I don't know if I've seen a music thread on the Non board in all my time here, which surprises me. I absolutely love music; I have some sort of music on probably 80% of the time I'm awake. If there's one thing I enjoy it's being exposed to new music. I have fairly broad tastes, so don't be afraid to suggest stuff that's off the beaten path. I'm not opposed to pop music either, so let's just let it fly.

So, TL, what are you listening to these days? I'll go first.

I'm really into electronica/trance/D&B, and lately I've been getting into more atmospheric and ambient stuff. A really awesome song that I enjoy a ton is Strobe by Deadmau5 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKi9Z-f6qX4). So awesome.

I'm also into indie hip hop, so I have a few songs I'd like to recommend.

I'm a huge fan of Astronautalis, so check out This is our science (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUcERmZhSTc)

A Minneapolis local hip hop collective called Doomtree is really awesome. Dessa is one of the artists in the collective, and her career is starting to blow up. Feel free to start with Bangarang by Doomtree (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vtsar_VBCmk), and then poke around Youtube for stuff by Dessa and Doomtree if it sounds good to you.

I have plenty more, but I'm curious what you guys are listening to. Let's hear it! Share share share!

I've gone back to my youth the last few days.

listening to some old-school "happy"-punk(that's a direct translation of what we call it in Norway)

Other genres: I love (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78Sqsqq-BCU) the (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xw7cGKD0EfM) Trews (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrkgV5bl7kQ)

Also, Anchoress (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tL1d-dt9cU)(NSFW lyrics) is good if you like punk; this is a shameless plug since I know them. Bonus points: the lead singer is a WOT fan. not HCFF, but enough that he made WOT references while drunk.
(note: while I was at that party, I arrived 2 minutes after they stopped shooting.)

Also (www.youtube.com/watch?v=tf6VxRENc1o) Metric (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqldwoDXHKg) (indie rock) is good.

A music thread! *does a little dance*

I have a VERY varied taste in music, everything from hard dance to heavy metal, plus some hip hop and even the odd pop song, although only if it's really good (so really only the odd song!)

My most favourite band from last year had to be Pride and Glory - a side project by Zakk Wylde of Black Label Society, and surprising for me, cos BLS mostly leave me cold.

Other than that I also really got into Black Stone Cherry (bit late to that party), and Rival Sons, both of whom I'm going to see in March

I approve the Deadmau5 shout.

I may post some links, if I can a) figure out how, and b) choose some songs that I think are worthy.

ETA: I forgot about these guys. About as far removed from my normal listening pleasure as you can get, but I LOVE THEM! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYpDJw7fThU

My musical preferences seem to have shifted along with my age. (No matter how much I protested that 'Punk would always be cool to me!')

I still will harken back to the ol' Minor Threat and Black Flag stuff on the odd occassion.

But now I mostly listen things in the vein of a trip-hop style o(r it's variants): i.e. Portishead, Massive Attack, The Bird and The Bee etc

My tattoo's tell a different story although. There is a Deftones 'White Pony' on my ankle and a line from "Summer Holidays Vs. Punk Routine" by Refused (who recently got back together :D:D) wrapped around my forearm.

Edit: I just read that At The Drive-In are back together also... this proves to be a happy year for me.

I like Billy Joel.

There, I said it.
Step one of the ten step program is admitting the problem.Saw him live with Elton John in New Orleans, and it was quite fantastic, especially Billy, who really knows how to put on a show. Funny thing is (and now I get the suspicion I might have told you this story before) that I was in Ireland first I heard of that tour, which was at the time a strictly European tour, and I was sad. Then I came home, and a couple of years later a friend of mine saw an ad for the concert in New Orleans, and we got tickets immediately. Billy, Elton, and Tori are the Holy Trinity of pop pianists.

My Dad - who is the least hippy person you're ever likely to meet - listened to Kate Bush when I was a kid. However, thinking about it, it might be because she never really crossed the Atlantic. She's pretty well-known over here.

not huge on Cradle of Filth.

They're hit or miss with me. I've found that my like of their songs is inversely proportional to the amount Dani Filth screams like a cat being raped by a 2x4. So stuff like what I posted, Nymphetamine, Her Ghost in the Fog, and Darkness Incarnate are good, where as songs like Honey and Sulfer just get annoying.

The only time I purposefully listen to music is when I'm working out and then it's fast-paced golden oldies "Conga", "One way or another (I'm gonna get ya)", "99 luftballons", "Woolly-bully", "Let's twist again", "Don't stop me now", "Highway to Hell" etc

other than that... We own a live-show DVD by Beyonce and also one by Adele, those I sometimes watch. And of course whatever music Dai has to check: last night it was (novelty?) children's songs.

Even though I'm only 22, I'm almost completely out of touch with modern bands, Indie or mainstream. What I listen to is about 85%-95% classic rock (50s through the 80s), and have a particular fondness for bands like AC/DC (both lead singers, also saw them live in Denver), Motley Crue, Journey, Lynyrd Skynyrd (saw them live in Laramie, WY), Beach Boys, Little Richard, and so on. Mainly bands that have a lot of influence from jazz, old R&B, and other precursors that rock n roll originated from.

Some of my favorites are:
AC/DC-Hells Bells
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cx9FRbeVcr0

AC/DC-Jailbreak

I also like AC/DC especially the songs with a wink and a mischievous twinkle in the eye such as
Whole lotta Rosie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bH2LYBTivgk) and Dirty deeds (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BjrReZT2Kc)

Other favourites are some of the Boss's songs
When Reagan used Springsteens name in his re-election campaign Bruce answered by playing this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9VZFyLQzok&feature=related), which goes completely against Reagans policies.
His live performances are always better than the recordings and I prefer them.
I think the harmonica is used too little, it's great in this version of The Promised Land (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAwpILksMf4&feature=related).

Also, someone made a video out of his song Freaks and Geeks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNxUxglUc5I) from the series Community. Awesome.

:D

I went to a concert on In Flames Come Clarity Tour. Good shit. I havn't really listened in on anything new by them except a few singles.

I am mostly a fan of their Come Clarity and Soundtrack to Your Escape albums, but an older gem is the song Cloud Connected (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAXtDPKkOlA). Full of win!

And now some country! Another great swedish export called First Aid Kit with the song Lion's roar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gekHV9DIjHc). Enjoy.

An artist that blew up the hipster community is Lana Del Rey, when they found out she isn't really hipster :D Her music is tailored to that crowd though. It's really good stuff. A slow, deep sound that you just love. Check out Born to die (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bag1gUxuU0g&ob=av2e), or Video Games (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cE6wxDqdOV0), among others.

Anyone seen the movie Drive? Probably one of the best movies this year, much thanks to it's awesome soundtrack. Not sure if you are aware of this website, but go to www.grooveshark.com and you can make your own playlists and then share them with your friends (aka, TL posters) for free. The selection of music on the website is pretty remarkable too.

I'm considering creating a TL-submitted playlist so that every song named in this thread would be put on the list.

Most of my stuff is soundtrack works - lots of Murray Gold, some Ben Foster, David Arnold, Portman, Tiersen, Badelt, Zimmer, Elfman, a dash of Williams (a very small dash; he tends to get a little OTT), Desplat, Hooper, admittedly some Horner (ok, ok, the only reason I bought the DVD was it was on special and I wanted to study the CG as they use the same program as me!), Howard Shore... I've also the Robert Berry soundtrack.
Other than soundtrack I have Massive Attack, a fair bit of Telemann, some Queen (only the TGH1-3 though), lots of Lehrer, a great deal of Proms music, er, some Scissor Sisters :o, Vince Jones & Grace Knight, Orff, Eartha Kitt...
Most played is Murray Gold, I confess. The top 3 most played songs on this computer are all his - All the Strange, Strange Creatures, This is Gallifrey, and The Master Vainglorious.
Currently playing is "The Masochism Tango" by Tom Lehrer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpFsRSMq09w&feature=fvst, who outclassed Weird Al in such a fashion as to have Weird Al removed when last I needed space.

I'd forgotten him. No, he's not in my library, but he's on the list of "when I have money, think about".

I'm a huge fan of Queens of the Stone Age. Probably one of my top 3 favorite bands of the past 10 years, and easily one of the best concerts I've seen in that same time period. This is one of my favorite versions of one of my favorite songs of theirs.

Hanging Tree live in studio (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ld_u-KVVnFQ)

Mark Lanegan has an incredible singing voice. I just love it.

I listen to a lot of stuff, but most of it professionally (because I have to play it or something). For enjoyment, currently on repeat in my car is "As I Am" by Alicia Keys.
Other things coming by regularly are Adèle's "Live in London" album, Ray LaMontagne's "Trouble", Anthony Hamilton's "Ain't Nobody Worryin'", some Amos Lee albums, some Michael Jackson, N.E.R.D.'s "Seeing Sounds", some Beyoncé...

I've been on a Led Zeppelin kick the last few days. I'm not sure why. I rediscovered the genius of some of their more obscure work, and it's been a lot of fun to listen to some albums I don't get a chance (well, make a chance) to listen to very often.

Something I've also been trying to explain to friends recently is my overall dislike (yes, dislike) for 90+% of early 90's grunge. I like Nirvana, but most other grunge isn't something I can really get into. I don't really know why, to be honest. I've tried....believe me, I've tried. It just isn't something I can really appreciate.

THey're kind of hit or miss on the later stuff, though. When Bob gets the really high registers on Physical Graffiti and esp. Houses of the Holy...not my thing.

Funny. The more I listen to Nirvana, the more I don't like the music. Most of it is just annoying to me. Give me Pearl Jam or Soundgarden any day, but I can only take Nirvana in small, well spaced doses. I think it's because they were so overplayed when I was a teenager.

I started listening to some lesser known grunge, like Screaming Trees and Mudhoney recently. It's much heavier and...sloggy. Takes a certain mood.

After Etta James died, we put the Etta James station on our Pandora at home. That kicks ass. I need to get me some more Otis Redding, because I can't believe I didn't listen to much of his stuff before.

Nerd!

PS - That's close to how I imagined it, but really I heard it in my head as a traditional American marching song. The kind you sing in tandem.

LOL...trust me I'm pretty picky with music. Used to work for Virgin and fan "interpretations" are not evvveeerrr high on my list.

Thought that was pretty good although I agree with you on the marching bit.

During the school week I mainly listen to classical/big band/jazz/ orchestra and lately I have begun to incorporate more contemporary epic music. If any of you have heard of "Two Steps From Hell" then you know what I am talking about. They make epic music for the movies as well as video games.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqNRIM2pdaQ
