

Newspaper comic -- interesting artwork -- funny characters -- GREAT cat.

Newspaper comic -- the art isn't so good -- but you GOTTA love the dumb crocodiles...

Webcomic -- Uhm... not really describable.

Others I've bookmarked I only visit occasionally. The above are every day or at least as often as they update.

Sorry before-hand for this post...it's pretty long, and I hope none of the forum code is broken. I did the coding all in MS Word, so it might break...just lemme know if you see everything alright.

I really wasn't expecting any posts so quickly, but I guess I might as well make my post.

Matoyak’s List of Web Comics

{Disclaimer from Mato: I use a 5-star/asteric rating system to describe how good I personally feel each individual web comic is based on my own feelings, 5 being the best, 1 being the worst. I will occasionally break the 5stars and give a 5/6 or a flat out 6 star rating. 5/6 is better than 5, and 6 is better than 5/6. So I guess I essentially use a 6-asteric rating system with a 5.5 thrown in for good measure…ah well, it’s easier to describe it in the other way. I also warn for mature content. This mature content can range from mild nudity to full blown (No pun intended) sex scenes. It could mean themes dealing with death, sex, mortality, homosexuality, transgender transformation, anthropomorphic transformation, bisexuality, dark humor, satire, gore, or anything that I feel requires an open mindset or thought process. Generally stuff considered PG-13 and up. (ESRB T-rating and up for the gamers out there) This said, I cannot be held liable for content located within the following links. Any ideas expressed within are solely those of the person doing the expressing. Also note that many web comic artists have characters say and do things that the web comic creators themselves do not support or advise. I do not write, draw, or own any part of the web comics listed here. Thank you for reading.}

NOTE: All Web Comic titles are the links to the first page of that comic. (AKA click on the Web Comic’s name)

Tru already mentioned:
the order of the stick (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0001.html)

I also read Heroes (http://www.nbc.com/Heroes/novels/)(yes, as in the series)

A lot of comics there, and none reads xkcd? (http://xkcd.com/)
A pretty minimilistic comic with stickfigures and sometimes just one square but very cool humour in it, a little computer/math nerdy at times, some which I dont fully get and some that are awesome, try it out :)

Another a little disturbing comic I read is Cyanide and Happiness. (http://www.explosm.net/comics/1359/)
There is no good word to explain it, it's just fucked up most of the times :)

Dinosoaur Comic (http://www.qwantz.com/) is another comic I usually read, but it's always the same drawings of a dinosaur and his friends in the same positions and the only thing that differs between the strips are the text, it's always a discussion he has with himself, his friends or God about some weird stuff he has been thinking of recently. The phrase "thinking outside the box" comes to mind when you read that comic :)

Then I usually read Penny Arcade too and a few others but which I don't find as good as those three I've mentioned.

Bob and George (www.bobandgeorge.com)

No more new comics but he did the comic for 7 or 8 years every day so plenty to read. Megaman sprite comic and I think he was actually the first. Frickin hilarious, especially if you never played the games (which I didn't).

CAD (www.ctrlaltdel-online.com)

Already mentioned up above but worth repeating.

8-Bit Theater (www.nuklearpower.com)

Again mentioned above. Hilarious parody of FF. I think he's still technically on the first game ;).

I read those three daily just in case there are updates.

I was thinking the same thing. I love xkcd, it's the only one I make certain to read when it's updated. Kinda hard to miss it, since it's my home page.

I was recently introduced to Order of the Stick, I like it. I'm trying to catch up from the first comic.

Tru is always trying to hook me on Girl Genius, but I just can't get into it. Sorry sis, love ya! :)

You know, I'm kind of surprised no one mentioned Dr McNinja...
http://drmcninja.com/index.html, a web-comic

or the Perry Bible Fellowship
(Potentially NSFW)http://pbfcomics.com/, a web-comic

Also, on the subject of web comics, check out this (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/108-Webcomics) hilarious (yet disparaging) rant about them and their creators.

Zero Punctuation is great :) I always tune in every wednesday or so when he does a new review of a game and usually rips it to shreds :D I'm not a gamer but I find his videos incredibly funny most of the times.

vgcats, least I could do, metatokyo, looking for group, the noob comic, dark legacy comic
