View Full Version : Reasons why I prefer DS9

This is for you who have any interest in Star Trek and similar tv-shows. If you don't like it fine.
I know there are people who either go only ST or only SW. For me it's more like "why don't we all get along". I like them both, for different reasons.

Anyway.

I re-watched the ST-DS9 series recently. I must say that I prefer that series to all the other ST series. Now, why do I do that then you might ask.

It is not for the much bigger battles that we see in seasons 4-7 compared to the other shows. Primarily in space (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCm70favfYI)but also a few on planets and bases (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIZ3EuvTXFc).
It is not because of a specific character, although my two favourites are in DS-9 (Garak (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVV-8f1kOvE&feature=related) and Quark).

I like it the most because:
It is the series with most interesting recurring side characters.
It has the most and best story arcs. For example the whole dominion war, which covered a couple of seasons.
It explores the darker side of humanity. Where they are forced to make questionable choices (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPocxGUWMxM&feature=related).
It has interesting and colourful villains (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVHR0UPHERQ).
It has a lot of humor and warmth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U00vsmpUpqo).

Sure the effects were not as good as in todays shows, but that doesn't matter that much with stories and characters like these.

Sorry, a whole lot of links. You don't have to watch them all.

DS9 is so far above any of the other ST shows that its not even a comparison. It had by far the best writing, characters, plots, etc of any of them.

i just finished enterprise seeing how i was always working when it originally came on. i loved it. either ds-9 or voyager is going to be next. My friend always tells me i need to watch voyager especially for the dominion. hands down Q is the best character ever. I even own a book called I,Q. written from Q's perspective.

Jadzia is WAY hot.

i really liked Enterprise, but i couldn't get into Voyager. It had a good premise, but there were a few characters i cared about. 36 of D didn't even help.

TNG was the best, IMO. Jean-Luc Picard is the best captain. Ever. The series finale was really awesome.

DS9 did have a lot of good shows. I liked how Worf crossed over to that series once TNG was done. And the USS Defiant was pretty awesome. Kicked some butt. Maybe I would prefer DS9 over TNG if I had actually seen more than a few episodes.

Voyager was meh. I haven't seen Enterprise.

Glad to hear none of you had any lunch money in Middle School.

Some of us are big nerds who didn't mind a fight now and then.

I just finished watching the first season of DS9 and I like it, but I think I'll always be and original and TNG fan. Don't get me wrong, I like DS9 and maybe I'll like it more as I go thru the seasons but I don't think it will take the place of TNG.

I will always be a Star Wars nerd first.

Dunno about your school, but my whole town had a healthy dose of nerd-dom, because every week, on Saturday night, right after the 8:00 primetime stuff, the local channel would play double episodes of TNG.

In chronological order, which was apparently no small feat by the standards other channels had set down.

<3 that.

Stick with it.
When you get to season 4 things really take off. This is when the series defines what happens in the alpha quadrant after TNG.

You have the federation fighting
first the Klingon Empire
then the dominion
and finally the dominion and the Cardassians.

DS9 is where the Star Trek universe, as a series and a setting, grew a beard, so to speak.

I knew as of the first season that this was not just another TNG, because of the depth of the storytelling that was taking place.

The episode Duet was simply mind-blowing- and a bell-weather for the change in tone and form that DS9 was going to be. Perhaps my all time favorite Star Trek episode of any series.

In the Pale Moonlight is my favorite episode.

Sisko and Garek at their best...being as that they are the two best actors on the show, it really shined.

Strangepackage, you can find a clip from "Duet" in my first post in this thread under "colourful villains".

Dav, you can find a sequence from "In the pale moonlight" in my first post under "questionable choices"

In the Pale Moonlight was an awesome episode and I gotta agree with Seeker Erzi was adorable.

Also, the main difference between DS9 & TNG, the reason why the former was a lot better than the latter was Babylon 5. You want to talk about awesome actors dealing with amazing plots and difficult situations, then B5 is the place to be...just skip the 5th season.

I love the Ferengis Rules of Acquisition. (http://www.sjtrek.com/trek/rules/) It is used to conduct business and cheat your customers according to specific rules and not just by chance.

A few golden ones
16 A deal is a deal ... until a better one comes along.
17 A contract is a contract is a contract (but only between Ferengi).
34 Peace is good for business.
35 War is good for business.
111 Treat people in your debt like family ... exploit them.
211 Employees are rungs on the ladder of success. Don't hesitate to step on them.
223 Beware the man who doesn't make time for oo-mox. (stimulation of ear-lobes (erogenous zone))
239 Never be afraid to mislabel a product.
261 A wealthy man can afford anything except a conscience.

Not too bright though. If you doubt me just go watch Deep Core (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0202314/). Also features fellow Star Trek alum Wil Wheaton.

When reading through the ferengi rules of acquisition (http://www.sjtrek.com/trek/rules/) you can almost see that this is the bible for the new extreme capitalists. You know like the Wallstreet guys for example.

My parents were original Trekkies, and I watched TNG from the very first day it debuted (I was 11). I had SUCH a crush on Wesley Crusher that it wasn't even funny. LOVE me some Picard. TNG is and always will be my first ST love.

But, I like DS9 better. I didn't watch DS9 until after even Voyager was off the air, but man, massive marathons of the DVD sets, and we got through the entire series in about a month. Love it. So love it. I like it best when Worf comes over, but even seasons 1-3 are great. I do like Avery Brooks much better bald with a goatee, though. :p

Seasons 4-7 of DS9 are just fantastic television. DS9 was hit or miss in the first season but its first season was miles, no eons ahead of TNG's first season (which would have gotten any other show cancelled I think as some of those episodes were brutal).

Also, bald/goatee Sisko was simply the best ST Captain of all time.

Rule of thumb: if Sisko has hair, watch something else. That said, I'd still put season 2-4 of B5 up against any 3 seasons of Star Trek. I wonder how good DS9 would have been if B5 had never aired.

Yeah, how dare B5 steal their entire premise/show/1st Season from Star Trek like that.

~starts whistling innocently~

Seriously though, DS9 only succeeded because Berman ignored it in favor of Voyager...the worst show to ever air on television.

I like how non-PC and how absurdly anti-female the Ferengis are.

When they get married a male writes a contract with the females father.
When a female Ferengi gets pregnant then the male writes up a rental agreement.
Women are not allowed to wear clothes or earn a profit.
The females are expected to chew the food for the males.
And so on.

That was just the anti-female bit.

They are the galaxies extreme capitalists. (see their rules of acquisition that I brought up in an earlier post)
Workers are not allowed to strike.
Their contracts are very unfair. A conversation between Quark and his brother Rom:
R: I feel that somehow this whole thing is my fault.
Q: Of course it's your fault, everything that goes wrong here is your fault. It says so in your contract.

Yeah, Beavis and Butthead did more to run the franchise into the ground than anything else.

Written by Peter David the best Star Trek Author Hands down. If you want a treat read the New Frontier series.

If you dont like reading Star Trek try his Apropos of Nothing Series.
