Should I read this for any reason other than that it's by GGK?

It is a good trilogy of fantasy writing that many of us like. I found it interesting for his use of lots of different folkloric tales that were tie ins. Sort of an explanation of the place all of our "stories" actually exist and bits have leaked out to our world.

That should be enough reason to read any of his books...

Agree with Dav, 100%.

But, still yes. It's unique, in that it's High Fantasy using contemporary (well, they were at the time of publishing) characters to juxtapose the stark differences between a world or magic and our own. It's beautifully written - seriously, but it's also very powerful. This, more than any other of his books (for me, at least) shows the price of power, the price of being special, or having gifts that others do not. And the fact that everyone has a backstory and a tragedy that is all their own. There is no better story, in my opinion.

I wish I could read it again for the first time.
