So my #1 girl, the love of my life, my fiancee gave me the coolest birthday present ever yesterday. She got me an hour long flight in an unpowered glider over the Green Mountains in Vermont. Part of the flight was lessons on actually flying the bloody thing. It was simply put one of the coolest things I've ever gotten to do. I'm sure Sarevok is laughing as he's a pilot but even just being at the controls of a simple glider was SWEET!!!. Basically they towed us up to around 6-7K feet in altitude over Mount Mansfield, VT (4300 ft) and then the pilot cut the tow cable and we were off. The glider is a small 2 seater trainer model with 2 sticks, 2 rudder pedals, etc and a wing design that makes it look like an old U-2 spyplane (tons of lift, light weight etc). We were up there for 45 min of unpowered flight trading altitude for speed and he even had us do a couple of short dives to get negative G's and the resulting positive G's upon pulling up. About 30 min in to the unpowered flight he let me take the stick (mind you we had been going over everything the whole time and there was a big preflight training thing) and it was awesome.

So yeah, that was my day yesterday...flying, even a little unpowered glider, kicks ass!

Here is a photo of a similar glider from them but not the actual one I was in:

I think there's something wrong with all gliders...
From the PoV of a regular pilot, it's at least one engine short :|

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Dav! Your day sounds like it was fabulous.

There's a glider field on the North Shore of my island -- my brother and sister have taken glider flights up there a couple of times. The photos they took were great. They both just loved it and were stoked to be able to go again when they last visited.

Sare -- your comment was hilarious. :)

old!?!?! your not even in the prime of your manhood yet. Or so Neil Patrick Harris would have us believe. Unlike women, who passed their prime long, long ago.

The space shuttle is also a glider. According to one of the pilots that flew it, it has the aerodynamic properties of a brick. So, since space shuttles tend to be too expensive, perhaps next year your girl will let you try to land a brick from a height of 20,000 feet.

There is of course an alternative to getting old. It does have a drawback, though.
