The unsung hero again was Jason Lezak who swam the final leg at an incredible pace. Phelps swam the 3rd leg and didn't have the lead starting off...the Americans were ahead after his lap, but Lezak buried it with a crushing final lap..

"Without the help of my teammates this isn't possible," said Phelps.

And I'm so glad he said that.

This is going to be so good for American swimming. Mark Spitz inspired enough interest to build a generation of fantastic US swimmers. Im hoping Phelps will do the same.

At first I was crushed for Dara Torres getting touched out in the 50, but after just a little time Im really happy for her. She was not predicted to win going into the Games and she came out with her best individual performance and an American Record. Good for her!

I thought this was going to be about Westboro. Needless to say, I'm relieved....

The swimming was fantastic...and to know there was no cheating, with all these athletes volunteering for labs to figure out even better ways to drug test made it even better. You know its genuine.

Despite the fact that I'm boycotting, I managed to see the event at the bar on Saturday, and man was I ever glad. That was easily one of the most exciting ecents I've seen in swimming. The women's was almost better for me...the power and athleticism of these folks was really amazing.

I have to say though that I still managed to somehow notice that someone was dragging their fingers during the butterfly, or that another was swimming with fingers open during the freestyle....

It is just amazing what Phelps did. Nobody has ever done that before, and him being as gracious as he was... just awesome. :D

Ishara, why are you boycotting?

They say he can't be beat, unless they add more events, because I think he competed in every men's swimming event.

He did all the short distance events and swam 4 different strokes...pretty impressive overall.. Even Spitz only did 2 strokes...not 4.

Mostly political reasons that I explained in the other thread somewhere. I'm really upset that the games are happening in Beijing.

Nope, he competed in less than half of the men's swimming events -- he doesn't compete at distances over 200M so there's 400, 800, and 1500 meter race galore for some future super swimmer to add to Phelps' grueling schedule.
