In other words, Sukoto is arguing that she's not Black because we've had a POV from her before, and she didn't expose herself as a Darkfriend. He says Verin doesn't count because she wasn't a Darkfriend at heart, but either way the logic doesn't work. RJ likes mysteries.
I guess the "beatings" are a reference to POD-16 "Unexpected Absences." For me, it was what exposed Sheriam as a DF. She entered her tent without sensing anyone holding the Power. And she found herself suddenly shielded. I understood that as Halima shielding her with Saidin. It didn't cross my mind that the "shielder" might be a female that was masking her ability. Was "masking" known among Salidar at that point?

We know it was Aran'gar. That doesn't mean that Aran'gar couldn't have been blackmailing her for something that had nothing to do with the Black Ajah. And yes, masking was known, but Moghedien never considered that, so why should we? (Inconsistency on RJ's part.)

Then again, why would an AS decide to let herself be blackmailed by a male channeler?

At best, he'll go mad at an unpredictable moment, and, if she survives that, he'll be exposed and an investigation will be started, which may very well reveal whatever he was blackmailing her with.

At worst, when he goes mad, he'll still her and do a lot of damage to the rest of the Salidar AS too.

Somewhere in between, she could be found to have been harboring and protecting a male channeler, which is probably not allowed according to Tower Law.

So if she knew that Halima used saidin (which seems a good bet, if she was shielded and noticed it wasn't saidar), then if she hadn't been Black she would have raised an alarm at the earliest opportunity. Which, admittedly, means nothing, since for an AS "earliest opportunity" may mean "when it is politically useful".

Sheriam didn't make that deduction. Moghedien did. Sheriam was just confused and scared.

Which, I have to say, made her a perfectly ordinary normal AS. BA members, on the other hand, were usually hopping mad because some stupid and untrained child spoiled their plot.
