Everyone needs to communicate with other people. One popular way of communicating online is via Instant Messenger software, such as AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, Windows Live Messenger, and more. Some creative thinkers have developed clients that run across multiple platforms. Regardless, IM clients are here to stay.

Here are the results of the Theoryland Hive Five (IM Clients):

Digsby IM (http://www.digsby.com)
digsby is a multi-protocol IM client that lets you chat with all your friends on AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, Google Talk, and Jabber with one simple to manage buddy list. In addition, Digsby has a powerful email notification tool that alerts you of new email and lets you perform actions such as 'Delete' or 'Report Spam' with just one click. Digsby also provides a social networking tool that alerts you of events like new messages and gives you a live Newsfeed of what your friends are up to by tying into various networks such as Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, and more.

Miranda IM (http://www.miranda-im.org/)
Miranda IM is the smaller, faster, easier instant messenger with support for multiple protocols. Designed from the ground-up to be resource efficient while still providing a rich feature set, Miranda includes support for AIM, Jabber, ICQ, IRC, MSN, Yahoo, Gadu-Gadu and more. Additionally, with the choice of hundreds of plugins, icons, sounds and other content, Miranda IM gives you the ability to modify, customise and extend functionality to make it your own.

Windows Live Messenger (http://get.live.com/messenger/overview)
It’s the next-generation MSN Messenger. Along with everything you already love about Messenger—your contact list, emoticons, and instant access to your friends—there are brilliant new ways to connect and share photos (and other stuff). As always, it's free to download Messenger and use most of its features.

Google Talk (http://www.google.com/talk/)
Google Talk is a lightweight Jabber-based instant messaging client with voice capabilities. Google Talk is easy and intuitive to use. All you need to make free calls is an Internet connection, a microphone, and a speaker.

AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) (http://www.aim.com)
Pidgin (http://www.pidgin.im/)
Adium (http://www.adiumx.com/)
