So, this is a thing.

Seems the Royal Canadian Mint has got a little trekkie. $200 gold coin in the shape of the Starfleet logo. Retail price of nearly $1300 CDN, but good luck getting it for that because they're already sold out.

There are a variety of silver coins, some in colour, some not, on the mint's website (http://www.mint.ca/store/search/searchResults.jsp?_dyncharset=UTF-8&i_search=star%20trek&_D:i_search=%20&sort=relevance&_D:sort=%20&go=true&_D:go=%20&_DARGS=/store/common/header_flash.jsp.formSearch&avad=113005_bb7f1f1f&al_affid=94209).

You know, I realise there a limited quantity, but I would not be able to justify spending $1300 for a $200 gold coin. Even if it's in the shape of the Trek logo.

Yeah but $1300 CAD is like $14 USD if I've done the conversion right.

Mind you, I was a liberal arts major, not a maths guy.

This episode of Rick & Morty (best show ever) comes to mind...

Jerry is showing the "special" Rick from another dimension his prized R2D2 coin collection.

Like I said, you don't have to worry about it as all 1500 have sold out. That said you could probably pay more to buy one from a collector if you absolutely had to have one.

Then again, the price depends at least in part on fashion. And when that changes, your investment could be gone down the drain in a jiffy. Are you really willing to bet that kind of money that Canada won't go out of fashion?

Star Trek fans are never in fashion.
