This. I certainly used to do things like run off down the street and forget to tell my folks. And I used to get in trouble for it. And sometimes bad stuff happened when I was out with my mates, but I seem to have survived it all so far. I certainly learned a lot...

We seem to be developing (or have already developed) this culture whereby we won't let kids be kids, yet we also allow kids to dictate societies rules. I find it sad. Also, I don't have children, so I appreciate I have a slightly fanciful ideal in my mind of how I'd like their childhood to be.

Figures, of course. Adults tend to forget what they were like as kids. But if kids are in charge themselves, they'll make rules intended to prevent them from doing precisely the kind of stupid things kids tend to do. So they only have themselves to blame: if they hadn't grabbed power, they would still have their freedom.
