Figbiscuit
02-03-2012, 02:32 PM
Something Random: I have a second job where I fix books by crap authors. I am less than a ghost writer - I am a ghost sub-editor/grammar checker/spell checker.

May I ask how you got your second job? That is something I would actually quite like to do. And did you need any qualifications to get it?

For myself:

Who: Fig (A Figbiscuit is my favourite type of biscuit. I believe you American's know it as a Fig Newton)
Joined TL: Not entirely sure. Around 2005/6, maybe? Signed up to this version of the board, went AWOL for a while, came back and lurked for a bit, then finally said hello again a few months ago.
Where: West Yorkshire, England.
Who've ya met?: No-one, although I have three of you on my FB. PM me if you wanna be friends there :)
Favorite WoT Book: Short answer is, don't have one. Long answer would take up far too much room.
Favorite Scene: So many, from Dumai's Wells all the way through to Nynaeve's block going (full spectrum range of emotion there!!)
Favorite Theory: TAIMANDRED! I will believe this till the end of time.
Something Random: I love my dog as if she were mine own child
Other Sites: Apart from FB and Twitter? I lurked a little on Westeros and Dragonmount, but never signed up to anything. My heart lies with TL ;)

ETA: Thanks to Callandor (really??) posting a link bigging up himself and his so awesome theory, I discovered that I joined in June 2006.

Callandor
02-03-2012, 02:47 PM
Who: Callandor

Joined TL: Around September 2002. I stayed on the main site for many months, wondering how many people posted there before I went to the message board and saw all the action was there.

Where: Wisconsin, USA.

Who've ya met?: No one in person. I've been sent a few Christmas cards, but that's it.

Who wants to meet you?: Probably no one.

Favorite WoT Book: Lord of Choas.

Favorite Scene: Too many. Falme, Dumai's Wells, the Rhuidean columns both times, Lan's back story, Rand getting Callandor, Mat's visits to Finnland, on and on and on.

Least favorite scene: That god damn circus in The Fires of Heaven.

Favorite Theory: My ultimate correct theory of which the entire perspective of the series rests, naturally.

Something Random: I just completed a medical study where I was given a whopping $12. But I might get paid to spend time in an fMRI later, so those are nice benefits.

Other Sites?: I don't visit other Wheel of Time sites. Death to Wotmania's thread view, if they still even have the thing.

Age group: How dare you, you impertinent reprobate!

Book you are reading now?: The Magic of Reality (http://www.amazon.com/Magic-Reality-Know-Whats-Really/dp/1439192812/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1328295843&sr=8-1) by Richard Dawkins and Dave McKean. It's wonderful.

Sports?: No, screw you for asking.

Are you going to watch the Super Bowl?: I kill vile questions like that, so no.

Ever been to a signing?: No, not a one.

Did you get to meet Robert Jordan?: No.

Met Brandon?: No.

Been on TV?: Yes! Weee! Though much more in the capacity of "Oh, there I am," versus actual subject matter.

Best part of 2011 for you: I got to attend the premier of a film I worked on for over 2 years.

Worst part of 2011 for you: I held my cat in my arms while she slowly died in front of me, hopefully peacefully if the vet was competent. Then I had to do it again for my other cat.

Been out of the country?: Went to France last December. Would go again if I had the money.

Where would you like to travel to?: Loads of places. Iceland, England, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Germany, Japan, CERN, too many more.

Where do you not want to travel to?: Australia. Too many of the world's top 10 most poisonous ______ live there.

Been right on a theory?: Only the best theory ever (http://theoryland.yuku.com/topic/2310).

Hey, you like movies?: Just a little bit.

Last movie you saw?: The Artist, last night. Lot of fun, but horrible audience experience. Modern audiences watching a silent film = "Oh my god, the dog is barking but there is no sound! Isn't that neat?!" Shut up! It's a damn movie, keep quiet unless you laugh!

What marks you as an old fogie of Theoryland?: I started posting here when the cleansing of the taint was the newest thing, so that only makes me moderately-old. I was also one of the youngest members then, and now am only moderately-young. Thank goodness I still have all my thick, lush hair and rippling abs.

Favorite dish you can cook: Orange juice chicken with rice and peas.

Food you eat way too much of: Pizza. Still working on moderating that.

Thing online that always makes you laugh: Cats (http://youtu.be/0Bmhjf0rKe8). Come on, you know that's the answer.

What you got planned for today?: I'm going to watch a movie after this. I was thinking of Lawrence of Arabia but I might not have time, so it will likely be Eraserhead.

What are your resolutions for the year?:

Read the bible in its entirety. Already know enough to know it's false, but I find it much more satisfying to be able to say "Yes, I have read ALL of it, and it's still crap."
Read The Origin of the Species.
Watch over 215 new movies. (Competition between me and a friend. He smoked me last year.)
Find a new job.
Learn at least 3 new words a day. Elucidate, lucubration, and recondite were today's.
Learn to cook 2 new meals a month.
Make more eye contact.
Go more than 172 days of the year without spending any money, of any amount, all day. (172 days was last year's achievement. Got to break that.)

Which of your resolutions are you most likely to break?: Right now, reading the bible. It's hard to care at this point, since I'd be reading almost to check it off the list with an attitude of "There, can I go now?"

Make up 3 new words: Ib, Tauno, and Wunch.

What thing are you working on that others will find more than "peculiar" and bordering on getting you committed? I can almost memorize a deck of playing cards put before me in any order.

Useless achievement that can go on your resume?: I can solve a Rubik's Cube. I have gotten a job through that skill.

Go on then, give us a fascinating distraction: You asked (http://youtu.be/vBPG_OBgTWg).

Be profound!: I can't, but he can (http://youtu.be/MMED5boxySs).

And that's all I got.

Who: Ivhon (unofficially, Ivh, Jennivhon, Gaidin Gone Gonzo, 3G, asshole, etc.)

Joined TL: Lurked from inception; confused as to actual join/first post date. I feel like it was after Muttley (so 2000 sometime) BUT my EQ addiction dragged me away for several years and I started playing EQ after Christmas 1999. Soooo....I kinda feel like I had to have joined officially sometime late in 1999. But then I smoked a lot of pot back then so its really quite hard to be sure of much of anything. Except Doritos. You can always be sure of Doritos.

Where: Austin, TX

Who've ya met: Gillywobbles, Bryan Blaire, Strange Package

Favorite WoT Book: Starting a reread for the first time in ages. Check back in a couple months

Favorite WoT Book: The Shadow Rising.
Favorite Scene: Too many to list, but let's say "the Golden Crane flies for Tarmon Gai'don." The Cleansing was also one of the more satisfying endings to a book.
Favorite Theory: That Gawyn will mistakenly use the Blood Rings as wedding rings and rid the world of two annoyances.
Something Random: Um... My screen name comes from the Vienna Teng album "The Waking Hour," mostly because I happened to be listening to it at the time I had to register somewhere. It's a good album.

Going to add a bunch at this Jordancon! Majorly bummed about some notable absentees, but should still be good :)
Favorite WoT Book: Don't think I have a particular favorite. Didn't care too much for 8 and 10 I guess.

Favorite Theory: Err... They've already finished the iPhone 6?
Something Random: Today I ate 9 slices of bread with 4 eggs (2 yolks), 2 slabs of fried bacon, some cheese and some sausage. Jocham had already mostly disappeared from TL when we met. I poked him about the upcoming meet and he said "why not?". He was raised to Elder in the same round as PD and Tru, but he I believe he was already gone by then.

seriously?

I do recall browsing the main site when I was in the military which was 2005. but I thought I didn't join the forums until 2006 O_oIf you'll note, your join date here says January 2006. At that time we were still testing vbulletin, and only Elders and above were allowed to see it. We never went live with it and never let the Younglings in because there were so many bugs, and it wasn't revived until...according to Sare's join date it was on my birthday (May 27) in 2008, which fits with my memories. We opened it up to everyone, and it crashed, and eventually we came back. But in January 2006 it was just Elders and above.

Other Sites? I started on DragonMount and came to TL when they shut down for several months – never went back :o This became home.

Favorite Theory - That Gawyn will mistakenly use the Blood Rings as wedding rings and rid the world of two annoyances. LMAO – love this

Dahl – the date at the top of your post is when you signed up at the vbulletin site – you were on EZ-boards, too, weren’t you? Your profile on the YUKU site says you joined in May of 2005 – so a few months earlier than me.

Incidentally, I find it amusing that Sinistrum is the FIRST name on the YUKU membership list when sorted by join date. Seven days BEFORE Tam joined, apparently.

But in January 2006 it was just Elders and above. Yeah, except some nice person who (whom? I hate that bit of grammar) I refuse to name gave me the link and password early. I created an account and looked at the site but didn’t dare post anything and someone harrumphed at me for not belonging there yet.

May I ask how you got your second job? That is something I would actually quite like to do. And did you need any qualifications to get it?

Sorry Fig! I just saw this.

It's a bit of a long story - but it isn't something that you need any qualifications for - it isn't really a job per say. I usually get handed possibly two books over the course of 18 months to two years, or so. One off payments for each.

I got the gig just through my own writing in the local sector, some published bits here and there in Short Story/ Poetry (I now hate poetry...) compilations. Like those ‘Coffee House’ table top monsters. (I don't even own a copy of them :o)

One day one of the editors of such a tome approached me with an offer of a quick job to tidy up the flow in an autobiography of sorts. This person had written their life story down, and when the editor approached them for rewrites, she looked at him as if to say 'isn't that your job!’

Too proud for a ghost writer - too lazy to actually follow through with the writing process.

In essence, that is what the job entails, fixing up the work of lazy celebrities, or adding a bit of polish to 'the next Harry Potter' where the author has a brilliant idea, the editor loves it and wants it out there ASAP, but the author has the writing capabilities of the aforementioned celebs.

In short, you don’t want to do it – you want to be a ghost writer. I’m only here as I fell onto the literary ladder by accident and I don’t want to let go for fear of losing contacts.

I ghost-wrote a novel, an international thriller that shall remain nameless. Well, not a bad book, but it is generally believed that somebody else wrote it, so we'll let it go at that.

This is not exactly well-known information, so I thought I'd drop it here:

Well, it is nice to know that I am (in a way) mimicing the footsteps of my idol. :D

Although, international thriller does trump: 'ex-glamour model kiss-and-tell exposé'. :(

Sorry, I did think after that this wasn't really the most appropriate place to ask this, I should have just PM'd you.

Having just read the wiki-page on Ghost Writing, maybe you could be right. I just have this thought that plays around in the back of my mind, that I'd quite like to do that kind of work on a free lance basis. That and also maybe free-lance copy typing for people, if that's even a job...

Thanks for your response anyway, you've certainly given me something to think about :)

Favorite WoT Book: It shuffles between 4,5,6.

Favorite Scene: As of now, Lanfear in the Epilogue in ToM.

Favorite Theory: Lanfear will play a key role in the Sealing of the Bore.

Something Random: In 2011, I taught my son to play Stratego, Risk, and Magic the Gathering. I introduced him to classic television; he has watched all 100+ episodes of MacGyver, Gilligan's Island, 70's The Incredible Hulk, and the A-Team.

Other Sites? Building too many of my own these days to visit any others.

Any Last Requests? I'd love to see as many of you as I can at JordanCon. I don't know that I'll be able to afford this trip every year but I will try to make it at least once more in 2013. If you can make it in April, or are considering it, I mentioned I'd have "free" t-shirts right?

Any Final Notes About Your Last Request? If you are interested in helping fellow Theorylanders make it out to JordanCon, and there are enough of us interested in financially helping out, it might be worthwhile to put together a PayPal account where we can collect donations and then run some kind of Theoryland "Pool" for those that would like to attend but cannot afford it. Obviously, we'd have to have some kind of cap re:how much we'd offer per "winner", but just a thought. Write me an email at tamyrlinATtheoryland.com if you can attend, but can't afford it. Nothing may happen, but something might. Also, if you are interested in contributing, for example if you thought to make a donation to Theoryland this could be the way, also email me at tamyrlinATtheoryland.com.

Nothing could ever break Picard. He was a legend. I know that much, at least.

On an unrelated note, Patrick Stewart was doing the honours at my friends graduation from Uni. Altho not dressed as Picard. That would have been cool.

Who: Heinz
Joined TL: Had been lurking for a number of years. Don't think I actually joined until 2008 or so.
Where: Madison, WI
Who've ya met?: No one. I mostly lurk, don't really know anyone, only occasionally annoy people.
Favorite WoT Book: Knife of Dreams
Favorite Scene: Mat and his campaign after rejoining the Band, culminating in 'Prince of Ravens' chapter.
Favorite Theory: Read too many, I can't think of what is my 'favorite'. Luca is the DR was hilarious though.
Something Random: I love to grill. A lot. I shovel snow off my deck to clear a path to my grill, so I can use it year-round.
Other Sites? For WoT? None. I occasionally click and glance at some of the other sites, but this is my only regular WoT site. I'm a Star Wars fan at heart though, and spend most of my fantasy-time with that in one way or another (reading, gaming, writing short story/solo-RP).

Can't wait for the final book, BTW. Will be a bittersweet moment when I close the back cover after reading the last page.

I haven't been able to bring myself to do a complete re-read, hard as I've tried. I've just read the first half-dozen too many times. And the next three or four, while they have some important info, are my least favorites. From KoD on, though, I think it's time....

I read that as "Kardashian" and wondered what sort of horrors that torture technique involved. Having to watch their TV show? Surely that would have broken Picard.

Thank you! And to you, too, Dahl

It does say "Coexist." In order, it's the Death Star, the Enterprise, Babylon 5 Starfury, the Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver (I think -- not that big a Dr. Who fan), a Stargate, Farscape's "S", and Serenity. Found it on Hopper's FB page who'd reposted from someone named "Steampunk Boba Fett." So, I stole it, but tried to give credit.

Amazon.co.uk sometimes also have great bargains but the postage charge is a little higher.

Amazon UK used to charge a lot for shipping, but they recently started offering free shipping on orders of £25 and more. So it's a good option if you're placing a bigger order. And Book Depository (http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/) always offers free shipping and is usually cheaper than Swedish bookstores. The Eye of the World (http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/Eye-World-Robert-Jordan/9780812511819) is priced at €5.61 (50 SEK).

They're both "evil" in that they both are quasi enemies of the Federation. The Federation/Cardassian war occurred for about 20 years right before the start of TNG and is referred to a couple times. They were also the main antagonists for most of DS9's run. The Romulans are more sinister/devious than the Cardassians and have engaged in a Cold War with the Federation for about 100 years. They did, however, ally with the Federatoin during the Dominion War after Captain Sisko tricked them into thinking that the Dominion killed a Romulan Senator.

Also, the Vulcans and Romulans are cousins...actually the same race but the Romulans left Vulcan eons before due to societal differences involving the repression/control of emotion. This relationship is first explored in a TOS episode where Kirk becomes the first human to see a Romulan's appearance and this appearance leads to suspicion by some of the crew of the Enterprise against Spock.

Not a huge trekkie by any means.

Cardassians are more Nazi inspired.

Ironically, I would argue that they are a combination of the Late Roman Empire (where the military commanders held all the power...much like Cardassia where the individual Legates and Guls run things) and Nazi Germany (the work camp/slave labor aspect of their society).

You've the bumps in the wrong place, dear.

He keeps forgetting you're a girl. Which I expect is embarrassing for the both of you. I on the other hand need to be told only once.
I think I only forgot once (its the 'lupus' that thows me: I associate cats with girls and dogs with boys). Nicknames are what they are though. Lupus's lack of dangly parts doesn't stop my brain from reading Lupus as Boy Genius.
Maybe "Gender" would have been a good thing to have on the list that ..... eh everyone already have filled in.
Not this again...

The "Lupus" in question was male. You, of all people (given the reasons behind your repping!), should recognise the quote.

no one does a better job of making me want to agree with you than him.

Do what I do and don't agree with either of them.

Let's see...

I'm Red, Hillbilly, LukeDuke, Hillbilly Rabbit, Rabbit, Inspector Garfield, General of the Southern Border, Landogardner, Bringer of Pain, Asshole, Hero and probably some I can't remember.

I've been part of a reading, a naming (They don't just give those away, you know), and an animal naming (They don't give those away either).

I refuse to be demoted so far below my rank. I'm a General, Dammit. Captains salute me and I tell them to Fuck Off!

Not this again...

My Twitter name is my actual name. It's pronounced to rhyme with "lady".

Lupus' full name means "God is a wolf". Although I like "God is a disease" better. My Mum told me there was an episode of House where it actually was Lupus. She lied.

I am aware of animal names and the Book of Ivhon, but I have never participated in a reading of the latter. As to animal names, I think it was at one point mutually agreed that my animal name actually was my (old) username.

My nickname for him is 'troll'.

Funny, that's my nickname for one or two people round here...

Exactly. We already had that discussion a few years ago and the consensus was SBX's avatar.
