Default Maisia

Does anyone know why it was that Graendal was so pissed that Sammael decided to name her "Maisia" in aCoS (Ch. 20), during the meeting with Sevanna and the Shaido Wise Ones? It's obviously not her real name, so that can't have anything to do with it. Are we to just assume that it was some "descriptive" joke in the Old Tongue? That at least would seem to fit with his nar'baha joke later. Should I just guess that it is Old Tongue for "skank"?

Lol, Kimon, can you imagine if it really meant skank. That'd be hilarious, although I don't think Graendal minds being called that. After all, that is how she is and takes pleasure and a weird sort of pride in it.

aCoS came out before the White guidebook, and until that guide came out, I thought that Maisia must have been her real name. The whole scene between her and Sammael, with her literally threatening to kill him if he called her that again, just seemed so reminiscent of how Lanfear responded to anyone (specifically to Asmodean) but Rand calling her Mierin. Then we find that her name was Kamarile Maradim Nindar, which has always left me wondering what was the deal with that Maisia scene. It meaning something along the lines of "skank" is the only other credible explanation that I can come up with.

I was just hoping that someone who had been around in the Yuku days actually had an answer.

I thought it meant something like "whore" or "skank" as well. I don't see how Graendal wouldn't mind being called that. I don't know if Graendal indulges herself in her worshiping "entertainers," but I think she might even be more touchy about it if she does.

It has been a while since I did a complete reread so I'm not sure if this was mentioned in the books, but if I recall correctly "maisia" was a name commonly given to pets in the age of legends. In certain ways much more insulting than "skank", or even "skunk".

No one knows. You can pretty much insert whatever insult makes you happy.

The first half "Mai" translates to Maiden and you can go from there what kind of maiden "sia" denotes heh

That was my observation as a noob. I've since learned that Old Tongue stems don't always work that way I want them to, though.

I happened to notice a few mentions of this at Yuku. I knew it wasn't in any of the reports I had, so I searched ra.sf.w-rj for it. Yay, a new source! We have a hard time finding missing reports sometimes because there are only so many search words that work. This one didn't come up for 'signing' or 'tour report' or any of the others we used.

Agh, and I can't find the original report! Just a response to it that quotes some bits.
